    The 20” AR is an awsome platform. It gives the 5.56 its full potential. I see the whole SBR and Pistol AR as just a Fad.

    It's entirely your choice but it's a good idea to have one 20" government profile rifle in your favorite caliber. I have a USMC M16A4 HBAR Clone in 5.56 with the matching issue OKC-S3 bayonet, issue sling and cleaning kit. I love my M16A4 Commando in 11.5" but having one 20" is a lot of fun.

    Im old school in general. I'm the guy who refuses to stop using Alice gear, still wearing and prefer m81 woodland, I finally bought the rock river 20" , added a standard green usgi 2 point sling, and a burris RT-6 scope. I prefer the 20" and do think they're coming back, as all things eventually do. I think maybe this trend of shorter and shorter barrels is finally coming to an end? I'm not that old, and when the older guys, and vets see the 20" they all want to shoot it. Personally I think it's still a very viable choice. Still very effective, and does exactly what it's meant to do. 20" is certainly my GTW rifle.

    I own carbines but I love the old 20-incher. I have a pre-A1 (like a Colt SP-1) and an A2. Between the longer barrel and a little more weight, they shoot more smoothly and accurately than the carbines, for me at least.
    I see the benefit of the M4 for troops in and out of vehicles, or clearing buildings, etc. But I really can't understand all the new "AR pistols." Wouldn't it be better to have a .45 pistol or a .357 Magnum?
    Peace.

    Carried the M249 , M16. and M4 throughtout different deployments. I'd take the M249 if I didn't have to carry it, but I'd take the M16, or an AR15, with a 20 inch barrel over the M4. It's a personal choice, but the 20 inch outperformed the 14.5 M4 in my experience during deployments. I have a larger frame than most, which might be a factor, but I had a noticable drop in ease-of-use, especially at longer ranges. I asked for the longer barreled rifle, and honestly think the standard rifle never should have dropped below 20 inches. Some troops need shorter rifles, most don't.

    The 20inch gets the most out of 5.56 and the only reason to go shorter is clearing a building because they point faster, or shooting with a suppressor.
    Outside you will shoot better with the longer 20 inch barrel. I do not own a short barrel !

    I had a PSA 18” then swapped to a 24” bull barrel. Although most people aren’t trying to shoot beyond 1,000 yards with their AR. My buddy built a 10” pistol. Kinda fun but I would rather get an FN five seven for awesome ballistics, high rounds count and talk about compact compared to an AR pistol

    • @Buddyspike11
      @Buddyspike11  5 років тому +1

      I agree if you want something compact there's so many better cartridges like 300 blackout or as you said the FN five-seven or even the old standby favorite for me 7.62x39 all great. No need to neuter the capability of your 556 by shooting it out of such a small rifle.

    I know this is an old video. With that said, all my AR's have 20 inch barrels. I'm not a door kicker so I don't need short or compact. The 5.56 round needs SPEED to do its thing. I have yet to see a deer, man, coyote, or whatever else walks around the woods of eastern North Carolina that can survive a properly place 62 grain switft scirocco II with a mv of 3000 fps. Now where my 20 inch AR10 is concerned, a 155 grain Amax going 2700 fps will kill anything with a pulse. If I can see it I can kill it out to further than I have any business trying. 20 inch barrels just plain work (for me).

    The 20" is the key to defeating body armor those extra 4" allows the powder to burn behind the round a little longer and gets the velocity up higher the 556 was developed for a 20" and the velocity is why it shines u start getting shorter barrels and the velocity starts to fall off not saying it isn't still lethal u just loose the hydraulic shock factor

    Long barrels have a uncool connotation because of all the older fudds that hung onto their pre-ban Dissapators who talk down the modern rifles people build today. Outside of A1 retro builds and SPR builds, people don't want to build long-barreled rifles because of how heavy and difficult to maneuver they are, compared to shorter rifles, if used in a practical (combat/defense) manner.

    Marines have been carrying the m4 with a 14.5" barrel since 2003 and made the official switch in 2015. All of my qualifications after boot in 2008 and my deployment was with an m4. Effective range is only a difference of 55 yds between a 20" and 14.5". A 20" barrel and wooden stock make firing an m16 out of a humvee window pretty difficult. Unless your target is wearing lvl 3 steel plates the 14.5" is still just as effective. Hadjis rarely get their hands on soft armor (which a 14.5 has no problem with anyway) and pretty much never get plates so the extra fps isn't necessary. I do own a 20" upper but only for a shit hits the fan scenario and I'm actually fighting someone with armor. Your typical self defense scenario is not going to involve armor so a sub 16" barrel is fine for those applications. The other reason I own a 20" upper is for congruency with my 5.56 ammo stock. I'd rather go to my ar10 at 15" for armor piercing and range extending capabilities.

      Yeah I don't understand the concept of shorting the barrel of your AR-15 if you're still going to be shooting 556. But I wouldn't say the Mini-14 is irrelevant it just doesn't seem like ruger's really done anything with that line of rifles they're kind of just in the mindset like it's here if you want it what I'd really like to see is maybe a little bit more aftermarket support come back for the rifle and then maybe Ruger could drop the price of the dam magazines. lol

  • @tilepusher
    @tilepusher 5 років тому

    IMHO, if you can only have 1 AR for defense, the 20" 5.56 is a great option. Still if you are not limited on how many AR's that you can own, a 20" 6.5 Grendel is better for long ranges & 16" & shorter barrel 5.56 are lighter, for extended travel on foot. My thinking is be like a Golfer, have many Gun's, each for a set purpose. I have 2 20 GA & 1 12 GA shotguns for close range, a 16" & 18" 5.56 for close to mid range, 2 20" 6.5 Grendel's for mid to long range, 1 18" 50 Beowulf for anti vehicle use, 2 AK's because they can handle abuse & the ammo is cheap & a 16" PSA KS-47, because it is so cool. I haven't built any AR pistols or short barreled rifles yet & I can't think of a reason to. I also have 6 pistols & they are lighter, more maneuverable & concealable than any AR pistol. As mentioned by "West Desert Shooter", I would love to get a FN PS90, it is my ideal for a very concealable, high capacity(50 round mags) rifle.... but I am way too cheap to buy one & it's pricey ammo. I should mention for the haters out there, I am a Poors & everything that I have built or bought is based on High Value. I would never consider buying a Daniel Defense or Novenski product..... unless I was much richer. Everyone has their own ideas for owning guns, I Love You ALL. My friends rib me for not saving up & buying a DD or BCM complete rifle & I tell them, maybe I will, after I have stockpiled enough ammo & gotten more training...... I don't know if you can ever have enough ammo or training!

    This is old video I realize but I’m in favor of the 20” especially if 5.56 is going to be expected to do all it can…..it was developed for the 20” barrel M16. I think people copy what they see on tv and the military. Yes the foot soldier has a M4 carbine but he’s being looked over by a 308 or at the very least a 5.56 DMR somewhere. The 16” AR15 is great for a lot of things but simply can’t generate the muzzle velocity at extended ranges like the 20”. If I had to choose one, it would be the 20”.

  • @KawaTony1964
    @KawaTony1964 5 років тому +1

    I thought that, too, but if you look at actual data, the barrel length doesn't make as big a difference as I thought it would. Search for "5.56 nato ballistics barrel length", and you'll find lots of data like that at rifleshooter.com. I put it all into a spreadsheet, and, by my calculations, a drop in barrel length from 20" to 16.5" results in only a 9.2% reduction in muzzle energy. Also check out UA-camr InRangeTV and his series WWSD (What Would Stoner Do?). They have a guy on several videos who is an engineer at Faxon barrels, and he is just a wealth of information. It was a revelation when he explained to me that the most accurate barrel is the shortest one - as long as it's long enough for the range at which you are shooting.
