Here is an Italian interview which is really worth reading of Alexander Malofeev also at the age 16.
«Listen only to my music. I'm not a genius nor a freak of nature "
The young Russian protagonist of the International Festival in Brescia on Sunday 27:
One can find oneself amongst the best of the best, once, if by chance. But when the occasions start to multiply, there must be a solid reason behind it. Alexander Malofeev can now see his own name in the main concert seasons, alongside his most illustrious colleagues; at just 16 years old. This is also the case at the International Piano Festival: on Friday Daniil Trifonov played there, on Saturday there were the vertiginous scales (and the miniskirts) of Yuja Wang, and on Sunday the Teatro Grande in Brescia welcomes the boy who has reached the heights of the classical musical Olympus.
But don't call him a baby phenomenon, even if he is also an ace in chess: ‘If they consider you a phenomenon because you are 15 or 16 years old, it means that after a couple of seasons you will be mediocre again; instead, I would like to become a protagonist of the great Russian culture’. Speaking of himself, he also shuns the nickname of genius: ‘At least a century should pass in order to use this term for a person: now we say that Bach and Rachmaninov were geniuses, and I can't fall into this category first of all because I've only been playing for 11 years’; that is, since he was 5. But already at 8 he could interpret one of the most spectacular and beloved concertos in piano literature, Tchaikovsky's first: ‘It is the one I have performed most often, many times with Valery Gergiev: the first time when I was 12 years old, after having won the competition in Astana, then everywhere, from Japan to Finland, last year at La Scala’ where the public fell in love with the pale blond boy who knows how to set the keyboard on fire. ‘Once I also played together with Gergiev: he who also conducted, Denis Matsuev and I as soloists in Mozart's Concerto for three pianos’.
The program he puts together could make your wrists tremble, between Beethoven's Appassionata and Prokofiev's Seventh, Schubert and Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker transcribed by Pletnev. ‘Does it frighten me to perform in important Theatres? Honestly no; as regards to the repertoire, if I bring certain pieces to the public it is because I think I play them well’. A certainty that is rooted in the love for music: ‘It absorbs all of my life and my thoughts: I realized I wanted to be a pianist the first time I heard a concert, and I realized that I could become one when I started winning competitions. If I can, I practise for 12, 14 hours a day, but don't think of me as a sad, strange or asocial boy: I had a normal childhood, I played and laughed, today I have many friends and not only at Gnessin (the Moscow school for talented musicians, ed). I also follow football, supporting Dinamo Moscow and Barcelona. I simply love music to madness and when I play I am happy, as soon as I can, I get to the piano’.
Without ever becoming a slave: ‘When I go to big cities for concerts I like to prepare myself by studying the places and their culture, if I can, I visit palaces and museums. For example, these days I would like to discover something about Giacomo Quarenghi, an architect from Bergamo who built the Hermitage Theater and the Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg; I am very interested in your architects, for example Aristotele Fioravanti, who created the Assumption Cathedral in the Kremlin’. In recent days he has also crossed paths with Trifonov and Wang: ‘I always learn a lot from the encounters with these great musicians; if only I could say all of the things that Gergiev has taught me…’. But even here he does not want to give the idea of the small phenomenon among the great ones: ‘I just hope that people don't buy their entrance tickets looking for a child-tightrope walker show, but they instead come to the Theater to enjoy the music; I don't intend to exhibit myself, but I try to be a go-between for Beethoven's or Tchaikovsky's beauty; for this is why I feel safe and calm while on stage: I sit on the shoulders of their greatness’.

Absolutely wonderful in every way! Even then He was so natural and unassuming. As He has grown up He has become even more unassuming and never takes the gift he has for granted. He works hard but to him it is his love and life and just wants to perform to the very best! His biggest critic is himself as he says as he always wants to strive to perform even better. To me, he is just a lovely person with a wonderful persona! Love him dearly. Thank you Eve for your ever fantastic videos of Alexander.

The progression from younger to older in Alexander's interviews and his performances, at least the ones that are available here, is fascinating. In his earliest performances he seemed to concentrate on the mechanics of playing, just to be sure he got it right. This interview touches on that as well. One reason I like the recent Rhapsody on Paganini is that he seems to not worry about the mechanics and have some fun, illustrated by the little smile at the conductor at the end. Hopefully the problems with having him perform in the U.S. can be resolved favorably so some of us can share in the events in person! And thank you, Eve, for bringing us this segment!

Thanks Eve to you and your friends for this precious translation! It’s beautiful to see also Alexander’s mental development as well as the musical one. Have you noticed? To me in this interview he seemed more worried about the notes and the perfection of the executions, and too much critical of himself, after few years with the Arkhangelsk interview he said that music is not about notes and perfection. I mean, being critical is very important, but not too much because perfection doesn’t exist because it’s itself a weakness, and over time I think that he became more acquainted of this.I don’t want to be misunderstood as well, he showed also in this video a maturity and a conception of work and practice that are overwhelmingly remarkable for his young age and inspire us every day.But you know,I see also a mental development, maybe I am wrong but each of us have a mental development over the time and experience and I think it’s beautiful to see also the development of our favourite pianist. Thanks again Eve❤️

Hello Carla,I believe Alexander must have some mental development just as his amazing music. But here his opinion of music is to deliver information and unique emotions to people, that’s from his very young age. You may see the article I posted here in the top comment. He’s not frightened to play in the important stage and he’s confident in his performance,he feels safe and calm. But at the same time he’s the most important critic of himself and I believe now he still is. He has a big heart. That’s what a great musician must have.
