I believe Loraine is suffering from postpartum depression right after the birth of callum, this explains why she leaves callum alone in the car and why she was so unresponsive to the cop as well. On top of her preexisting mental health issues

    • @babygurleatsshickennuggits4201
      @babygurleatsshickennuggits4201 2 роки тому +131

Oh most definitely she was suffering from it, since she had no support system it was hard for her to do anything, especially bonding with her son. I think due to her never really bonding with him she grew to dispise him. I theorize that her mom also had postpartum depression, and that's why it was so east for her to leave. Sadly I think that if Loraine left Callum in fostercare I think it may have been better for the both of them

Probably. But iirc, the other games set in this universe confirms that all the supernatural stuff is real and Winter uses the park to siphon emotions in order to give him power and immortality. Some people have their negative emotions amplified and that's what's going on with Lorraine. Winter, as the Bogeyman, drove her to kill Callum so he could further feed off her despair.

@Kirsten Marie I don't think it took much convincing on her part to do so. I felt bad for her up until it seemed like she might kill him. I don't understand how someone isn't able to love their child, it doesn't make sense to me. But I understand her pain and turmoil towards that she doesn't love him, I wish the worse for her. Winter gave her the ice pick and held onto her as it went down, but he never forced her to kill Callum. He moved away and she did it anyway. He did have to nudge her very much, but she still made that choice herself.

I think this might be obvious but I think callum was the kid found behind the cotton candy machine. With the themes of the games and characters seemingly snapping before the murders I don’t think the boogie man is real I think Lorraine just snapped one day and killed callum which is why she keeps going back to the park and why Hansel and Gretel keep coming up. The story is told through her perspective and her mind is deteriorating, she probably just snapped one day and killed her kid and she’s using the “park curse” to justify losing 2 people to the park

A supernatural entity that forces its way into the mind of its mentally unstable prey and forces them to commit heinous acts. Expect mind you, I find The Park considerably creepier. No hate to The Babadook, it’s one of my favourite horror movies, but I think The Park is considerably creepier in both narrative and environment. It’s also WAYYY more messed up than the movie.

I can never say enough how much I love psychologically scary movies or games. This game was so dark but this kind of horror can happen to anyone minus the supernatural aspects and implications. I think I appreciated the fact that not everyone takes to parenthood like it's the best thing ever. Single mothers are often abandoned and neglected by the same system that claims to fight against child neglect and abortion of unwanted pregnancies. Not all children need to be with their mothers. I liked that the game didn't spell out for us Callum's fate. We know something horrible happened.
Poor Lorraine was doomed from the start. It doesn't need to be explained but she definitely had severe post partum depression coupled with grief of losing her boyfriend, Don. Everyone that could have helped Lorraine absolutely failed her and some people even abandoned her with full on cruelty. Callum should have never been given back to his mother.

It's worth keeping in mind that the Atlantic Island Park in which the game takes place is a dungeon in the Secret World MMORPG, with the Bogeyman as a boss fight in that park. So even if a lot of the specific imagery and sequencing can be attributed to her deteriorating me talk state or hallucinations, the Bogeyman and the other stories about the supernatural at the park like the Crows and Mascot are actually true things that occured, as well as the story of Nathaniel Winters.

  • @karanhdream
    @karanhdream Рік тому +105

There's this book called "Regret maternel" or maternal regret written by a French woman. Basically, it describes how she experienced maternity and how if she were to get a do-over, she wouldn't have kids. She says she loves her child more than her own life and makes the distinction between not liking being a mother yet still love her child.
Maternal regret is rather taboo. Being a mother and finding that well, you don't like it and that it wasn't for you after having a child is hard to talk about. Women who experience such emotions are shamed into silence. This game's protagonist, Lorraine, not only experiences post-partum depression (and maybe even post-partum psychosis) but maybe also maternal regret. It's not that she hates her son, she just doesn't like being a mother.
The hypocrisy of western society in that regard is limitless and cruel. Motherhood is glorified to an unhealthy degree and rarely described for what it truly is. It is full of joys yes; but also sacrifices, compromises and constant giving while getting very little in return. Just like being a father is not for every man, being a mother is not for every woman. Yet we accept more readily that some men are not made for fatherhood and expect that all women are made for motherhood at the same time. I am the grandchild of a woman who definitively should *NOT* have had children. Of course it is because she did that I am here but I can still acknowledge that she was so not made for motherhood and how she screwed up her children mentally and emotionally.
This game is genius in how it addresses those taboo issues of maternity, depression and regret. The cannibal metaphor I think can be interpreted in many ways. The one I favour is how Lorraine felt she was "devoured" by her role as a mother, devoured by her child and all the expectations laid on her. Expectations she was not ready for and never wanted in the first place.
Motherhood really needs to be redefined, or rather just parenthood in general. The emotional charge on women's mind is just so heavy... The role and place of the father figure too needs to be re-thinked. Space for dialogue, emotional acknowledgment and validation is much needed. If only to spare future generation from experiencing the same traumas all over again.

That was a very insightful comment. As a man I have to admit everything you say is true, and since it doesnt really directly concern me or affect me (not being a woman and therefore not being able to be a mother) I have never thought about it before. But this helped me understand the pressure some women go through better.
For the "modern" world we live in there is still way too much stigmata, stereotypes and social pressure in our society. For women and men alike.
These bullshit hundreds of years old expectations and views we hold towards men and women are very toxic.

I don't remember much of the lore for that area. But the Owner of the park and the Bogy Man are one in the same. Using the children to basically live forever and corrupting others. But obviously its easier to target those who already have their own demons. So Loraine is dealing with Depression and the like with the demonic Bogy man using it so he can get Callum's soul.

While the theories about this being grief/all in her mind, there is the Dev's other game The Secret World, in which The Boogeyman is a real being.
So all of her hallucinations are true/based on her reality, but made even more vivid by the actual monster.
Which is even more terrifying, dealing with an actual monster while being someone with serious mental issues.

so we know the witch is her mental health. she cares about calem, she talks about how she feels like they are hansel and grettle. she feels like it’s them against the world. but there money and mental state kept getting in her way. (in her mind) she became abusive and abrasive at times, and that part of her was the witch. which she also directly states but it is also heavily implied
it’s also implied her parents are abusive, part of the boogeyman is torturing kids into good behavior. i think she becomes even more guilty of her being voilent to her kid, because it happens to her. she felt weak.
she killed her son, ate him and then said he went missing.
the boogeyman did haunt the place, i do believe that.
i think she also started drinking
i don’t think she remembers the killing part. JUST that his son got lost. i think she keeps coming back to the park even years later (why the park is now abandoned and we see the first time she lost her son vs now. plus the context clue line about her always coming back to the park. i think this is years later the ordeal and she forgets and remembers things until during this visit, she remembers everything and relieves what she did

Interesting how when she discovers the replica of the house her and Don lived in, she refers to Callum as "his" [Don's] son. Not "our" son. This pretty clearly reflects her detachment from Callum. That he isn't part of her. That he isn't something she feels innate desire to care for.
It oddly paralleled the note Loraine's mother wrote to her. About Loraine being more "his" daughter than hers.

I don't know if this is just a coincidence or not, but the fact that the the mention of Dunwich in the medical services implies a possible Lovecraft/cosmic horror implications to the story. While this isn't in the same universe, in Fallout 3 and 4 there are two locations with some supernatural things going on that have the name Dunwich in them (Dunwich Building in FO3 and Dunwich Quarry in FO4), the fact that name shows up here is something. Also the fact that the Dunwich emergency services seemed to let a mentally unstable person out and get their kid back seems suspicious, like they were working with the monster/Nathan, or at the very least inflenced by something greater.
Also the shirt that Calum is wearing at the end has Cthulu on it for fucks sake. Basically there's a real possibility that there's elements of H.P. Lovecraft/cosmic horror responsible for the events of the game and what happened at the park itself.

The game itself was a good watch. Next to the horror aspects, I actually got creeped out by certain details I connected that may provide a further backstory to the Park founder Nathaniel Winter. First, he was adamant on building the Park on apparantly cursed grounds, which already is strange. Then we learned he kidnapped kids from the Park and "extracted" their emotions, seemingly feeding off of their energy. Since he purposely chose a cursed place and used children, my mind immediately went to rituals regarding black magic. Another hint was the mention of "immortality" which can be interpreted from an entity perspective (food from negativity/strong emotions) or a person (I rather not go into too much detail here because it is f*cked up enough), it was then mentioned that a "mob" hunted down Nathaniel Winter. If we consider the possibility of his crimes against children, this reaction makes sense enough for people seeking justice, especially if the owner was most likely a powerful and influential individual who was protected by the state despite his crimes. Otherwise the Justice system would have dealt with him, not regular people. After he died, his evil deeds turned him into an evil entity himself who, in order to keep existing, relied on people like Laurene with strong negativity (food) and children (to continue with his sick desires).

Everything was a retelling of how it all started up until the point she couldn't take it and took matters to her own hands.

Bought this on my nintendo switch last night didn't take long to beat but was a very eerie intriguing story. Half of the time it feels like your on Lorraines drugs walking around an abandoned park falling apart. I think Lorraine quit taking her pills and was growing very irritated with her son having mental health issues and just wanting to get rid of him. I think he ran away from home(to get away from his abusive mother) to the place his dad was last at before he died( the park) or Lorraine was playing hide and seek with him at the abandoned park(hence why Callum kept saying come find me) and the chipmunk dude was still living there in the house of horrors. Having read the newspaper articles and concluded that a lot of tragedies have happened here, Lorraine takes this into consideration. The chipmunk dude killed him and Lorraine knows it so she goes to the cops and is having mixed feelings about it somewhat feeling guilty and trying to plant false memories to help her feel better and cope with it hence why she stabs him in her recollected memory because she feels like a bad mother.

Lorraine is a character i can't be sympathetic towards, she's resentful towards her son, who is the ONLY remaining memory of her husband. And at some point in the game, you find a dead body of a man behind a building with a axe on the wall. I think it's implied she killed this employee who wanted to check on her since she's been in there for a while, she's also wearing a hatchet necklace, which i think is a implication that she is the one who killed her own son, everything we see was in her mind, she snapped.

Also, in the end she says that in the original story the mother and the witch are both the same person 🤷‍♀️ With all the references to canibalism too I wonder if she actuallly ate him too 😅 Since she says her heart and head go to the park, I imagine she went to the park after she had already killed her son where she came accross the bogeyman/Mr Winters and she was chasing her son’s ghost. Not accepting that he was already gone by her own hand. Even the bogeyman says that Callum had fallen in the hands of the witch (=the mother) 🤔

if you can't become a parent.. THEN FIND SOMETHING ELSE TO DO WITH YOUR LIFE, and take "intimacy" out of your daily life!
i am talking about strengthening one's body and mind, leaving intercourse away.
also ... "THE WORLD" =/= the us.
the us is merely but a single nation sharing 2 other nations with the North American continent.
Canada to the north and Mexico to the south.
Denmark to the utmost north and to the north west Alaska.
the "us" is NOT the world.
so if you can't control what you can and can't do in a single "nation" you still have 194 nations to go for.
why why limit yourself to the "self proclaimed [i am planet earth all of it]"?

China, Mexico, Argentina, Poland, Slovakia, Thailand, Canada, The United Kingdom, Australia, Belgium.
if a single nation with "self deifying above all else complex disorder" VISIT *THE WORLD*
my personal point stood at "if you can't stand having kids, ABANDON INTERCOURSE ALTOGETHER!" intimacy IS NOT essential. and you can live without it.

Also, I think it is greatly hinted at that she killed her own son with how near the end it was show her sacrificed her son.
