What a crock of BS, we do NOT have squatter law in Canada, that is only in the USA and it was used so people could take over Native land..... the police can easily remove them if they cannot prove they have a legal right to be there, I know, it was used on me.... I used to plow snow at this place in Ottawa, the property manager for Control X realty lived in the next building, I took over the lease from a friend of mine and paid the Property manager, but he never paid the office and never told them, he pocketed the cash.... so when the Super came to collect rent, I told him I paid it to the manager. A few days later, the super and the cops showed up, the cops where nice about it, they even made the super wait in hallway. They explained the law and gave me 48 hours to get out and because I didnt get a receipt, I was SOL, as I had no way to prove that I was legally allowed in the Apt. and the guy I took over the lease from, was out west somewhere, I had no idea how to contact them. So I call BS on your story.
Ex landlord here. Didn't pay back when rents were cheaper. Others did that plus trashed the place. We went bankrupt. It happens all the time, particularly to newer landlords. So we would rather just leave our property empty and contribute to lack of affordable homes. My brother also tried to rent out, tenants trashed his place. What is $20,000 rents and $50,000 worth of damage? Now he has roommates he can trust. Makes less money, but they r dependable and help with the house and even shopping.
Blame the current housing crisis on the government of Ontario for removing rent control on units built after 2018, greedy landlords have raised the prices to unachievable levels for most Canadians. The government has let too many people into the country with not enough housing and the new high prices ensure that new Canadians won't be able to afford anything either. The Landlord Tenant Board is operating with a wait list of months for cases to be heard, tenants and landlords are suffering because this board just hasn't been able to get their act together.
It’s theft. They are stealing the use of this guys property.The laws need to change. If you aren’t paying rent as per the contract in the tenancy agreement….don’t let the door hit you on the way out. I’ve been renting here for 5 years. Excellent landlord. I pay my rent,don’t cause disturbances and keep the place clean. If anything needs repair it’s done within 24 hours.
I am consolidating properties now even in Texas just to be safe. As the economy becomes worse and worse, this will be more and more common. Going with stock and US T bills for the foreseeable future... The "social contract" has been killed 10x over in the last 10 years and is only getting worse. If society and government actually did what it was supposed to do, I'd have already been working towards dozens of rentals. But, it is working against good natured tax paying law abiding people in every way, more and more. I wish it wasn't the case.

This is trespassing, this is a police issue, NOT LTB. The new owner never had a lease agreement with these squatters.
