This is great. My controller was so bad that the minute I turned it on it just went crazy, surfing the screen, and pushing random buttons. This tutorial fixed it right up. There was one thing missing for me though, and no other tutorial seems to address it either but it made it hard for me to get my controller back together. There's a little piece of rubber that sits in the vacant part of the controller housing, and its purpose is to act as a safe go-between between your needle, or paperclip, or whatever, and your internal reset button. When I opened the housing it fell right out and it took me a few seconds to realize where it might have come from. Then it took me about 20 minutes to figure out how it goes back in, If anyone else has this issue the best I can tell you is that the little button/knob on the rubber piece FACES the internal reset pad, though it LOOKS like it might fit into the little rest hole in the controller-housing. It doesn't; it IS the button/knob that hits the reset pad on the circuitry board. Otherwise you'd tear right into he pad and destroy it with whatever metal object you jammed in there. By the way, I also had to use a tiny piece of electrical tape to hold the button back in place, otherwise it just kept falling back out via gravity. I used a tiny (1/8"-ish) piece of tape on the side of the button, running down the little slot that keeps it in place. This held it in place while I got the housing back together. Anyway, my controller works great again. I cleaned it off, cleaned the crevices and everything, and now it's like new. So thanks for the tutorial.
Lol that was me when I opened up a PS4 controller that needed a new stick as the rubber was completely destroyed on the old one. I had an extra rubber piece and I was so confused as to where it came from, until I realized the exact place it came from.
For those having ANY D-Pad, Buttons, Joy Stick issues, stuck buttons and issues, please try this method before chucking your Playstation 3 controller out the window!! This really worked for me when my Controller was having slight issues working when I was trying to use it for my PS1, PS2, N64 Emulators.. It kept acting funny repeatedly and moving the wrong buttons when I was trying to set "Controller Settings" right. It's already a headache getting to play right, but this saved me $50-60 bucks buying a new or used one. Thanks for making this video fam. I did everything you said and actually had everything necessary and now my buttons work like a Charm.
Hey guys just as a small tweak to this video for the safety of your controller please unplug the battery pack before you touch anything else on the motherboard or that strip of contacts for the buttons. The reason being is that you could short something out by giving off static electricity by mistake & could damage the functionality of the controller itself. The cotton swabs make get snagged on something & leave behind cotton strands that may also do similar damage. The tape idea is fine & I will try it. Thanks for the video Clay!
A++ vid man, even 8 years later! This method fixed my controller perfectly, and I'm now kicking myself that I didn't see it before I swapped out all my other controllers that I could've fixed....
lol i have this problem in gta v, i brake and try to move away from something front of me, the character changes the radio, pull up the phone, shoots his gun,, turn on the headlights, sounds the horn and last thing he bails out of the car
same with me ...but my case is even worse...whenever I m playing online ..and roll....it gets down character switch section and changes the character...or will be in that section ...and I have to smash my cont. then it works
This was extremely helpful! My first controller started showing a pull to the right on the left stick it became unusable. I retired it, thinking it was gunked up and dirty and used my 2nd one. I decided to take it apart and clean it, but found no obvious dirt and put the project aside. A few months later my second controller started having the same issue (analog pull to the right, random button pushes) and I grew suspicious that it might not be dirt causing the problem and searched google, ended up at this video. I have just finished fixing both of my controllers, tested them and they work wonderfully,! Thank you so much for making this video, you just saved me 50 bucks.
You’re an absolute legend for making this video… Bought a secondhand ps3 and both controllers were doing this, now 20 minutes later and everything’s sorted!
Here in 2022, you sir saved my controller. I was loosing any hope of getting it to work properly, followed your video step by step and now it works like a charm! Don't know if you'll ever read this, but thank you!
I am yet another person this video has helped immensely. To answer some common questions in the comment section: a. Yes, you can use other kinds of tape. I, for instance, used duct tape. I took out the little piece of rubber and cut out duct tape to fit it perfectly. Just make sure that the top side, facing the little plastic strip, is not a sticky side. b. Screwdrivers. You can get little sets of screwdrivers made especially for computer stuff. I luckily already had one, as I work with computers pretty often. Make sure to use the smallest one possible. If you use one just a little too big, it'll wear on the screw and make it unscrewable. If you are in doubt, go smaller! c. After an error, at first try, I discovered that if you do not evenly cover the rubber with tape, you might find that a button won't work. Go even, Steven. Again, OP, thank you so much!! Finished The Last of Us in your honor!
Thanks a million man! When playing BF3 I would keep throw grenades or use equipment at random and I would always rage because it would always happen at times when I encounter an enemy. Random button will also be pressed when I apply pressure to the left side of the controller and it would piss me off at times. Thanks again, I wish I could hug you.
When you put the board back on and screw it in, there's little room for the tape to get loose or move around because the board is sqeezing the tape, foam and ribbon together so I doubt it'll get loose quickly. If it does, then you can just add a thicker piece of tape to it.
For a quick fix (without disassembling anything) I found pulling up the R3 and L3 joy sticks all the way up kinda pulling them out of place, and clicking both buttons again seems to work!
Dude you are the real hero here I didnt have to spend hours trying all this shit in the video. So glad I checked the comments section. Hugs and kisses bro
Does this also fix a drifting left analog stick? When I play my character starts walking to the left on their own. I need a fix for this to save on a new controller.
Holy shit, this was actually the problem with many of my PS3 controllers! I always thought it's because the contacts get dirty after a while and thus misfire, but after cleaning everything thoroughly I still got random button misfires when pushing the left stick. Now it actually makes sense that the pad underneath the contacts in that position loses the pressure against the circuit board contacts after a while. After putting a foam tape (thick but squishable) underneath the contact pad and some more foam type between the battery and lower casing for good measure, the misfired buttons stopped! Thank you man! Old ass video but still useful!
Thanks so much. I noticed before this if I play cod and run I would switch my gun a reload and in skate I would jump of my board for no reason thanks! :D
Mine was worse, I played this first person shooter game and if I moved my left analog forward my L2 would trigger and I would drop a bag I would need and then that's it! Everything failed! And I rage quit and hit my controller against the couch
no it was payday the heist which don't let u hold L2, just tap and it comes out your ass like a fart, andthe bag is so big people use it as bullet cover, better than the iron man
This needs to be posted everywhere!!! I fixed literally all 3 of my controllers and each 1 worse than the last pushing buttons in all different ways and this made all 3 like new. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
*Note* Anyone trying out the steps shown in the video. Be careful while putting back the all together.. Any slightest misfit will ruin the controller. I did break one of the plastic holder to the R button, but managed fixing it. (You can also use a double sided tape 3M or so of the same size and stick it above the black padding)
I took my controller apart to replace a joystick.. took about 8 tries to get it back together. Every time I’d put the last screw back in, flip it over and something else was out of place.. til I finally got all billion pieces in the right place... AND I STILL HAD ISSUES. Random buttons going crazy.. found this video, and for my specific issue, you are now MY HERO.. seriously you belong in the hero hall of fame.
Walter White That's what happened to me! It's the problem in this video, your problem, and my character runs around in circles! Does anyone know how to fix this?
I have a problem when i use left analog stick it sometimes in game i move left like i moved analog stick to the left but didnt its not always happening sometimes it does do that pls help me
Wish i watched this vid yesterday before my controller started doing random things without me touching it triangle the d-pad R1 square and X would all try to go off by themselves and its been doing this for a long time and long story short, RIP my red controller its in 100 pieces in the garbage can the buttons are in a ziplock bag and there are small red plastic parts and chips from it left stuck on the bottom of my shoe.
elitemeows use a longer driver, making sure it's the correct size, bit (philips head, not flathead) and make sure to lean hard (put some body weight into it, holding it in ur hand, too... I'm making sure u don't break ur controller more) and turn it counter-clockwise/anti-clockwise. Remember, the longer ur driver is, the more torque you have, and vice-versa. Turn the screw clockwise to tighten it. make sure not to mix up the screws (don't mix the inside screws with the outside ones) and don't forget to remove the battery (easily done by pulling it by the wire, trust me, I worked in a repair shop) Easy!
My controller has been going full ape on me the past couple days. Whenever I play games like the Sly Cooper Collection, The Jak and Daxter collection, or Doom 3 BFG edition, the controller will start randomly open and close the ps home menu and then it will go to the turn off console menu and will freeze there until I plug/unplug it, it does this constantly and sporadically, ruining the gameplay. My controller works just fine on games like Borderlands 2 and lollipop chainsaw, and it works on other ps2 remasters like the final fantasy X remaster and ps1 games. I've tried just about everything except taking a hammer to the damn thing but to no avail and the problem persist, has anyone else experienced this or should I just get a new controller?
+TheUltimateKnucklehead hey man I just wanna know if you found a fix with that problem? is it with the controller or with the ps3?cause I'm having the same problem.
Seph Jimenez The controller itself freaks out and opens the menu sporadically, its not the ps3 cause I have a cruddy back up third party controller. It also depends on the game, it freaks out on my sly cooper collection, but not games like my killzone collection and such.
Make sure the metal spring is pushing against the white plastic on one end and the shoulder button (grey) plastic on the other. Yours is likely not pushing against the white, so there is no tension.
Ivan Lee I would say any electronics store would have those types of screwdrivers the best kind to use is one for computers or if you know someone who has the little screwdrivers for taking apart their glasses eyeglasses frame those will work very well as well hope this helps you👍
For the FIRST TIME in my life am i commenting on a UA-cam DIY video. Thanks Man you saved my time energy and money. was going to buy a new one this evening and now I don't have to. THNAKS A TON MAN :) BIG Thumbs Up Try this before you go out to buy a new one. :) :) :) :)
+Young Justice Try a different sized screw driver, I tried this a month ago and couldn't get it to work, but tried it now and was easy with the right one.
Not to sure to be quite honest, if you have a set of screws just try the small set, and keep trying until they screw out easily. Might need some force is it's rusting or old
+TWIN36FUN I'm not sure but ,if anyone else wants to learn about how to repair playstation try Alkarno Playstation Fixer Alchemist (do a google search ) ? Ive heard some interesting things about it and my friend got great success with it.
I can't believe it. I had the Sixaxis PS3 Controller in my drawer and I just pulled it out to set it up with my windows 10 desktop. I had gotten in despair cause it was going NUTS without me pressing anything. And I stumbled onto your video. For the first time since I bought it I can FINALLY use it! Thank you so much! This works A CHARM
Ok bro u saved my life, I got sick and tired of dying in COD 2, I fixed my controller at 2:30 in the freaking morning and I love it.!!!! Ur video is 1000x a million, very helpful, thanks ;)
It actually worked, you absolute mad lad. Thank you so much. In case anyone else was wondering, when you roll the tape into a little tube, it's ok to do it with the sticky side on the inside.
Man OMG thank you sooo much that I've found this video you've made. I thought one of my kids broke my playstation and was literally about to go out and buy another. Crazy thing was that I went out and bought another controller. But I ended up buying a used controller. Smh...(my luck had the same problem) you've saved me from wasting money buying a new PS3 and blaming my kids or wife(entire family uses it for Netflix). Thank you once again. I've also gave it a like and subscribed. Thank you man.!!!!
Dude! THANK YOU sooooooooo much! I was so upset yesterday when I got my PS3 back n hooked it up to my new tv to play in hd for the first time. My controller was going crazy I wouldn't even touch a joystick or a button and it would act like I held buttons down etc. Your video helped me fix it and saved my $60 so again thanks for taking the time to put this video up!
Thank you so much brother! I was about 5 minutes away from giving up and buying a new controller before i ran into your video. Such a simple fix for a problem that i didnt think anyone else was having. Thanks again for taking the time to post this video, and also for saving me some money.
I can’t express enough how grateful I am you made this video I just bought this refurbished controller and this issue arose, now it’s working beautifully. Thank you mr W
OMG it worked perfectly, I just fixed my 10-year-old controller, I was going to buy a new one but now I don't have to, thanks for this easy and amazing tutorial
never before have I ever commented on a diy fix video before, but this happily my first. To the point, simple, clear and it fkin worked. great video and I dont know why you guys care about video clarity because unless you're blind, I would've understood this video even in lower quality. great job.
BRO!!!! You are awesome! Bought a used ps3 controller and it was super dirty so I disassembled it and cleaned it. Wasn't working after I cleaned it up. My ps3 controller was acting all crazy. Then found this video saved me! Thanks man.
I must admit - I did not expect this to work. But I figured, might as well try. Cut a piece of 2mm double-sided tape to the same size as the rectangular bit in there and stuck it underneath. Now - it's like a brand new controller! Thanks a lot, man. I owe you.
You are a legend! Big thx!! Only 3 more to go now lol. Haven't played ps3 in forever cause all my controllers were all over the place with a mind of their own.
Worked perfectly for me!! Great video regardless of the blurriness. Was looking for this answer for more than a year, now new life has been given to my PS3
Bro, oh my God, thank you so much. I was so pissed at my controllers for constantly messing up. After using this tutorial my controller is finally back!!
My controller was doing the same thing. Gave in and bought a refurbished one from gamestop. It has the same issue. So I did this on my controller and it works! I will return the G-stop one. Thank you! You're the best!
Thank you so so much man. I bought a 2nd hand console and controller started playing up a week later. I thought I was going to have to fork out 100 bucks. Worked great. Thank you so much once again. You're a life saver.
Thanks! Removed some lint from inside the controller, and that fixed my issue. Video's almost 10 years old at this point, and it's still helping people.
So thankful for this video!!!3 of my controllers were going tits up and it's random, sporadic scrolling through all the movies on Netflix was really driving me crazy!! Came very close to shit-canning all my controllers and buying new ones! This was very easy to follow, I didn't totally destroy anything which is generally typical of me, and now I have fully functioning controllers! Thank you thank you!!
I cannot believe this actually worked, and not just for a broken left stick. My L2 was giving me trouble and this fixed it right away. Thank you, sir 👍🏻.
Thank you for sharing this! I was able to fix my kiddo's controller (purchased for $45 used from Game Stop). Store wouldn't take it back or exchange it , so this really helped out. Made my kid's day. Thank you!
This video worked for me for my first and second controller... It was an Absolute Success!!!! Now I can blow my horn, crouch, etc with out jumping out of a car in GTA V, BF4, etc. THANK YOU SOO MUCH BRO!!!
Thank you so much for this! I've been struggling with my controller for over a year. Other videos I saw put me off doing this fix. Your video was easy to follow and clear and I fixed my controller in 5 minutes.
11 years later and still helpful. Thank you
Bro years go by... Its 2020
*And now this video comes in clutch*
Right?! Here a decade later
@@Jack-zj1ug Yea, haha
Bro wake up it's 2011
@@knssssss lmao
Tried it, my controller is now ruling the southern half of my town and has enslaved all residents.
2023 and this video is still helping people, thanks man!
2024 and you’re still saving DualShock 3’s. Thanks.
"your battery.... if you'll just kinda move it to the side"
**drops violently**
😂😂😂😂
This is great. My controller was so bad that the minute I turned it on it just went crazy, surfing the screen, and pushing random buttons. This tutorial fixed it right up.
There was one thing missing for me though, and no other tutorial seems to address it either but it made it hard for me to get my controller back together.
There's a little piece of rubber that sits in the vacant part of the controller housing, and its purpose is to act as a safe go-between between your needle, or paperclip, or whatever, and your internal reset button.
When I opened the housing it fell right out and it took me a few seconds to realize where it might have come from. Then it took me about 20 minutes to figure out how it goes back in,
If anyone else has this issue the best I can tell you is that the little button/knob on the rubber piece FACES the internal reset pad, though it LOOKS like it might fit into the little rest hole in the controller-housing. People saying it doesn't work or instructions unclear, are they mental??? its the easiest thing to do, worked just fine thanx a lot man
Thank you so much! My controller is already pretty old and I was afraid that he's broken after all the time, but you saved him! Thanks!

You're a genius!!!! Just bought an used ps3 and thought the controller was broken, but this fixed it right on, thank you!!!
omg "guys throwing grenades when he should be running" my EXACT problem playing Payday 2 trying to stealth. let's hope this work
+Uyen Tang Same problem lol
this is the first and probably the last time a youtube video has solved one of my problems, thanks man
Instructions unclear. Remote is now a blender.
Pay attention dude. It works perfectly!
You tell him
Remote is *a* blender, or *in a* blender? You're 2 letters away from being either Macgyver or having anger management issues.
How much weed did you consume during this video?
Still the best tutorial out there for this problem. I refer myself and others to it every time they need it.
Man, thanks so much for this- works great, now! I thought I was gonna need to buy a new one.
For a quick fix (without disassembling anything) I found pulling up the R3 and L3 joy sticks all the way up kinda pulling them out of place, and clicking both buttons again seems to work!

+Marktenoh
does it work temporary? or its a permanent fix?.. should i pull them while I'm playing or doesn't matter anytime?
Dallas it's temporary because I've been doing that for a long ass time
This worked for me! Even if it's a temporary fix, thanks dude.
Marktenoh it works but the buttons fidget from time to time

does this also fix the right analog losing its calibracion?(basically my aim doesn't flow when i change it, it just jumps around to the side i aim)
Well I don't know but it is worth a shot.
what are you doing walter, get to work!
Clay Whitehead does the random button push happen only if your controller fell on the ground?
Walter White That's what happened to me! It's the problem in this video, your problem, and my character runs around in circles! Does anyone know how to fix this?
You are a saint.
Thanks!

Remote: YOU MEANT TO PRESS THESE 70 BUTTONS RIGHT
Ben Chong im so late but did u just seriously call a controller a remote? Lol

Ouch.
sadly i cant get the screw out of my controller
Take out the screws by moving your screwdriver to the left... (Righty Tighty Lefty Loosey)

JCB actually the person i had got the controller from had already "stripped" the screws. No need to insult me
7th Flash me too, the screws got striped
Mine got plaid. heh heh heh
Literally one of the easiest fix in the entire galaxy, now my 2 controllers are good as new. Thx man !
Thank you soooo much!
My controllers work like new again!
Maybe go ask an instore expert? If not get a new controller
William Holmes Thanks, I'll probably buy a new one at wal mant because there is no game store where I live, (I live in a rather desolate area...)
+Seph Jimenez sometimes I feel like smashing and running it over
My L2 and R2 buttons now feel loose
Make sure the metal spring is pushing against the white plastic on one end and the shoulder button (grey) plastic on the other. Yours is likely not pushing against the white, so there is no tension.
One decade later, vid came in clutch. Thanks man!
Give that man a Dr. title !!!
does anyone know where to get this screwdriver? really need it thanks!
Ivan Lee I would say any electronics store would have those types of screwdrivers the best kind to use is one for computers or if you know someone who has the little screwdrivers for taking apart their glasses eyeglasses frame those will work very well as well hope this helps you👍
it's at his house
Saved me two controllers
Cool!
Man i can only get 1 screw out, theyre soo tight!!
Sharkasm then* illiterate fuck
Sharkasm really why do u care
+Young Justice Try a different sized screw driver, I tried this a month ago and couldn't get it to work, but tried it now and was easy with the right one.
+ashace1297 wat is the size of the right one , exactly
Not to sure to be quite honest, if you have a set of screws just try the small set, and keep trying until they screw out easily.
Might need some force is it's rusting or old
Did you use a potato to film this
well he has to watch the video to get a problem!
Thanks for the help
You bet!
***** make sure you have the right screwdriver and put some force on it while you twist it left
+TWIN36FUN what kind of screw driver do u have to use?
It's always the L3 ....WHY SONY ? lower your damn price on controllers or make them with some frikkin stability! Stop ripping consumers off
Ok bro u saved my life, I got sick and tired of dying in COD 2, I fixed my controller at 2:30 in the freaking morning and I love it.!!!!
I actually wish I had bought at least one extra controller as some co-op games are still fun with a buddy.
2024 and this saved me from thinking my controllers were broken. thanks so much for this video.
never before have I ever commented on a diy fix video before, but this happily my first. To the point, simple, clear and it fkin worked. great video and I dont know why you guys care about video clarity because unless you're blind, I would've understood this video even in lower quality. great job.
Over a decade and this video is still useful for a problem I just ran into for the 1st time lol.. good video thanks
Just fixed my PS3 controller last night using your tips. Thank you, the thing was button pressing like mad. Now good as new.
Even as late as 2021, this simple DIY fix helped fixed the random button pushes that was almost about to make me grab another controller. Thanks!
THANK YOU so much! You just saved 3 spastic controllers that used to freak out while nothing was being pressed. my hero!
After three years of trying to fix it, it just took a little tape and my controller was fixed... THANK YOU
Didn't think I would be able to fix it because I've never fixed anything electronically in my life, but it did. Thanks!
It worked. Saved me money and took 10 minutes including the time I spent watching the video. Thank you very much!
10 y/o controller, never understood why mine didn't work the same as my brother at the time, saved because of you!
WORKED! your the man! shits been driving me nuts for months on cod.
Dude you are my hero! Just saved me $50! I'm surprised Sony and GameStop havent attempted to have this video removed.
Still works in 2023! Fixed my controller tonight!
This worked! This is still relevant! I hope you reach a million views!
Ran across this tutorial after getting fed up with tossing all my grenades after pressing R3 to run. Thank you! No more wasted grenades.
