Diezel VH4 100W 4-channel Tube Head Review

- In a world full of high-gain guitar amp heads, the Diezel VH4 continues to sit comfortably at the top. The VH4 100-watt head was meticulously engineered to be the most flexible amp of its time, boasting enough player-friendly features to become the centerpiece of any player's rig. After decades on the market, the VH4's design still holds true. With four completely independent channels that range from sparkling clean to frightening levels of gain, there is no sound you can't get from the amp.

I would say that... The VH4 is the John Wick of the amps.
I can honestly say of the hundreds of bands I've gone to see live, the few who used these amps have the absolute best live sound overall. This is definitely an amp that you only see how well it shines when you crank it up and let it breathe!
Who doesn't like a good trouser movement.
This thing is a monster. How Adam Jones uses three separate amps not just one of these I don't know. Brent Hinds has one as well. So wicked. I would have to play one in person because I feel like demos don't do this any justice.
The feel in the room as you play one of these is just astounding. It rumbles through the air like nothing else I've ever played. Highly recommend that you try one out!
Jones uses another amp for clarity, set w/ les disto. 3 amps allow for stereo effects.
@@russwilson2305 i.pinimg.com/originals/9b/d4/14/9bd4143e90f5af2ab7b954e11c103084.jpg found this. Amazing rig, went to my first Tool gig in 2019 and was head-ripping, mountains of bass, really upped the high-mids and clear highs. Justin came in with making the whole ziggo dome clutter and when Danny hit a drum it hit you right in the heart. Don't blame the girl in front of me and my friend for passing out.
Not only was that the best sounding amp i have ever heard it was also by far the best demo of any amp i have ever heard or seen. Well done man, excellent job.
Tried one of these, the clean channel is unbelievable, bell like melodic cleans reminiscent of a piano or really heavy and thick clean with a Les Paul its soooo jangly and sweet. Love the sound of this amp to me if you are playing enough shows to where you can use it as a tool or an investment, go for it. Its far worth it.
Nick, soooo glad to see you doing stuff with Sweetwater! I watched Grim Reaper with Armored Saint & Helloween on a Halloween concert on MTV back in the late 80s AND IT WAS EPIC! I recorded it & practically wore out the VHS tape watching it again & again. I started learning to play guitar in 1987(not that my playing would reflect that, sadly LOL) - what a great time for metal guitar!! You rock, Nick!
Love the granular. Separate loops for each channel nice!
Oh man gain on channel 2 is the best thing ever. So clear and punchy and heavy.
The low-end shattered his teeth
The Brits have to be careful with this amp, for just that reason.
This guy is naturally funny. Great tone demonstration on this amp by the way, lots of riffs instead of just noodling gives a good display of all the different sounds.
remember, the speaker cabinet is just as important as the amp itself. without the frontloaded Diezel cab, this thing probably wouldn't sound as good, and tight in the lowend.
I got to play thru a VH4. I also got to play thru a few high end amps that day. Driftwood, Mezabarrba, and another one I can't remember. I dug the VH4 hands down. If I had the $$$ I would've taken it home.
Alright gonna buy one
* looks at price *
Yeah nvm
lol, why I went with the Diezel VH4 pedal :)
$4,400 is pretty steep. Great tonality and function, though.
It is German hand made amp. Messas in Europe are even higher priced.
I'll stick with my KSR Colossus
Different amps, both are custom made.
The Mesa JP2-C is 4653 dollars(3899 euro) at thomann here.. and 2599 dollars at Sweetwater..
Johan Engström how much is the Vh4 there?
Great demo! Nothing beats the VH4, IMO, many have tried, but none have really got it...
..and you are absolutely correct, it's the one that started it all..beyond Marshall's and Mesa's..right on!..
Have you played a Fryette ultra-lead?
It didn't start anything. It came out in the 90s. The soldano and mark 2 were the trailblazers along with the modded jcms of the past.
Nick Bowcott is a legend in this biz. Good job, sir!
Yes, I still has his 1980 demo, if you know what NWOBHM is all about.
Your best amp demo imo Nick. Love your humor, cheers man!
I see you everywhere lol . I have a vh4 and I can’t get into . Is there a boust to try with it . Maybe the tubes are shot . I’m very disappointed ☹️
@@techdeathhippie6319 lol, I'm all over this here internet. I haven't played a VH4 yet, wish I could say otherwise. Not sure what boosts would be best suited for it.
@@SlinkyT82 both my Herbert’s mk 1 and 3 sound so my better to me . My Vh4 sounds really dull . I’m in shock at that price and feeling this lol
That's like the best amp ever made.
This, the Herbert and the Bogner Shiva are IT!!
Vh4 and herbert do sound very close through diezel cab.
No they do not. I did an A/B comparison deciding on which one to purchase. They do not sound the same. The Herbert is heavier. Herbert is right over there on my amplifier wall.
@@MrKjohnson123 I do not consider, herbert heavier, it is more scooped, vh4 is tighter and have more mids, it means it is heard better in the mix.
I heard them both, yes, there is a slight difference, but because of the scooped mids, herbert sounds heavier, scoop mids on vh4 and you get it. There is also video of them both by lasse, that proves that they are both very close.you just need to know how to dial them.
@@stingcarlsson7988 well, in my hands, the Herbert is heavier. Now that you mention it, yes,the VH4 does have more mids.
Why am I so poor?
because you bought a vh4 obviously. they're amazing, but damn expensive
@@emilysmithguitar_8740 Do you have a VH4? If so, how does it play? I’ve never had the chance to try one.
When he said “rear pickup” and proceeded to play the neck pickup, did he misspeak or have I just had this backwards all this time?
Ordered the FL V30 cab. :D
The veritable Beast God of Amplifiers.
Are you f'ing kidding me?! The sound of this thing is unreal!!!!
I need that reversed marshall, am left handed too
i love that dude! amp is solid aswell.
Man you know you play like a badass! 🤘🤘🤘
WOW!! incredible sound
Hello.
Can u Make a review like this to the Diezel Vh2?
Great regards
Pleaseeeeeeeeeee make a video like this with the VH2 Please
The only thing which i like better than the Amp is the guy who plays it, great man!
metal paradise amp
Nice demo
I'd buy the head and a used Marshall or mesa 4x12 cab with Celesitons in it. I'd also buy a Fender Super Reverb reissue for the clean stuff.
great review thank you very much!!!
It's moving my trousers too.
10:02 Wesley Willis picture in the background....lolololol!!!!!
He has a great song about animals, check it out.
...no guitar in it though.
i saw Papa Het using these the past few years and not the Mesa.
Amazing video of a fantastic amp. Sweetwater is killing it.
lol who is paying you guys to say this stuff?
YES!! SO mean!!
What ......no tool covers. Great amp
lefty master race
Thank jesus we at least have one in Helix now.
Tool riffs or it didn't happen.
I didn't know William Frawley used Diezel
Listen to the andy wood demo of this same amp Absolutely smokes this guy
excellent
completely wins over mesa boogie
Does this have a foot switch? I can't find one for it anywhere..
Hello, Mr. Lumster! That does indeed have a foot switch that's sold separately:
www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/ColumbusMIDI--diezel-columbus-midi-switcher
Thanks for the interest!
Kevin Spunde, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 1732
what cab is it?
Same brand as the amp with Vintage 30’s
I’d rather get the Diezel VHX best of all worlds no pedals needed
Dude sounds like he’s a right handed player playing left handed.
Forest is left handed, and is a beast on fretless bass
You start to question what’s backwards every time you see a lefty 🙃
Just got the VH2. sounds nothing like this. Clean is nice but channel two sound like bees in a can. I must have got a bad one or one with shit tubes. after 3K not Sure what to do but trade it in. pity maybe its the Mesa recto 4x12 V-30's that dont work....or my pick -ups or my dozen guitars. was really hoping just to bang some chords & not have to work for tone like on my MarkV. which sounds better. tried to get some simple 'Enter Sandman' chug...impossible. the Mesa did it though.
I was contemplating buying a VH2, but after reading this not so certain anymore. Were you able to address that "bees in a can" tone?
@@firststep7750 Yes....I sent back the Deizel bought an SLO-100. The clean channel on the VH-2 was superior though. It went into a nice powerful break up as well. SLO-100 is more of a classic sound thick rich creamy gain that is easy to build. Its crunch channel is a rock history lesson. easier for me to play anyway.
@@johnkonstantine9115 Thanks for the reply. Does the SLO-100 do the CH1-Diezel, i.e. superior clean and powerful breakup? In relation to CH2-Diezel: at what gain setting did the can-of-bees start or did it not matter?
🥱Should’ve had Ola Englund demoing this
Find it hard watching lefties!! lol off to sell a kidney to get this
I need my brutality focused!
Awesome amplifier ! Fuck ! The only thing is , I'm a poor man !
Tiene el cajón afuera
I'm sorry, but couldn't they have found a better player to demo this amp?
don't be sorry. He's terrible.
A German Amp!
Want
I bought this amp new and took a beating but the beating I took wasn’t the price. The beating was buying the worst amp in a live setting I have ever owned. This thing no matter what volume and settings you threw at it was swallowed whole in a mix.
jeff mays -My VH$ could not touch my Engl Invader. If you hel a gun to my head and asked me what the best amp in the world is, I say the Invader. Used $1400. Best clean ever. 3 disto channels. MIDI. Reverb. Solo boosts per channel. And more I'm forgetting.
Russ Wilson I had a Steve Morse sig, it killed the vh4 but I wish I would’ve bought the invader instead. It’s much better. I’m very happy with KSR so it’s all good.
jeff mayes -The KSR was not on my radar til I read your post. These things look great!
Russ Wilson Kyle at KSR is a genius and a class act. Seems like we HAVE similar tastes. The 50 watt Ares is truly the holy grail of tone. Kyle struck pure gold. I play the 100 watt Artemis which is a rack mount Gemini. I liken their amps as brutal, not at all harsh like Mesa and forgiving. If you ever talk with Kyle about what amp is right for you tell him I sent you. The invader is a sick amp but if you get your hands on an Ares you’ll clearly hear exactly what I’m saying.
Without mentioning which cab you used, I'm afraid this feedback is quite incomplete.
Of woooolf and maaaan
These are seriously the worst demo videos. This dude is hilariously terrible. Sorry to say, Sweetwater, with all of the phenomenal online demos and personalities on the internet can you justify putting out these things lol... It's hard to watch most times.
I always felt that this overpriced 4k of an amp, sounds like a ball of over saturated mush. Quite frankly, I think it sucks. My mesa MkV sounds so much clearer imo.
I will say however, that channel 1 sounds great, and even channel 2 dimes gain sounds good. If they made this amp with just those 2 channles, I think it would be so much better.
rrguitar1 Your Mesa Mark V is no match to this thing trust me, I have tried both. I ended up with the VH4. They have the VH2 which is a 2 channel version of this amp without the bells and whistles
When 95% of the demo is CHUGGA CHUGGA in drop tuning bullshit, it doesn't sound any different from any other amp. You need to play Guthrie Govan or Al Di Meola style riffs to really hear how expressive it sounds, even with 100 notes per second.
I played a Mark V and was pretty disappointed by the low amount of gain/output on tap. Surprising because it’s what Petrucci plays. This thing sounds pretty good to me.
Nick, you say it's clear and defined WELL, it's clear it is overrated and definitely overpriced no thanks, I'll keep my Mesa Boogie's
here in Germany Mesas are highly overpriced. Think about it. :D
@@awwal7375 just like Diesel is here I have owned a VH4 But in one year it failed me twice at a show the first time it was a fuse no big deal the second time it was cutting out on me BAD TUBE SOCKETS and I had to wait three months to get the amp fixed, Lucky for me that night I had a Mesa Boogie back up Rectifier that was SIX YEARS OLD and when fired up worked great with no problems Sorry overpriced and overrated
alv se escucha como una motocierra v:
Apparently effects are to cover up your bad playing.... I always wondered why they existed... lol.
So you are one of these clean channel only purists?
Get a better guitar player to demo !!
