Any chance you guys consider maybe lowering the volume of the intro/outro? It's kinda annoying.
@Dahn that can be sarcasm and recently Spider-Man game only let us down moderately
Why is there a censor/black circle on the no straight roads picture?
"I hate your game." Damn Yahtzee didn't even sugar coat it. Top 5 worst is going to be an interesting list this year
Top 5 Best might be renamed "1 game I actually liked and 4 that didn't make me want to commit violent acts on myself"
bird3713 so spiritfarer then?
@@bird3713 2020 had some good games actually.
@@od4361 I think most gamers would say so, but Spiritfarer seems to be the only game that Yahtzee had a positive review on.
@@bird3713
You also have Doom Eternal.
I think NSR looks like a hybrid of the Double Fine games with the early Gorillaz designs
It reminds me of Scott Pilgrim for some reason
I think it looks a whole lot like DieBuster, specially the ending theme. But no one watched that anime.
so, a double fine game?
Now I wanna draw that lol. Murdoc ans Zuke! Eewaa

Moments when yahtzee halts the swearing and hyperbole to just lay out his true feelings on a game are always the best
Radical Raddish True, but the contrast is what gives those moments their impact, so let‘s keep him swearing most of the time.
Thank you for making me even more excited to see this video.
@Duckie_Plays not if EA has anything to say about it!!!!
certainly momentous, but I'd say the writing behind the clever twists of phrase and the signature metaphors takes the cake
I enjoyed the fast paced throwaway glee of battletoads as semi-ironic nostalgia. Not your thing, but I'm 100% onboard that their collision needed work, the only realistic way to fight is a lot of tongue juggling... I'm sure there's another semi-ironic oral sex joke in there somewhere.
NSR has the heart most AAA games have been missing for years, so even if it is a bit jank, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT.
I love the "Monks" reference at 4:09.
Well, at least No Straight Roads got the “I want to like you, but your gameplay isn’t good.” ...Certainly STILL did a lot better then Yatzee just absolutely stomping on battletoads, grinding it into a sand belt, and then pouring gasoline on it before flicking a cigarette on it.
@Simple Weirdo Yep, it gets a C+ gameplay but an A+ in Music, Characters, Story, Visual and Details. I love it and will definitely by a sequel.
1:01 I actually loved Biker Mice from Mars growing up.
The mouse on the bike saying 'brum brum' is my favourite part of this, and I don't care who knows it. Shit creased me up.
Ha. Axe to grind. Top notch double entendre there
Oh man i loved Biker Mice from Mars and also Street Sharks!
Biker Mice from Mars was a solid cartoon!
Biker Mice From Mars...F YES that was a thing.
No Straight Roads is the worst playing game that I _want_ to keep playing in spite of it because everything feels so...earnest? I can't really articulate it but the game feels like it was made with love, not nescesarily skill.
And in a world where Tripple A games can shit out Hulk suddenly channelling a text to speech program and have subtitles that describe actions better than the animators could, that makes all the difference in the world.
...Second boss is a bit of a bitch to fight since there's _so_ many things to react to at once. And actually having checkpoints here and there during the bossfights would be nice.
I agree. It was made by a small indie Malaysian team, they had no reason to be greedy, and didn't have the resources to refine the game as well as AAA titles. Unfortunately it's not the charming kind of jank, but I hope the game does well. I hope they get enough money to make more games and learn from what few mistakes there were with NSR.
If they manage to overcome those technical problems, they're going to make amazing games. I just know it.
I have such mixed feelings on it. Like, I really want to like it more than I do, and I like what they were going for, but the execution was just...not great. It's playable, but has a lot of bugs and IIRC there are some levels where it is just about impossible to get an S rank on Crazy difficulty in single player due to the way the game was made. And yet, I played the 1010 fight like 10 times, just for the heck of it, because it's still sort-of good.
I wouldn't reccommend it to anyone at it's current price point, but if it were like $20, I'd probably give a lot more praise.
So basically they tried their hardest but it was still not enough?
@@sethleoric2598 Seems like it. From an update video I saw, the director explained that they're mostly made of new talent, and recent graduates. He didn't want to use it as an excuse, but it does explain the lack of technical polish.
well one patch for the bugs has been put out already
Biker mice from Mars was epic tho
His review of battletoads is so obviously objectively wrong
Amphibians don’t even HAVE external testicles
Ladies and gentlemen, we got him.
The second he dissed Biker Mice From Mars he lost his hill to stand on.
SATIRE!
He could be right or wrong...even now!!
That’s how hard your grinding into the
Ground my friend.
I just love the dialogue in NSR. Its all so lively and full of character to suit the sick beats. DJSS is probably my favourite if the bunch, he wears that DJ stereotype swimmingly and has great lines both in English and Japanese
It's definitely my favorite game now, and I listen to all the songs online daily
His ego is so massive that collapses in on thatself like a black hole.
"I reserve my trivia-remembering brain for Red Dwarf quotes"
Too smegging right
Smeeeg Heeed
I've never even heard of that show until this video.
I'm fine thankyou Susan.
It has been so long since I have watched red dwarf I had trouble remembering a quote to change up and post.
So, what is it?
“Hello, GameStop? Do you have BattleToads: 9000 Mudkips Edition?”
I genuinely paused the video to try to read the "Gru's plan" meme at 3:54, but all I could make out is that the first panel starts with "Load up", the second panel says "shoot up federal building", and the last two start with "Get head".
Biker Mice from Mars was fucking legit.
Red Dwarf, the deep cut
You know at least Shows like Harley Quinn isn't ashamed to be a animated comic book show unlike a lot of DC live movies that are so insecure about their origins they have to pepper in a flurry of swears and bodies to seem mature.
Yeah, it just does comic booky stuff WHILE peppering in needless swears and violence.
@@GargusSCP its an R rated comedy. It's tone at least fits with Harley quinn.
Swearing aside it’s funny and joyously messy.
This episode was surprisingly dark, between the mass shootings and the allusion to musician suicides via shotgun...
I like the subtle 'axe to grind' double meaning.
cowboys of moo mesa...this was also a thing...
Sure i remember biker mice from mars and street sharks lol
Not likely that Yahtzee will even see this but I do wonder: did he ever play the arcade version of Battle Toads?
sometimes I wonder whether NSR would have worked better as an anime or something... like seriously the soundtrack SLAPS
What I’m curious about is why there only three battles toads instead of four like the original
"I'm trying not to swear here"
3 seconds late
"Big ass"
"Fucking"
"You know perfectly well you're not going to buy anything from, but you've got a few minutes to kill before the nuke hits"
lol...?
I wonder if Yahtzee will review Hylics 2. The indie market this year has some interesting stuff.
The lady Gaga cameo is my example when people ask why the Simpson’s are bad
"Dear creators of Battletoads: I hate your game SOOO MUCH that I'm going to put a DIFFERENT game in this video to praise while you watch."
Please tell me that outro was a dig at Cane Toads!
I am glad he really liked NSR’s earnest charm, and I do agree with his sentiment with the gameplay.
"Memes and mass shootings" after 8 years of consuming your content you have finally broken me with a statement.
My only gripe with NSR is that it looks great stylistically, but is not the smoothest game to play. I have the Switch version and it feels like it's the most janky. Fell through the floor during Sayu, the note projectiles stayed glitched on the ground a few times and I couldn't pick them up. Overall it's pretty hard to play it efficiently during harder difficulties on bosses which really sucks
Hey. Biker Mice from Mars was and still is a great show!
The Kurt Cobain joke in the credits 😂
All sidescroller games now are 4 player games...Wart, now 4 players.
We need a biker mice from Mars game hahha
4:43 I actually have a sandwich bag full of used tissues and I can assure you it's far more engaging than Battletoads.
I have yet to finish No Straight Roads because the final boss fight keeps resetting itself for no reason.
love your videos but at the start of every one I have to turn the volume way down quick then skip the song then turn it back up so I can hear you talk.
That ricocheting marble tea Tray Line actually made me pleasantly chuckle.
Thank you Yahtzee
But did it have the rockin pause screen music?
1:20 i laughed at that.
Okay, I had heard that he was pretty harsh on Battletoads, but...
That blunt as fuck "I hate your game". I genuinely felt like I got punched in the chest for a moment😆
wait isn't no straight roads just trolls world tour, the game
No it's way deeper and funnier
Ooh that second-to-last credits joke got me
I worked on the Tex Murphy game Tesla Effect, and yes we did watch your review with interest. And we *were* surprised at the relatively good tone, and to have even landed on your radar. Kinda joyous actually. :D Hopefully we left a good impression overall. It was a game out of its time and we reveled in that.
Considering how well-received NSR has been in spite of its gameplay (art style, complex characters, story where neither side is the bad guy, critical commentary on the dark sides of popular musical genres like K-Pop), it's hard to tell if Yahtzee tolerates it or hates it as much as Battletoads.
He doesn't dislike it. He just doesn't like the gameplay but everything else is solid
@@balanced2482 Alright, that makes sense.
I am a bit relieved. I was worried that (aside from the dreck gameplay) he hated it.
NSR did feel like a bit of a disappointment, because the premise of fighting Music themed boss fights with their own forms of attacking to the beat was a good idea, it's just a shame the actual combat felt lacking in a way, banging soundtrack though.
The Harley Quinn series is legitimately good though
That Italy shot had me rolling! Well done sir! >=)
Biker Mice from Mars was great, mate.
Mmm yes, red dwarf references
The battletoads one doesn't suprise me too much. The original was both unforgiving and kinda really shit if attempted 2 player, whilst the reboot looks like it should belong on Newgrounds.
Honestly it usually takes a lot for me to dislike a game. I might be iffy or cautious about it, but the moment I saw gameplay of it in the background of one of Jim Sterling's videos I went " don't need to check that" instantly.
"Besides the fact that they rhyme"
It aaaall becomes clear
Harley Quinn is probably not the best example of a Rick and Morty clone.
Ugh. Now I have to remember piss like Samurai Pizza Cats.
Or Street Sharks.
"Jawsome".
Fun fact: the reason Battletoads feels like it's written to try and be like Rick & Morty is because the lead writer really did work on Rick & Morty.
Then shouldn't it be like, funny?
@@rougheredge6705 Forgive me for saying this, but some of us say that about _Rick & Morty_ .
@@wandererwerewolf477 How dare you! Rick & Morty is funny... at times... subjectively. I guess I kind of see it as more of an interesting experience than a "laugh your something-or-other off" show, granted, but yeah.
Every writer is fallible, though, especially if they get a bit burnt out and/or overconfident.
@@wandererwerewolf477 There's no accounting for taste of course, but even if you don't like Rick and Morty it clearly has something that the writing in Battletoads doesn't recreate, even if that's something you don't like.
Think of it this way, if you ALREADY don't like Rick and Morty then I can't imagine how grating a worse version of Rick and Morty would be to you.
@@rougheredge6705 Exactly. Plus, tbh, I was never a fan of Battletoads even when it was new.
"You'd think the actual weapon of choice for an indie rock musician would be a double barreled shotgun"

"wake up in the future to find themselves forgotten has-beens" well at least Battletoads' developers understand their situation
So far Battletoads looks to be the clear front-runner for Yahtzee's Worst Game of 2020.
I'm betting on the Blandest list, personally.
@@seamusburke639 no, i can't see it going anywhere but the hated list. i'll tip on avengers for blandest.

The Last Of Us Part 2: Yay! We're safe!
Future: Yeah, about that.
God that “I hate your game” is so serious.
Kinda gave me chills for a sec and it wasn't even aimed at me >.>
I was hoping the new Battletoads would look more like Streets of Rage 4, not Teen Titans Go. 😠
I suggest watching and reading other reviews.
Meh it’s more like the tmnt reboot on Nickelodeon
It is Teen Titans Go, because the original battletoads the jokes were in the gameplay itself. Everything was limited back in the time so they were extremely creative about the game. This game entirely missed the point, it's trying to be a Saturday morning cartoon with some gameplay bits thrown in with100 of jokes a second and hoping one lands and then they put in the battletoads game part.
Just when I thought he was getting soft
"Now that the kids these days express their feelings with memes and mass shootings"
Bruh
hey, its the real Justin Y, haven't seen you in a long time.
When the ZP 2020 compilation arrives next year that Mass Shooting line will more than likely be edited out.
Justin, why do i see you everywhere recently
On a more serious note, I find it highly ironic for Rock music to be the ones to portray themselves as the rebellious freedom fighters of music considering that Rock music was the mainstream juggernaut for over 50 years. There was outright hostility towards the emerging hip hop scene that help kill off disco. Until the 90’s and 2000’s the music scene became what this game presented; bloated, manipulative and self serving media empire that crushed anything that didn’t fit the desires of music labels.
Bruh indeed
Him simply saying: "I hate your game" is unexplainable in its rawness.
"Next week a game people actually care about". Are you referring to The Avengers? Because I don't know if I'd say all that lmao
Edit: I know it’s Avengers. That was a joke
I want to hear him whine about Iron Harvest.
Yep. The next one's the Avengers
Could also be Tony Hawk. People definitely care about that one...
Pascal Blank it was kind of a rhetorical question. Escapist confirmed in the comments last week that Avengers would be next. I just watched it an hour ago. It was nice
Post ZP stream shows it. It's Marvels Avengers alright.
how dare you insult biker mice from mars. they were to good for this world. if i could remember even one of there names i would... i would... SOMETHING BAD.. i can garuntee that.
"Pretty buggy game too actually, that, fellas, was where you needed to stop imitating Double Fine." Ouch.
No Straight Toads, Alex Jones' greatest nightmare
lol
Battleroads and No Straight Toads?
Combat for NSR is a bit off, but I still love the game. The characters, cutscenes, art style, and music is on point and really makes the game shine.
Conspiracy theory:
Battletoads was secretly developed by gamespot in response to the meme lords calling up and asking for battletoads. The hope being to develop such an awful game that no one would even want to ironically call up and ask for a copy
Honestly this is at least .01% feasible.
This and the Shaqfu reboot are really good reasons why you shouldn't take a meme too far. You end up getting really shitty games and it kills the meme dead (not that the meme was worth keeping alive but it wasn't worth killing in such a permanent and brutal way).
The only flaw with that is that battletoads is actually a really fun game with flowing and fun combat... and perfectly feels like a battletoads game. This is the furthest off base I've ever seen yahtzee be
Ah yes, No Straight Toads
Fallout76 will commence again if you try and take our firearms.
Having worked on a game Yahtzee reviewed in 2012, I can tell you that developers do watch him reviews when they come out.
Yeah the NSR review was 100% exactly what I expected, I love the game but it needed more time in the oven.
I've been Playing it this month easily my favorite game. C+ on the actual gameplay straight +A's on the presentation, characters, Story, and music. I've been replaying and watching.
I feel that’s kinda what was gonna happen since it’s from amateurs and even if the gameplay needs work, they did good to even better than good on most of the other stuff that it kinda balances things out. Hopefully lessons were learned and if they’re able to put out more stuff, their gameplay is at a high a standard as their creative world and character concepts and writing.
That's fair, at least Battletoads is being faithful to the original game, and is actually playable unlike the original. Though the diaper joke was just bad, but honestly the game looked pretty fun, but it's not for everone.
The hate isn't even helping the franchises case. If this game doesn't even do remotely decently it's "game over" for the toads.
Plus the game isn't even as bad as most make it out to be, it's just basic and different for a sequel to a Traditional beat-em-up. Plus the hate towards the aesthetic is B.S. imo this series has always been a cartoon-esque concept. I thought the cutscenes were gold, kinda cheap sure but it's about as funny as this series ever got.
@@buzter8135 Yeah trying to break out of character was kinda...rude of him to be honest. Like it's not even like it's busted gameplay wise.
No straight Toads?
...anyone else hear alex jones for some reason?
I really want to like NSR, but I didn't like how it tried to "both sides" a tale about a small revolution against a dictatorship. It's a fine message when it is about music genres not being inherently good or bad, but it doesn't work with the story they were trying to tell.
If there's no weight or impact to the fighting then we can't actually consider this a battle toads game.
That's the thing, there IS. The animation in combat is fantastic. literally no idea what he's on about.
@@derekgettys1626 I can't vouch for how it plays but it does look pretty crisp.
That axe to grind joke was an amazing use of visual humour and a pun simultaneously well done
Your nickname was never "Ace." Maybe "Ace-hole"
I watched a few game play videos of NSR and all I could think was, "WOW, this game looks amazing and charming" and then I watched a bit more and thought "Ah... this game LOOKS amazing and charming... but it does not look like it would be fun to play". Glad to see at least Yahtzee agrees.
I enjoyed it, so its one ofthose "your mileage mya vary" things
It's buggy and imperfect but EXTREMELY fun to play. There's a reason why it managed to develop a small, yet extremely active fanbase in just a few weeks. It honestly reminds me of gaming back in the day, when something didn't have to be perfect with next gen graphics to still be *fun*.
From what I've seen, NSR could have been much better if they embraced the music aspect of the game. The idea of the enemies attacking in time to the music was neat, but sometimes the ost hid the beat or lost it entirely. Not to mention the fact that the PLAYER had no such compunction. You could swing that guitar all you liked, and that didn't feel right to me.
SnivyTries Well, maybe that's the games real view on rock-music. Just hit that guitar however you like, the resulting din is rock. ;-)
It’s... it’s trying very, very hard, and I appreciate 75% of what it did.
Not gonna lie though, No Straight Roads is probably my favorite game of the generation. (not the best game, but my favorite). haven't had a pure fun game like that since the 08-12 era of games. Reminds me of games like Lollipop Chainsaw and Asura's Wrath where the amazing presentation makes up for the shoddy basic gameplay.
I've been Playing it this month easily my favorite game. C+ on the actual gameplay straight +A's on the presentation, characters, Story, and music. I've been replaying and watching.
well anything with the name "lolipop chainsaw" seems worth checking out
Yahtzee’s review of NSR was the most most positive one I’ve ever heard so far in his videos.

Wait until you see his review of Undertale.
Battletoads (2020) is that painful kind of soft reboot where the developers constantly shit on the fanbase that made the franchise popular to begin with. I'm not even a fan of Battletoads, but I *despise* that hateful attitude that has permeated throughout the industry. The animation is fluid, but its just an excuse to be lazy so the animators don't have to be consistent. People *REALLY* need to stop this obsession over animation that ignores the quality of everything else. The Dark Queen looks like a forgettable villain for a shitty PBS Kids show and the reason for her redesign is once again the result of people who have no love for the franchise. They were just given the IP and decided to strip it of it's identity so they could crank out another soulless reboot w/ Rick & Morty brand of comedy. The writing is atrocious, the gameplay is forgettable, and this simply isn't fun whatsoever. Battletoads (2020) can burn in Hell.
Words cannot express how ugly I think that artstyle is; I don't even really know why, but it just looks so bad to me. Each character looks awful, with The Dark Queen's blandness somehow being better than just how bad the other characters look. There's also like an hour of cutscenes in a three hour game and that alone is fairly concerning.
@@macmcskullface1004 The new dark queen looks bland and terrible, though the latter is mostly due to the artstyle, everyone looks terrible, but her actual design is just not good. I have little attachment to the old one but it's clearly better than the new one.
@@macmcskullface1004 Except they still worked in Shovel Knight, another game with a better woman antagonist. & it was in 8 bit, so you don't even have the Tifa or artstyle excuses.
Be honest, if it went for an artstyle that supported the dark queens classic design you'd be against it.
@@macmcskullface1004 Funny, for someone who doesn't care you seem awfully hurt by that comment.
If you prefer this art style that's fine, I just wanted to know ahead if you do to save time.

I had comic books and action figures for them. As well as fond memories. I think biker mice from mars was pretty prevalent just not for very long which is a damn shame
