There's a reason why people into actual BDSM laugh at the franchise. I mean apart from it confusing some essential tenets to that subculture (No time to spell it out here look it up) But the main reason is that what happens in this story is JUST FUCKING BORING. The books aren't about "freaky shit" They're about what some sex starved middle aged person who's never experienced wild sex THINKS freaky shit is supposed to be.

I saw this today, my friend paid for me because I refused to see it otherwise. I usually have a strict 'no phone' policy in theaters, it gets turned on silent and in my purse always. I was on my phone the entire time with this stupid, terrible, damaging movie, bitching about it the whole time. Women were 'aww'ing at scenes that were creepy and gross (his "romantic" lines) and CRYING during the "missing Christian" thing, and that pissed me off because it's done so sloppily! When I saw the first one, I was able to play the drinking game to it, and that made it so much better. Seeing this sober was like being waterboarded.
And, I'm a fan of toxic (fictional) relationships like Harley and the Joker, but those don't PRETEND to be anything other than screwed up! This series pretends that this abusive relationship is LOVE and it's not. Just like it's shitty portrayal of BDSM- I'm not in the community but I do understand it.
And honestly, I wasn't impressed with the sex scenes in any way. If I want kinky sex scenes, I'll go watch porn and get much hotter and harder kinks.
This is one of the funniest reviews ever done by the Double toasted crew.

I've got tix to see both John Wick 2 and the Lego Batman Movie this weekend. Hopefully those two films do well enough to have this 50 Shades BS debut in 3rd place.
The leads of 50 Shades have ZERO chemistry on screen, and off screen it is no better. They looked absolutely awkward together when promoting the first film. Dakota is not believable as her character. She's totally plain looking and i can't see Christian Grey or anyone else fighting over her.
Lego Batman and John Wick are going to murder this film at the box office.

The sex scenes probably went all the way in the book because I mean this is basically fanfic. but I never read it so idk. Cinema is usually much more conservative so I can imagine they scaled it back.

i agree. all i know is i love the train wreck that is this series. if this is gonna be a movie, if this fanfiction *horrible i might add* is getting recognition, then i have to watch the reviews. i just love a good train wreck. from what i know, this series became the guilty pleasure in the reading community as well as most people's favorite series to hate and this only got worse when it was announced years later that it would get a movie. i was just as surprised as the majority with this one, that this thing was getting a movie. i hated 50 shades but since they're going to film the whole series i guess i've just gotten to a point where i'm like alright, fine. i will watch the reviews. *i'm not reading or watching the books/movies. nope not ever. i love fanfiction but i do not enjoy characters like anastasia nor do i like characters like her boyfriend whatever his name is. i also just wasn't a fan of the twilight series and this has been confirmed to be twilight fanfiction. besides, bdsm is just creepy.*
I have read fan fiction worse than 50 Shades. Trust me. I've edited fan fiction. As it is, 50 Shades is pretty bad, plotwise. If anyone behaved like a normal person, the whole premise of the book would be over in an instant. There are major issues with suspension of disbelief. I can get Ana being initially fascinated by Christian, but most people would have noped out of his apartment the instant they found out what he was into. Nope, nope, nope. And how can he dispose of her car without her permission? We could also go into factual errors. James was very meticulous about mentioning dates in her story, yet seems unaware of major US holidays. Most businesses are closed on Memorial Day, yet she has Ana [my memory is a little vague here] either going in for her interview or starting her first day at work at the publisher on Memorial Day. The funniest bit of all was in the third book -- the bank scene. I work in banking, and --- trust me -- no banker would ever act in such a way. Plus, most banks don't have that much loose cash about to give away without advance notice. James has some tantalizing glimpses of interesting ideas -- for instance intimacy for someone who does not like to be touched -- but she only scratches the surface, and throws in glider rides, helicopter crashes, and car chases when she runs out of stuff to write about. It's the -- everything and the kitchen sink -- approach to writing. It was entertaining enough to be accidently humorous in a trainwrecky sort of way. But I have read far worse stuff -- it does exist, and there is a lot of it. [I will never forget the Doctor Who fan fic that was a 12 or so page run-on sentence, displaying a general lack of knowledge about the television program. It was unreadable.]
