The Secret Murals of the Lukhang Temple photos by Chögyal Namkhai Norbu - with curator Jakob Winkler

In 1981 Professor Namkhai Norbu, returning to Lhasa after more than 20 years, made the first photographs of what were then considered the most secret images of Tibet, the 18th-century murals of the Lukhang, a small temple located behind the Potala Palace which contains what has become known as the Sistine Chapel of Tibetan Buddhism. An esoteric wunderkammer, the images of the Lukhang present a panorama of Tibetan culture in the 1700s and an authentic visual guide to enlightenment. The exhibition brings together a selection from the over 100 photographs made by Prof. Namkhai, luminous reflections, that Rinpoche captured, fleeting moments that represent all that remains of some of the murals of the Lukhang, treasures now lost.

Nel 1981 il professor Namkhai Norbu, tornato a Lhasa dopo oltre 20 anni, scattò le
prime fotografie di quelle che allora erano considerate le opere più segrete del Tibet, i
dipinti murali del XVIII secolo del Lukhang, un piccolo tempio situato dietro il Palazzo
del Potala che contiene ciò che è diventato noto come la Cappella Sistina del buddismo
tibetano. Esoterica meraviglia, le immagini del Lukhang rappresentano una panoramica
della cultura tibetana del 1700 e un'autentica guida visiva all'illuminazione.
La mostra raccoglie una selezione delle oltre 100 fotografie realizzate dal Prof.
Namkhai, scorci momentanei, riflessi luminosi che Rinpoche ha catturato, attimi fuggenti
che rappresentano tutto ciò che resta di alcuni dei dipinti murali del Lukhang, tesori
ormai perduti.
