- The still life is more than just fruit and pretty flowers. Beginning with ancient Egypt, this program will explain some of the symbolism found in still lifes, including the memento mori and vanitas themes.
Nice job Susan! I enjoyed the history lesson.
I love your videos! Concise and you portray the information in a way that's easy to understand, which i really appreciate. I feel like im understanding and retaining more than I did from full history lectures in art school honestly!
I appreciate that!
This was incredibly helpful, thank you Doctor Susan.
You are most welcome. Thank you for watching!!!
Thank you for making this.
Could you please send me the subtitles file so i can make one for greek?
Very informative....
Thank you! I appreciate hearing from you.
Very informative video, but what about still life up to the 21st century?
Well...it goes on much the same. Maybe one day I will continue this narrative with another video. So much to discuss! Thanks for your comment and for watching my production.
But why was there Crhistian turmoil about the famous vanitas still life's if the message was a truly moral christian message? Why did they step away from painting skulls for instance?
I do not know of any real Christian turmoil over still lifes with skulls except that modern Christians tend not to like things that deal with anything "unpleasant" or otherworldly (e.g, ghosts). Still lifes with skulls are still being painted. But since most modern people (except for those who watch my videos!) know very little about symbolism in art, the meaning of the skulls goes right over their heads. And...in case you think I am anti-Christian. I am not. My father was actually an Episcopal rector. I learned about this from an expert!
What is still life meaning
A still life is a composition in which the subject matter is made up of objects that do not move. For example, flowers, sea shells, vases.
