My grandmother made your version except she added chopped prunes. She served it stuffed in baked breakfast rolls or over oatmeal. I never knew it contain alcohol, I just knew it made me happy whenever she gave it to us.
My husband likes mince pie and I've tried several brands of filling and he just doesn't like them. I made a pie using your mincemeat recipe and he loved it. Will definitely be making this again.
I have made this recipe third time, yesterday. I replaced the alcohol with the apple juice and refrigerated the mincemeat after cooling. The recipe is awesome and so is the taste of the mincemeat. I always make it sans alcohol and every time it tastes great. I would be using it to bake mincemeat cake, tarts etc and share it with my friends and neighbors.
Every year we make mincemeat cobbler for the holidays and mincemeat cookies. Decided this year to make my own with my daughter who helps with the baking. Decided to simmer it in a crockpot, doubled the recipe but instead of four apples, used two granny smith's, two pears and two quince, along with the two raisins, prunes, dates, figs and candied cherries. So far, got to say this is the best, and a great bonding experience.
I talked about this in the Homemade Mincemeat headnote "In the beginning Mincemeat was made with meat (hence the name), along with eggs, dried fruits and spices. Over time, beef suet (kidney fat) came to replace the meat and the eggs were dropped completely from the recipe." Today's mincemeat is made with or without the beef suet.
#Seriously, I see no reason why anyone would feel guilty using alcohol because the moment alcohol is listed in a recipe, it becomes an ingredient and not a substance. Even when the mincemeat is sitting in the fridge, the alcohol continues to cook the fruits. Mincemeat can stay on the shelve for years with that alcohol preserving it in a nice sealed jar like she used. It's not like you are boozing, just because there's alcohol in it. A lot of restaurants cook with wine all the time; it's the flavor and ability to break down the meats of the fruits, to develop their full flavor that we are after in the entire mince meat recipe. My mom kept mince meat for over a year. It gets richer, thicker and flavorful with age. The alcohol is essential to the recipe because it acted as a preservative when there were no fridges. It is also the only ingredient that gives it that richness in color, as well as that certain distinct burst of flavor. The pilgrims brought it over to the US from England, where mince pie is enjoyed all year round at tea time. In Great Britain mince meat is a pantry essential. I wrote a lot didn't I...Well that's because I am an Author...I love writing. Thank you for all your hard work My Lady #Joyofbaking ...You got a.new subbie here.
I see what you mean. But I am sure you have mince in grocery stores year round. In the US it is a seasonal item and very inconvenient. My parents were born and raised during British colonization of the Gold Coast.. I think they practiced the old ways of having mince all the time from that era because that's what they learned from the English and taught me, but they are long dead. So yes that was a long time ago. Times have changed.
I found your recipe this year. So easy, I never done it before thinking it was a lots of work. I made it twice. It's a hit with my husband and was also at a bake bazar here in Mexico.
The funniest thing happened: today I was searching this recipe in your channel ...and it was the video of the day!! Thanks so much for your vids, love this one. Ive learnt so much with you. You are a class lady.
I looked through a lot of mincemeat recipes when trying to find one to make for Christmas, and I think yours is the best. I especially like the variety of ingredients and I like that I can make it at the last minute rather than weeks in advance.
Mince pies we’re originally meat but because of meat shortages in World War Two, fruit and nuts were used instead , mainly because they were a cheap alternative . You can still make them the old way , your choice , this is a great recipe
This is a nice recipe for those who do not want the beef suet in the pie. the brandy highlights the flavors. For those who cannot handle the brandy and rum, you should stay away, although the baking would reduce some of the alcohol.
I really want to make homemade mincemeat! This looks great! I am actually going to add meat to it, as the original British recipes did. But I love your fix! Just pour in a little bit more Brandy LOL!
I made your mincemeat last wk end and have been feeding it with a little Brandy every couple of days!!..First time that I have ever made my own.I just want to say a big thanks. It is delicious.I will be making the pies tomorrow.A little ground Almond in the pastry mix..heaven.I wish you a very Happy Christmas, and all the best for the coming year.
Ps. To make it vegan the butter can be replaced with coconut oil…same for pastry (although it is harder to rub in by hand, a food processor would make it easier)
I just made this receipe, it is delicious! Thank you so much. I llive in Shanghai and mince pies are expensive so I decided to make my own. Merry Christmas 🎄🎄🎄
Thanks ... just made a batch. You’re very easy to follow .... I will follow your pastry recipe tomorrow. I have used your other recipes and they all turned out really good. Merry Christmas to you!!
I always thought mince meat was a meat pie. I've never had and my family never made it. Learned something new. I may try it out see what my kiddos think. Thanks Stephanie. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
Thank you for this recipe. My husband is allergic to alcohol so I do know I can use fruit juice in cooking instead, but I also prefer to cook the mincemeat down to get a nicely melded mixture and to ensure food safety due to being health compromised. And, I'm originally from England so I know about suet but have never noticed it for sale where I live, so a vegetarian version is just fine with me too. 😊 I've saved this one, and looking forward to giving it a go! 👍🇨🇦
i was JUST! watching laurainthekitchens new video! "mini mince pies" an i was thinking i you made one couse you give all the european mesuermeants! and then you upload it! the christmas magic is upon us!
No Brandy...no problem; apple cider vinegar and soy sauce... problem solved! Has discussed in this video the alcohol bakes off and the flavor is what remains (outside some in the rehydrated fruit). I find that soy sauce has been a wonderful emergency replacement for vanilla extract, expreso, and other forms of "dark bitters", this recipe shouldn't (and wasn't) any different. To replace the fruity notes or flavors found within the Brandy was substituted with the fruity notes in apple cider vinegar. Thought I would share this recipe hack!
Hi Joy happy holiday is it possible we can cut back on the sugar can’t have the sugar some of us diabetics have to moderate our sugar intake. Love the ❤️ treats
I only found out from your comment and video, so you're not alone haha. I'm living in England now, and I have been passing up homemade mince meat pies just because I thought they were meat pies haha. I won't make that mistake again.

instead of butter, I bet you could use beef fat (suet) or Lard (pig fat) instead ! I know that lard is high in saturated fat, which is good and no trans fat, which is good also! cheap, which is good too! and available in small amounts at the grocery store!
I use to eat this pie when I was young, but with a family of my own, no one would eat it with the Suet. The original mincemeat was made with the suet cooked down, but for those that don't like suet, you can substitute butter.
Traditionally suet was used because it has a very high melting point and adds texture to the finished product. Neither lard nor butter will give the same effect - they will just make it oily, which misses the point. I always render my own suet and use it in Xmas recipes.
Do you think it would keep in sterilised jars? I was looking at another recipe which had no suet and included alcohol, and they kept it up to a year. I would like to make mine in October to use in December.
If you want to store it longer than a week, you need to stir in more alcohol. So I normally stir it twice a week and if it looks a little dry, then I stir in some alcohol.

of course everybody is making / baking this! .. is a must for the season. Mincemeat pie is a Christmas recipe (with or without meat) in any BBC food recipe list you'll find they include meat (or at least in many of the recipes).
Wonderful lesson in a traditional Mincemeat recipe but it’s not an Old English Mincemeat recipe. For instance here in the U.K. and Ireland we never use figs or cranberries and apart from the suet which is always used and you can now buy vegan and vegetarian versions of suet. Also all homemade mincemeat is prepared traditionally at the start of November. To start with all the dried fruits are soaked in alcohol for at least 48 hours in the fridge to enlarge the fruits to absorb all the liquid. Then when you are ready to prepare, add all the ingredients together in a very large pan over a very low flame, low enough just to melt the suet. After an hour or so transfer mincemeat into airtight containers store in the pantry or your fridge till it’s needed. Mincemeat is traditionally made for pies, flans, roulades or any other recipe you want. Mincemeat is used throughout the month of December, they generally are passed around to Carol singers with Mulled Wine or for a cup of tea late afternoon on Christmas Day or Christmas cake before the Christmas night buffet is served around 9pm.

You can use it to make Mince Pies, a Mincemeat Tart, or the Mincemeat Cake,

Yes, you can use dried mango.

Do you sterilise your jars first before putting your mincemeat In? Valerie
I don’t because I store it in the fridge, for just a few weeks. For longer storage you would have to sterilize the jars.
a minced pie, is a small British sweet pie traditionally served during the Christmas season. it's delicious ;)
Is it necessary to add alcohol in this recipe could I use alternative.?
Thanking for sharing this video
I've never tried it, but you could leave out the alcohol. If it is too thick you could add some apple juice.
sorry, stephanie, I mentioned on your mincemeat tarts. I will try your mincemeat for christmas
Oh my. It's been long time since I've had mincemeat pie...memories of my late mother. Thank you
i liked this
Yes! Totally true
Stephanie, if I wanted to use the beef suet how much would I use? Thanks.
I'm sorry, but I've never made mincemeat with beef suet, so I don't know how much you would use.
If I wanted to add meat to this how much should I add. Also can I leave out the candied peal and cherries?
Jennifer Butt I've made this recipe many times and have never used the candied peel. Turns out great.

Why is it called mince meat although there is no meat in it?
In the beginning Mincemeat was made with meat (hence the name), along with eggs, dried fruits and spices. Yes, this is a vegetarian (or faux) mincemeat. While not exactly the same flavor as mincemeat made with beef suet, it’s pretty good.
