  • In this Portugalist webinar, Sandra Gomes Pinto explains Portuguese nationality law and the different routes to obtaining Portuguese citizenship.
We discuss the most popular routes to becoming a Portuguese citizen such as:
    * Through naturalisation (by living in Portugal).
    * Through a parent or grandparent.
    * Through marriage or a defacto union.
Sandra answers lots of questions from Portugalist readers such as whether there are any downsides to obtaining Portuguese nationality, whether there are any tax obligations, and whether it's quicker to apply for citizenship or apply for a residency visa (if your main goal is to move to Portugal).
We also discuss that although a Portuguese passport allows you to live anywhere in the EU, more and more people from the rest of the EU are choosing to move to Portugal.

Thanks for the fantastic video! I've submitted my citizenship application through my Portuguese father. Since he didn't register me in Portugal before I turned 18, my application is expected to take 24+ months instead of the usual 3-4 months. It's been 1.5 years since a Portuguese solicitor handled my submission, but it's still at step 1, indicating significant delays for this process.

I'm about a year in since I submitted my paperwork. I just recently went from step 1 to step 2. It will be interesting to see if the process now speeds up for the remaining steps. Good luck to you.

Thanks for sharing. It's helpful for other people to know how long the process currently takes.

Thank you for this video. Even though I started the process a year ago, as Sandra says, the requirements are in constant change and it's nice to get an update.

On D7 visa, how much time is taken to receive a Portuguese passaporte after completing 5 years on D7 residency permit.

As Sandra mentions in the video, the typical time is around 2 years. You can apply after 5 years of residency in Portugal.
