I really enjoyed this particular “What I Saw” wrap up. It was a delight to see you review Aliens with such joy and reverence. This was also a great example of how you go to great lengths to try to give a movie a fair review. And that was your review for Alien 3. After recounting all the tinkering they did to try to make it watchable, you still honestly said you did not care for it. But that allows people to think about whether or not to watch it. Most reviewers would just destroy the movie and then move on. I wanted to take a minute and applaud your incredibly honest and truly sincere form of criticism. Always a treat to watch you. Thanks.

Thank you! I try my best to give every film a fair shot, and I think it's important to acknowledge something's good qualities even when it's not for me. Considering how I expected to feel about Alien 3, I was glad to find a few things about it that I liked.

Good job! I watched this while eating lunch. I agree about how it would be nice for Sigourney to re-visit the role. But you're also right that the ship has already sailed on that. Keep it up!

    Hello,
Yes, I did see on UA-cam that they have a Godzilla 24/7 live stream. Those live streams have been around for quite a few months though. I started watching one of the films but quickly backed out of it when those ads started showing up. 😂 So, I have not revisited those selections. Basically, very spoiled with watching a movie on DVD/BLU-RAY without commercials/ads. Thank you for mentioning that Godzilla live stream 24/7 selection.
I did watch your "Son of Godzilla" review. I do remember you mentioning Minira is a turn off for you to look at. Also, if I'm not mistaken, it's not one of your favorite G films. However, you mention on this video about the ending of the film. How touching it is. Yes, it is. "Son" is my #2 favorite G movie ever made. Your review did not upset me. Please, I don't mean to tell you what to do but try giving "Son" another watch. Perhaps you may feel differently? Yes, I am one of those G fans who like the 2 Jun Fukuda G films from the 60's. Not a lot of people who are G fans that I have spoken to like this film. It would take me too long to explain why I like it so much.
I did start watching Alien 3 a few months ago. Like yourself, I was not enjoying it. At least you made it through to the end. I did not. 😂Thank you for your review.

Hi, JW. I hope you and your family had a great Thanksgiving.
It's not particularly relevant, but I always enjoy seeing movie posters from older films, so thank you for showing them. Most of them are not great pieces of art, but they're often more fun that the bland posters of today. And it is nice to see that Godzilla films are fairly easy to access these days, at least the ones from the Showa era. Lastly, the Unification film was a real treat, and I'm glad William Shatner got to be involved as Kirk one more time. It brought a big smile to my face.
Thanks. Keep up the good work

A great review of these things, by the way I loved the two Godzilla toys on the bookshelf behind you in this.
'The Assembly Cut' is by far the best version of 'Alien 3', I've come to like it a lot as a film, but it's very differently paced, as you alluded to, than the previous or later Aliens films.
'The Face Behind The Mask' is an excellent film, which I've always loved since first seeing it, Peter Lorre gives such a great performance in the role, and the film is handled tastefully as you said.

I haven't watched any of the films here reviewed but The Face Behind the Mask and Alien and Aliens sound like great movies (each one in its own genre, of course 😅). Thanks for the link to The Face! Luckily, the whole Alien series is available on streaming in my country, so I'll make a priority for at least the first movie for next weekend, it's a more modern classic I have neglected for long enough 😊

Hey JW, hope you had a good holiday and ate plentifully! I will say that in regard to "Alien 3," I've always found the background for how messy its inception and production was to be more fascinating than the film itself (which I've come around to a tiiiiny bit more over the decades, but still don't care for overall). The fact that they started filming without a finished script blew my mind, which was primarily so they could meet a deadline set in stone by the movie's first teaser. If you are interested, there actually is an unpublished screenplay out there by writer William Gibson (Neuromancer) that would have continued the story proper after "Aliens," and would have seen all of the prior survivors live. There are downloads of it out there, and Dark Horse Comics even published a graphic novel adaptation of it a number of years ago. It's quite different, but I enjoy it overall!

Completely agree on Aliens and Alien 3. Aliens hits high marks as scifi, as an action film, as a character driven movie, and as a female led story that's both believable and an appropriate progression. Each character adds to the whole, even the minor charaters like Apone, Vasquez, Drake, and Pilot Ferro.

The image of Aliens you mentioned is great, I love it too. Especially in these days it just stands out so much. For that matter look at the cover of Eye of the Tiger from 1986 Starring Gary Busey. If you think about it, these images really portray what a hero is. They are protecting those who need to be protected and cared for.

JW, since you saw, The Face Behind the Mask, have you seen any of the Karloff films also made at Columbia at the same time? Several of them have a similar , very sad feeling, as Karloff was forever a decent (at least at first) doctor who either goes insane after his wife dies, or tries to help out a dying friend (putting part of the brain of a killer in their body to save their life) Before I Hang, 1940 and Black Friday, also 1940 (with an amazing performance from Stanley Ridges) are excellent examples.

Yes, this is something I loathe about some sequels; the callous killing off of good characters who have earned their happy endings, just to keep the franchise going. Hate it, hate it, hate it! And it happens a lot not only in film but in television series. We can never seem to just END something anymore; there's always the need to keep the story going, even if that story had a completely natural (and especially, happy) ending. For me, there's no reason to continue the Alien franchise beyond the second film, and nothing since has been worth it in terms of time and energy. Others differ, but that's OK. Anyway, thanks again and have a great week!

Great video. Informative and entertaining reviews.
If I might add my 2 cents...
    Regarding Alien 3 -
I think the opening (killing Newt and Hicks) sours the entire movie for most people.
I would have of course preferred that they not die, but for what it is, I think it's fine.
I think the fans of Aliens who are upset about Alien 3 ruining the possible happy ending of Aliens need to consider the following:
Aliens ruined the possible happy ending of Alien.
Ripley never gets home. And never sees her daughter again. In fact, her daughter is dead. And Ripley's life is essentially ruined.
I think it could be considered somewhat hypocritical of fans to get upset about Alien 3, while giving Aliens a pass.
    That being said...
    Yes, Alien 3 is flawed.
But I still think it's pretty good.
I think if I rank Aliens as best, 9.5 out of 10...
I'd rate Alien and Alien as mostly equal, 7 or 8 out of 10 each for different reasons.
Also, I think there are pros and cons of each version.
I think the Special edition is poorly paced. But I like spending more time with the lead characters.
And I think the Alien coming out of the Ox is more palatable, because I hate to see anything happen to dogs.
But I think the theatrical cut using the dog makes more sense narratively.
Because I think it makes more sense logistically for the face-hugger to have an opportunity to attack the dog. Plus the idea is that Xenomorphs take on aspects of their gestational hosts. And this Xeno moves like a dog.
    Anyway...
I'm glad you gave it another chance.
But I'm sad that you still didn't enjoy it.

I was wondering what you think of all these "Directors Cut" or "Deluxe Expanded Edition" they do quite often to get you to re-buy DVD's. I know you feel like I do about colorizing older vintage B/W movies. (UGH) Isn't this sort of like the same thing? I'm a purist and always prefer the original theatrical versions and don't like when they mess with them. Aliens and Alien 3 is a prime example. The only time I sort of liked it was the recent restoration of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. It needed it badly for obvious reasons.

    • @Weiselberry
      @Weiselberry  Місяць тому

I tend to be a purist too, and I definitely look askance at re-releases that bait fans with visual enhancements, bonus features, or collectible packaging. I guess I see this differently, at least in Aliens' case: the special edition is the same movie, just with material that Cameron felt needed to be there added back in. (Note: there are other deleted scenes that were not integrated.) I feel more wishy-washy about Alien 3's special edition because they did the thing you're talking about: releasing the film, then releasing the assembly cut, then releasing an *improved* version a few years later. If I were someone who'd gone for it the first time, I'd be miffed. I do appreciate having the choice, though. I was going to pick the theatrical version because I'd never seen it in its entirety, but my mom (who has seen it a few times) wanted to see the special edition while we had the opportunity.

Aliens was a fantastic follow up to Alien. I loved the change from horror to action... horror. Ripley lost her family and Aliens gave her the opportunity to build another. Michael Biehn had a very promising career before the alcohol took over. Alien 3 just destroyed the best things that came out of Aliens in 5 minutes. If I remember your previous review, you couldn't get screenshots for the review because of the xenos. The first two are some favorite films of mine, but the movies just didn't sit well with me after those.

If you're a film nerd then you've probably seen some of the behind-the-scenes documentaries about the making of Alien 3. It is 100% not David Fincher's fault and this is one of the biggest studio obstruction stories in Hollywood history. This movie went through so many writers and possible directors and had producers leaning on all of them to the point where this shambles of a movie ended up being made. I think Sigourney Weaver looks great with her head shaved but other than that I'll just give this movie a pass. I have seen it all the way through but it's been a long time and I have no plans to go back and see it again. It's a c minus at best.😢

Ms Weiselberry with a Xenomorph teddy? :0 next thing there’ll be snakes and dinosaurs! lol, A strange thing to say about a Xenomorph but it’s cute! If someone gifted that to you they were taking a risk haha. I’m going to blow your mind, well maybe not. If at some point you need to wash that XenoTeddy you may want to avoid a machine wash unless it’s a cold spin, what you may decide to do is wash it by hand, if this situation occurs you’d be giving that Xenomorph a bubble bath!!!!! ((✨🖐🏻😂🤚🏻✨))
It all comes back around, I’m so odd. I was given a teddy last month, it’s a little WW2 pilot teddy bear in a bomber jacket and an Aviator cap :D.
I’ve seen all of these films!!!!! I can’t really count it as a monthly what else I saw completion because it’s one month split into two videos and I’d only seen On Dangerous Ground from the last video although I’ve watched three more of those films since then. A Quiet Place : Day One. Someone’s Watching Me-Yikes! and Beach Red. I still want to see The Killer that Stalked New York. This does not count as a 100% but it maybe as close as I get, it’s always really just been a way for me to mention each film you discuss, you dedicate time to each film so I do my best to mention each one and having seen it or not always seemed like a decent way to do it. I’ll make an Oscar speech in honour of my non achievement for giggles.
I’d like to thank my mum for giving me a love of classic film and literature, I’d like to thank * you * for being the only other human being I’ve chatted with that has seen more films than I have and for always being kind and patient. I’d like to thank the Robot Monster for wearing a fish bowl on his head and I’d like to thank UA-cam, although it’s been a bit annoying lately. :/
I thought The Face Behind the Mask was good and Peter Lorre was excellent in it. Lorre was so deft at emoting his thoughts through subtle facial expressions and had an incredible ability to gain sympathy from an audience even if his character was terrible. He was a very good actor and I think his talent is often overlooked. There is a lot of the Phantom in the story and it could be what stoked my curiosity to see it. I was able to see The Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert Hall on a cinema screen last month, I’d seen it a few times on TV but it was released theatrically for a day to celebrate its anniversary and the day it was available happened to be my birthday :D It was like a sign for me to go or maybe a gift from above. :)
Aliens and Alien 3 : The Day the Music Died.
Aliens is my favourite of the franchise, I say franchise even though I only really consider it a franchise of two, Alien and Aliens. I feel the same way about the Terminator films, there’s just two. Aliens has everything going for it, a fantastic lead in Sigourney Weaver and a great supporting cast, action, thrills, scares and humour with some iconic set pieces. Alien 3 is like my UA-cam last week, ugh what is happening??? then maybe I’ll give it a chance because I’m sort of a little interested to know where it’s going but nope, I was wrong, it’s not working for me at all. I have the Alien collection and I’ve never re-watched Alien 3. It’s interesting how you were discussing the idea of the once planned Alien 3 reboot and how Sigourney Weaver felt it was now too late-765874 - Unification. Maybe it’s not too late 🤔
I think that new show Alien Earth will be available soon. Don’t know if I could commit to another show though, maybe I’ll watch the first episode. I still haven’t gotten around to Silo season 2.
    765874 - Unification.
I had posted a response to your reply about this short on your last video but thought maybe you’d mention the short film in your next video so I should delete and wait lol.
I’m glad you enjoyed it, I did too but no McCoy was an issue for me. There’s three in that friendship group not two, poor Bones is always overlooked. Spock entrusted McCoy with his Katra. I’d also like to have seen Kirk’s son David there, have him be the one to hand Kirk the badge because I think it would’ve meant more. David having had issues with Starfleet handing his dad the Starfleet badge would’ve been a powerful image for me, David and Kirk did resolve this issue in Wrath of Khan but I think it would’ve been a meaningful symbol, it seems like the gave this important moment to a random Kelvin alien that appeared in Discovery as a way of including the Kurtzman produced shows and films. There’s an earlier short where Spock goes to Kirk’s burial site and retrieves the badge that was left on top of the burial stones. I’d like to have seen Kirk’s brother and his family during the fountain scene too, a representation of his parents also because I’d look for my loved ones first but they’ll be waiting in the light so I can forgive it, though I would like to have seen them there. It was nice to see Robin Curtiss as Saavik again. There’s another clip of Curtiss as Saavik from Wrath of Khan era speaking dialogue and it looks like footage from an unreleased Trek film shot in the 80s :0 Apparently its another short or a full length film they’re making and it could include Kirk again and Spock.
The edit and timeline is confusing. We see a shot of Kirk’s body in a Starfleet containment unit, a quick Easter egg from Picard season 3, rumour has it he could be alive in a form of cryogenic sleep but it’s not certain. Yup a secret and apparently sinister organisation in Starfleet are gravediggers, ugh the new shows are so bad. We see Gary Mitchell who had become very powerful, did he bring them all together through time in the moments before Spocks death so Kirk and he could move forward together, maybe a gift to his old friend. Saavik would be living during this time so it would suggest someone with great abilities brought her there with her son, her son? The Spock and Saavik having a son is now canon? I’m happy for Spock but did he know? Was he there for his son and for Saavik? Were they together? I hope he wasn’t an absent father.
We see a new actress play Captain Pikes yeoman from The Cage in a clip and she’s apparently in future shorts so the character must be important, I think there’s a comic with her, Saavik, Kirk and Spock and that maybe what they’re adapting but I’m unsure. It was a bit confusing but full of warmth and love. It did make me cry. I missed Bones although maybe it’s fitting to his character to not appear, “ I’m a Doctor Jim not an AI deepfake mask on another actors body “

I know, haha, it's totally out-of-character for me. I came across it on Amazon and thought it kind of (shockingly) cute, and then I kept thinking about it. I showed it to someone who encouraged me to get it, and after much hemming and hawing, I went for it. It is a bit more xenomorphy in person than it looked online, so I do feel a bit funny toward it, but it'll be a fun prop to have. I'd like to try sticking some googly eyes on it, and a Santa hat would be festive...
No, it counts! Especially since you didn't have advance notice of what the movies would be. So 3 for 3 and a gold star for you!
I'm glad your UA-cam problems have resolved, at least for now. What on earth did you do to this site that it has it out for you?!
Wow, you had a LOT of thoughts on the Star Trek short. I agree it would have been nice to include Bones, though I also feel it's just as well they didn't. And your point about David and how much more meaningful that would have been is a good one. There were an awful lot of references crammed into the short that I just had to overlook if I wanted to enjoy it. I think simpler is better and it would have been fine without all of that, but I also understand the desire to tie the franchise together as much as possible. Or maybe they were obligated to?
Hey, happy belated birthday! I hope you had an awesome day. You sure chose a fun way to treat yourself. :D

@@Weiselberry “It is a bit more xenomorphy in person” hahaha. That line is so funny! I keep laughing at its genius, it has tickled me endlessly haha. Don’t be surprised if I use that when discussing an odd creature or a peculiar character in the future, I can’t see why everyone in the town found that one eyed fish man scary? maybe he was a bit more xenomorphy in person ?
A festiveised xenomorph with googly eyes and a Christmas hat would be hilarious! The phantomised bear will look over and think really? you make this monster a cheery festive fellow and I’m over here looking like a ghoul haha. I love the humour in your creativity. I was curious to see the teddy so searched Amazon to have a better look and it is cute, kinda lol. I call every soft toy and plushy a teddy. I scrolled down the page and saw a xenomorph snail! Weird :0 I wonder can you get a xenomorph snake? You can, it’s on Amazon. Neca Snake Alien :0, nope!
I will happily accept your gold star🌟 :D
My UA-cam is still bad unfortunately and it’s actually gotten worse. When attempting to post a comment it will often freeze and then shut down. I use Apple products and the new update has caused nothing but problems too. My feeling is it’s a combination of things including memory. I had a new wi-fi box installed and that has caused more issues. With patience I am managing to get some comments to post but it has been a struggle at times, for a little while I even thought maybe you had blocked me and I didn’t feel right asking you if I had been blocked because I didn’t want you to feel awkward about it haha I’d better wish you a Happy Christmas and a Happy New Year, I plan to say it again at a more fitting time but thought I’d better say it now too just in case my UA-cam issues continue or get worse and I can no longer comment during December.
I did have a lot of thoughts on that Trek short haha, I thought about it too much especially in the moment, I guess sometimes it’s better to let the Kirk and Bones inside us come to the surface instead of the Spock so logic doesn’t overshadow the emotion of the images shown. I have just heard about another short film on UA-cam thats supposed to be decent, it’s a WW2 short set during operation market garden titled Somewhere Near Nijmegen. I may actually watch that now.
Thank you for your kind birthday wishes, I did have an awesome day :)

Heavens, no, I wouldn't block you! Not unless you suddenly started posting awful obnoxious things or harassing other viewers. But even then, after all this time, I'd want to ask first if you were okay or if your account had been hacked. It sounds like maybe you need to do a tech overhaul, get more RAM or something, blow the cobwebs out of what you've got, ha. That could definitely explain why your UA-cam comments aren't working. I have an issue sometimes where my computer gets wonky or the internet slows down, and if it occurs when I hit send on a comment or an email, the message disappears into the ether. I've started copying what I've written beforehand just in case. I've also had a weird issue in UA-cam Studio a few times where the comments suddenly shift and my reply gets attached to the wrong comment. It creates an awkward situation. Much as I'd like to blame UA-cam for it, the problem is actually my ancient computer. All that to say that I get what you're dealing with. I'm one of those people who tends to procrastinate replacing things, continuing to use them for years until they just won't function anymore. Maybe you're one of those people too. But it is worth it to spring for the upgrade sometimes. :)

They simply didn't understand what was fascinating about the alien, and didn't see the interesting story that Aliens was obviously pointing to. The series lost me right then, and the rest of the movies were just nonsense.

The Alien films each have their own personality…while Alien 3 is very different to Aliens, so too is Aliens quite different to Alien. I’ve seen Aliens more times than I can count, but the way it glosses over certain things to make Cameron’s story work. And after the buildup Ash gave it in Alien, the Xenos are a disappointment, being far too easy to kill. These are the “Perfect Organisms”? The facehugger in Alien can melt its way through Kane’s helmet, but Cameron’s can be kept in clear tubes? The colonists came up with an an anti-xeno polymer somehow? Too many plot holes…
There is only one real CGI shot in Alien 3…the shot of the lead on the alien’s skin warping and contracting. It’s understandable that today’s audiences interpret the shots of the alien running as being CGI, it LOOKS like it’s CGI. But all of those running alien shots are actually a rod puppet, shot against blue screen on *65 millimeter film* no less, and composited onto the live-action plates. The CGI look of the shots is in part because when the blue is removed from the shot, it takes some of the *blur of movement* from the those shots as well. It’s a problem endemic to blue and green screen shots in general, especially when you’re dealing with subjects composited against light backgrounds. The snowspeeders in Empire Strikes Back are a great example, they have the same strobing in the Hoth Battle that the alien has in the tunnels of Fury 161. I’d love to see 20th Century Studios go back in a re-composite that footage using today’s technology. Justice for the Alien 3 rod puppet!

    Another impressive list!!
    1. The Peter Lorre film looks so good, I'll have to check it out!
    2. Aliens will always be one of my favorite 80s films. Everyone gave wonderful performances, especially Sigourney and Carrie Henn, in her first and only film! One of the BEST!
    3. Alien 3 sucked! I watched it when I was going through a Sigourney Weaver phase, and I hated it. Aside from the killing of beloved characters and the depressing story, the sound wasn't too good. Everyone was either whispering their lines or shouting, and you can barely hear! They also kill a dog in one of the cuts. NOOOO!!! 😡 Needless to say, when I watched Aliens, I say "they all lived happily ever after!"
Oh, the only thing I liked was Dutton's speech, but that was it.

Hey, Jerome. Yeah, Alien 3 was a bummer of a third entry. It was a betrayal of Aliens altogether. I do want to recommend Alien Resurrection, though. It's slightly better if you look at it as a stand-alone sequel. BTW, here’s the rest of what I watched in November.
    1. Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)
    2. The Pursuit of D.B. Cooper
    3. The Muppet Christmas Carol

      @Weiselberry  Місяць тому

Mad Love is a remake of the 1924 German film The Hands of Orlac, which was based on a book. Another adaptation is Hands of a Stranger (1962). Occasionally the 1946 film The Beast with Five Fingers (costarring Peter Lorre) gets lumped in with these others, but I disagree: it's an entirely different story.

Alien 3: The plot loosely tracks the Book of Revelations. The Alien seems to be the stand in for the Horsemen, but the prisoners also call it the Dragon, which is the description given of the Devil in Revelations as well. Ripley's arrival on Fiorina and many of the events that follow are a condensed version of the biblical apocalypse. In the final act, we see the remaining prisoners genuinely earn redemption through self-sacrifice. Ripley simultaneously pulls a Jesus-style sacrifice to save humanity AND casts the Dragon into the lake of fire.

Aliens [1986] is one of those annoying kid movies.
Jerome Weislberry believes that the Alien movies are about happy families and happy-clappy nonsense. Nope. It's about Ripley, and her nightmare journey towards devastating self-sacrifice.
