My only thought is that men like John Basilone are born to perform heroic deeds that most of us cannot begin to comprehend. God has blessed us with these men and may God bless John and all of our heroes.

We're in a different kind of war now, and we need heroes in this one, too. I'm not quite sure what form it will take, but courage, selflessness, and sacrifice will be the linchpins.

My father was a Marine at Guadalcanal, Tarawa. Saipan and Tinian. He was a combat engineer carrying a flamethrower and demolition charges. Silver Star and Purple Heart. He never spoke of the war. The medals were kept in a drawer. No one knew he was awarded these. When I found them and asked him why. He told me medals don’t matter. The only hero’s are the guys who don’t make it home.
These men should never be forgotten

Thank you! My father was a gunner on a bomber during the war. After he passed my siblings and I found his many decorations and awards. He was an ace credited with shooting down 6 Japanese zero's, one while he was badly wounded. He never spoke about combat but would tell funny stories about the antics of him and his friends. If we could only recapture the spirit of the "greatest generation"......

@@robertconlon101yes Robert These men were extraordinary. Like your dad mine spoke of the great Marines he served with and told funny stories
My father would be disgusted how the current generation of military men talk about how many of the enemy they have killed. That was not a subject that my dad wanted to talk about.
One day we were having a conversation, not about the war, and he stopped for a moment and said
“ you don’t know how terrible it was to set human beings in fire. They were the enemy and trying to kill me but they were still human beings”. He said he always had a rifleman near by to shoot the guy and put out him out of his misery. He had nightmares for the rest of his life. Now guys write books and go on TV to brag about killing. Different generation

Wow! Thank you for this profile of this truly great warrior! A Marine's Marine. It is profoundly moving how at key points in his life Gunnery Sgt. Basilone listened to the leading of that still small voice and followed his path. It was like he was born with a mission and purpose he was destined to discover and fulfill. It was like he really came alive and found his calling when he entered the Military. A truly amazing man and American Marine. Thank you, Gunny! God bless you always.

My uncle wanted to go back to be with his “friends” to fight the Japanese in the Pacific after recuperating from a wound he saw in action after 2 months. He could have went home instead. He was KIA sometime after returning.
He was part of the 3Cs in the thirties and as the oldest of 10 children, I believe he wanted to return to combat more so then to return stateside to an overcrowded house and a bleak environment.
He is buried in Hawaii. Not too far from Ernie Pyle’s grave. Thank you and RIP Walter Kaczowski, John Basilone and all others that gave their life for this great nation of ours, the United States of America.

Well, I see the problem today is that no one is looking UP to anything or anybody. They're, or we're all being told to look inward to self. That's a dead end. And ideas like "Death before Dishonor" don't resonate when the concept of Honor isn't defined in the culture, and therefore not part of it.

Later in life I served aboard the USNS Henry J. Kaiser, bow number 187 as it was being taken out of storage and being made ready to return to fleet service...The leader of our ten-man Force protection team was Nathaniel (Brad) Lindsey...10/02/67...His Oregon State Army Guard unit was activated and deployed to the Middle East...He was assigned as the company commander's Humvee driver... His patrol was ambushed...The vehicle was hit and set afire... Brad covered his patrol's withdrawal, firing the Humvee's fifty caliber machine gun at the muzzle flashes until he was killed...The Army awarded him a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star...Valor...I tell you this so that you know that our beloved country is still producing such men...

In both cases evil loses. But corruption as a concept becomes part of culture, and we have what we are. It's a very uphill fight to "Death before Dishonor".

And one of my early partners in medical practice was one of the feckless Italians in the Italian army who surrendered his way into becoming an American! That he was already also a doctor helped that transition.! By 1942 the Italians had had ten years of IL Duce, and knew that fascism was bad and that dying in his army was worse. So they gave up. BUT, they invented undersea recon, frogmen, Seals of their day, and were excellent. Spots of brilliance from Italy is a recurring theme.

That old adage of hindsight having 20/20 perfect vision is very evident when reviewing such historical content of those with heroic character. Dare I look through the glass darkly and see today what the character is void of? Oh my what an embarrassment it is to what these men and women paid for and were nearly silent about through humility.
Why can’t this be the wide spread infection for today? Imagine an infection of character of the opposite order of today?

I once got into a conversation with a liquor salesman from Australia in the ice bar, Red Square, Las Vegas...After a drink or twelve we got into a friendly exchange of insults...This stopped when the salesman learned that my father had served on New Guinea, and I learned that he knew who John Baselone was...He told me that most people in Australia remember that the closest Japanese ground forces got to their homes was about twenty to thirty yards in front of Sgt Basilone's machine gun section...At least the Corps named a road after him...

If you serve in military you know the answer. From every corner of this great nation. City kids, country boys, surfers, midwesterners, southerners, northerners, new englanders, guys from our territories. Had a guy in boot camp from PR. Didn’t speak English. He bunked with a Puerto Rican guy from NYC who helped him through. It was like foreign legion for that dude.
