- For a while following World War II, John Basilone was a household name. Sadly, it has been forgotten, but his heroics and selflessness remain legendary. In a Generation of standouts, Basilone remains truly one of the Greatest.

One of the greatest Marines in history. Basilone should be a house hold name!
He absolutely should be a household name. Instead of teaching pointless crap in schools this should be a mandatory class
He was a household name back in the day.
@@harti81269 and still should be!
Makes me proud to be an old Marine Sergeant.
My dad spent 4 years in the Navy then 7 years in the Airforce spending his airforce time mainly in Vietnam. Saipan was a brutal stand off!
My only thought is that men like John Basilone are born to perform heroic deeds that most of us cannot begin to comprehend. God has blessed us with these men and may God bless John and all of our heroes.
I tend to agree!
We're in a different kind of war now, and we need heroes in this one, too. I'm not quite sure what form it will take, but courage, selflessness, and sacrifice will be the linchpins.
My father was a Marine at Guadalcanal, Tarawa. Saipan and Tinian. He was a combat engineer carrying a flamethrower and demolition charges. Silver Star and Purple Heart. He never spoke of the war. The medals were kept in a drawer. No one knew he was awarded these. When I found them and asked him why. He told me medals don’t matter. The only hero’s are the guys who don’t make it home.
These men should never be forgotten
Wow. Wow! Thank you for sharing. God bless him!🙏🙏
Thank you! My father was a gunner on a bomber during the war. After he passed my siblings and I found his many decorations and awards. He was an ace credited with shooting down 6 Japanese zero's, one while he was badly wounded. He never spoke about combat but would tell funny stories about the antics of him and his friends. If we could only recapture the spirit of the "greatest generation"......
@@robertconlon101yes Robert These men were extraordinary. Like your dad mine spoke of the great Marines he served with and told funny stories
My father would be disgusted how the current generation of military men talk about how many of the enemy they have killed. That was not a subject that my dad wanted to talk about.
One day we were having a conversation, not about the war, and he stopped for a moment and said
“ you don’t know how terrible it was to set human beings in fire. They were the enemy and trying to kill me but they were still human beings”. He said he always had a rifleman near by to shoot the guy and put out him out of his misery. He had nightmares for the rest of his life. Now guys write books and go on TV to brag about killing. Different generation
Wow beyond amazing🙏🙏🙏
Amazing
It breaks my heart to see what our country has become after all the sacrifices men like him & hundreds of thousands made.
God bless you Gunny. RIP. 🙏❤️🙏❤️🙏❤️ 🫡 🇺🇸
God Bless the Greatest Generation!🇺🇸🇺🇸
We're in a war now for the soul of this country, and we'll have to become greater than the greatest because our enemies are not flesh and blood.
@flparkermdpc boy howdy you're right about that !

I watched the Pacific and I was so impressed at the character of this Italian American! Proud paesan
Amazing Marine!
Thank you for keeping his memory alive.
Absolutely. We love telling the stories of our heroes. More to come!
He was a damn good Marine. I myself a former Marine and Italian he holds a honored place in my memory.👍
Thank you for your service!
Mark,I am an American of Anglo/Irish descent.John Basilone was a great Patriot,Badass Marine and We are all proud of this great American Hero.
This man is very inspirational and should be taught by every class, and as an Italian it is very know in my house who he is
I couldn't agree more!
I've read about Sergeant Basilone and his heroic service and from my father. The later was Air Force and in Korea. Even a different arm of the service a decade later knew of the sergeant. I remember hearing his name late 60s and 70s while attending various VFW and DAV functions. Always with deep reverence.
Thanks for sharing!
I agree with you, every high school student should be told about heroes like him. RIP Hero you will never be forgotten. Semper Fi Devil Dog

Wow thank you, appreciate it
Because of him and men like him we have the life we have! From the depths of my heart, I thank you. Honorable is the definition of your life. I’m proud to call you my brother.

Thank you for your service and sacrifice Gunnery Sargent John Basilone . A true American hero. RIP 🇺🇸🇺🇸
Amen❤️❤️❤️❤️🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
From a young age (long before the tv series The Pacific) I knew who GySgt John Basilone and SgtMaj Dan Daly were. My MsSgt dad told me stories of his two heroes.
Wow very cool!
John Basilone is more famous than Sinatra. To those who know what counts, he's the epitome of manhood. A zebra can't change his stripes!
Agreed!
This is such a good channel. I wish more people could see this and learn of the warrior’s who helped save our freedoms. Semper fi.
Thank you! We're gonna continue telling these stories!
Like and share, and follow, and support and you'll be helping people to find the channel which sells itself.
That voice in his head wasn't random it was God telling him what his path should be. And that path saved hundreds of men. Marines never quit, that's why, even after they leave the corp, they don't say I WAS a Marine, they say I AM a Marine. This man is one of their finest examples. God Bless him for his ultimate sacrifice and following God's calling! Semper Fi!
Well said. Semper Fi!
I'm getting persuaded that Basilone's story ended just the way it should have: Death before dishonor.
First heard of him just the other day (10/8/2023) in the series "Pacific." RIP.
Amazing guy right?

Thank you all U.S.A. military and support. You are the reason we are still here.
Nick, I really like your format: direct storytelling. It feels authentically passionate. Cheers sir. 🙏🏽💛
Thank you! That's what we're trying for. Hopefully getting better and better!
Well Done !!!!!!
Thanks!
He has a stretch of Interstate 5 in Southern California that passes through Camp Pendleton named after him. Every time I drive that section of the interstate I’m reminded of this great American war hero.
Beautiful ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks Nick! Great Story🇺🇸 "Some Gave All" - Immediately Comes To Mind. Total Hero!!!💯❤️🇺🇸
♥️♥️♥️🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸👍👍👍
John Basilone was a real American hero and an example of a great Marine. RIP 🙏 🪦 may he rest in peace.
Amen!
Wow! Thank you for this profile of this truly great warrior! A Marine's Marine. It is profoundly moving how at key points in his life Gunnery Sgt. Basilone listened to the leading of that still small voice and followed his path. It was like he was born with a mission and purpose he was destined to discover and fulfill. It was like he really came alive and found his calling when he entered the Military. A truly amazing man and American Marine. Thank you, Gunny! God bless you always.
Amen!!!!!
My uncle wanted to go back to be with his “friends” to fight the Japanese in the Pacific after recuperating from a wound he saw in action after 2 months. He could have went home instead. He was KIA sometime after returning.
He was part of the 3Cs in the thirties and as the oldest of 10 children, I believe he wanted to return to combat more so then to return stateside to an overcrowded house and a bleak environment.
He is buried in Hawaii. Not too far from Ernie Pyle’s grave. Thank you and RIP Walter Kaczowski, John Basilone and all others that gave their life for this great nation of ours, the United States of America.
I knew this story, but thank you for an excellent retelling!
Thank you! An amazing hero!
I first learned about John Basilone through watching The Pacific, and upon watching this video it truly confirms he is a Hero. God Bless 🙏🏻
Amen!
Goodnight Chesty, wherever you are. A man among chiseled men.
Love it!
He should have received a second Medal of Honor!
Agreed.
So true, we need to look up to Heroes like JB and their sacrifices. As opposed to what Young Americans look up to today.
A true hero!
Well, I see the problem today is that no one is looking UP to anything or anybody. They're, or we're all being told to look inward to self. That's a dead end. And ideas like "Death before Dishonor" don't resonate when the concept of Honor isn't defined in the culture, and therefore not part of it.
Thank you for this story. Semper Fi
Thanks for watching!♥️♥️♥️🇺🇸
Came here from the link in your short video. Very well done. Thank you so much for keeping history alive.
Thank you!!!!!
Another great New Jerseyan. I point out the bridge named after him on the Turnpike to my wife and son every time we travel up the Turnpike...
Total total badass! I focus on him in Our tribute to our amazing Veterans ua-cam.com/video/rlUM0Kfm8wI/v-deo.htmlsi=ozyMZQzz3fBfjZAu
Somehow our helmets, weapons and 782 gear always seemed a bit lighter while marching to and from the mountains of Camp Pendelton down Baselone road in1963...
Later in life I served aboard the USNS Henry J. Kaiser, bow number 187 as it was being taken out of storage and being made ready to return to fleet service...The leader of our ten-man Force protection team was Nathaniel (Brad) Lindsey...10/02/67...His Oregon State Army Guard unit was activated and deployed to the Middle East...He was assigned as the company commander's Humvee driver... His patrol was ambushed...The vehicle was hit and set afire... Brad covered his patrol's withdrawal, firing the Humvee's fifty caliber machine gun at the muzzle flashes until he was killed...The Army awarded him a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star...Valor...I tell you this so that you know that our beloved country is still producing such men...

There are so many Italian heroes in US history, it’s a wonder how Italy was so feckless in WWII.
Interesting take on this video, for sure.
The best immigrated. Most to NY😊
Now there's a double edged sword if there ever was one. On the one hand you have Fiorello LaGuardia and Rudy Guiliano, and the other you have Al Capone and Luciano. Classic Good versus evil. In both cases evil loses. But corruption as a concept becomes part of culture, and we have what we are. It's a very uphill fight to "Death before Dishonor".
Giuliani. I can't believe I made that mistake.
And one of my early partners in medical practice was one of the feckless Italians in the Italian army who surrendered his way into becoming an American! That he was already also a doctor helped that transition.! By 1942 the Italians had had ten years of IL Duce, and knew that fascism was bad and that dying in his army was worse. So they gave up. BUT, they invented undersea recon, frogmen, Seals of their day, and were excellent. Spots of brilliance from Italy is a recurring theme.
Thanks!
Thank you❤️❤️❤️
A great video... makes me proud to be an old Marine Sergeant. Thank you. I always enjoy your videos. You do a great job. Thank you again. Semper Fi
To be honest, the Marine Corps should not have let him return to the Fleet. That's just my opinion. Semper Fi

That old adage of hindsight having 20/20 perfect vision is very evident when reviewing such historical content of those with heroic character. Dare I look through the glass darkly and see today what the character is void of? Oh my what an embarrassment it is to what these men and women paid for and were nearly silent about through humility.
Why can’t this be the wide spread infection for today? Imagine an infection of character of the opposite order of today?

What a hero 🙏💜
Bigtime! Amazing man!
The coolest thing is to hear fellow marines in interviews that were there speak of him . They looked up to him they admired him and they were proud to serve with him . I cant remember what exactly Don Graves said but basically it effected the morale of the men when he was killed . Everyone knew he was there and word spread fast of his death. There arent many first hand accounts that i have heard , 3 . If there is more i would love to hear their story.
Beautifully said♥️♥️♥️🙏🏼🇺🇸
I once got into a conversation with a liquor salesman from Australia in the ice bar, Red Square, Las Vegas...After a drink or twelve we got into a friendly exchange of insults...This stopped when the salesman learned that my father had served on New Guinea, and I learned that he knew who John Baselone was...He told me that most people in Australia remember that the closest Japanese ground forces got to their homes was about twenty to thirty yards in front of Sgt Basilone's machine gun section...At least the Corps named a road after him...
Amazing! If you like our videos, you'll ❤️❤️❤️ our novel, available at amazon: rb.gy/w77x1w or www.thisdate.com

John Basilone was born in Buffalo NY and grew up in N.J.
Correct
Basilone sempre con noi
Absolutely
That's a great man and a great Marine! I love his story! I truly believe all Marines aspire to be exactly like him in that time they're faced with it! What a stud.
Thanks!
…Where do we get such men…?
Amazing right?
Seems as if God supplies them as we need them. Thank God for the ones we had,and pray for our future.
If you serve in military you know the answer. From every corner of this great nation. City kids, country boys, surfers, midwesterners, southerners, northerners, new englanders, guys from our territories. Had a guy in boot camp from PR. Didn’t speak English. He bunked with a Puerto Rican guy from NYC who helped him through. It was like foreign legion for that dude.
I think if more people were aware of the carnage, from not so long ago, fewer of today’s petty arguments would have any meaning.
I think you're right!
Here in Jersey, many things are named after him...
Love it!!!!!!
A true American badass.

He was never a soldier period. He was a marine two very different things.
Was a soldier when he was in the army. He was a legend as a Marine.
He was in Army. That’s where he got nickname “Manila” John Basilone. He’d been in the PI with the army before joining Marines.
Wish Basilone could see Washington now.
Wish the heros could come and take over.

There should be a Camp Basilone.
💯💯💯
There is a road named for him at Camp Pendleton.

After watching the Pacific it seems like they sent John back to die on Iwo because he slept with the wrong starlet.
He did sleep with her, but that's not why they sent him back. He demanded to go back.
how about talking about hero who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan? some brave people who fought
We have a dozen videos on them. Go through our 400 videos please.

Ours too! Legend!
The real war was in Europe, the Pacific was "bush league" as Omar Bradley called it.
It's not about comparing theaters of war, it's about appreciating all who fought.
Tell that to the thousands of men who died there.
That’s a disgusting disgraceful comment. Bush league my ass. The Japs took no prisoners. The Japs didn’t surrender they fought to their death. The islands were tropical, the bodies decomposed in hours. It was carnage. Omar Bradley should have been ashamed if he said that and it does not bear repeating.
If Bradley said that he wasn't up to the rank he attained.
Thanks!
THANK YOU ❤️❤️❤️❤️
