Thank you and appreciate the tips.. I have had a record store Butter Beats in Australia 23 years and like you I live to hear great music I have not listened too previously ... love your vibe ... knowledge and music.... I will own some of your vinyl soon... looking towards the future perfect beat... peace and respect...
Dereck, I'm not even done watching this video and you've already given me a lot of homework. Gettin' schooled! And I appreciate your understated delivery.
Enjoyed this greatly and didn't even realize it's more than 10 years old! Many great albums here and I especially like those on the nessa label. Air Time by Air is another favourite. Thanks very much.
hi dereck,I have been catching up on your many previous posts. thanks man, I get it. I was touched by your posts on alan holdsworth and chris cornell. thank you for making me aware of clinical depression (when you're depressed but don't know why). I get that too. and we're the same age. so big thank yous for all your stuff; it helps me...badrat.
It's great to see yours and others appreciation of jazz without limiting boundaries. Undoubtedly good music enhances quality of life. Keep up the videos and I encourage others to also be involved.
@dereckvon Man I tell you during the early 90's there was a lot of great Jazz artists coming through the Bay Area. Pharoah played here a lot, in fact I'm pretty certain he lived in Oakland for a while. There was a really great venue called Koncepts Cultural gallery which would put on the most stellar shows.. Pharoah, Sonny Sharrock, Sun Ra, Billy Harper, etc.. those were just some of the highlights for me..There's actually a DVD floating around of the Sun Ra show I saw there. Need to get that..
That Eddie Henderson ''Inside out'' is a huge LP with Herbie Hancock on fender rhodes. Was lucky enough to stumble across a copy for 1 british pound in a charity shop(UK)
Another great vid, Dereck!! Definitely a jazz fan myself, though much of my jazz collection is on CD. In fact, after watching this I had to get out the "Live-Evil" Miles recording, great stuff for sure! Love Miles Davis to death.....have at least 25 different Miles albums, & that ain't nearly enough! Monk, Coltrane, etc., excellent. I need to find those Herbie Hancock albums, haven't heard those. There is SOO much jazz out there to be discovered........
@dhanycz Thanks Dan. I have really enjoyed your videos as well. We share a deep love for Boris. Those guys are just amazing. Without a doubt I will post more jazz very soon. Discovering this community of collectors is just the best.
Great to know there's a more diverse profile in collectors than just millenials and hipster. Fantastic vids! Very helpful. Just subscribed; making it a point to view routinely.
@fatbackfunk You best believe I do and cherish the memory of meeting David Murray and Arthur Blythe many years ago. World Saxophone Quartet is the shit!
Gene. Ammons .live evil one great cover art .headhunters with Harvey Mason on drums is so good.digging the snow here in jersey.not digging I'm digging...with a snow shovel...a great show went to early seventies was Hubert laws Stanley turrentine Herbie hancock.me N my friends were equally participating with rock shows N jazz clubs N concerts.dereck this episode is loaded with goodies .thanks !!!!!!
Really digging all of your music (zoning hard on Arks Destined for Space right now). It's always a pleasure to be informed by your broad selection of vinyl. I usually write down 5-10 albums when I watch your videos, and I go and find 'em and give a listen. You've inspired at least a few purchases as well, thanks again for everything!
This brings back memories, as I saw quite a few of the musicians mentioned here between 1975 and 1995 at various San Francisco Bay Area venues: Keystone Korner, Bach Society, Kimball's. Yoshi's (Claremont Avenue), Koncepts Cultural Gallery, Radio Valencia. I feel very lucky to have seen so many great musicians in intimate venues.
I think Chick Corea's "Is" period is his best. They released a double CD of the "Is" sessions. Mwandishi is my all-time favorite Herbie Hancock period--which I believe was a little before the time "Sextant" was released. "Crossings" has always been my favorite Hancock album, even though I heard "Headhunters" first. Herbie Hancock is the best Rhoads player of all time, and then Joe Zawinal. Shit, now I have to go out and buy some of those albums you showed; especially "The Art of the Improvisers" and "Cosmic Music"!
Great collection! I'm in awe. But Jan Garbarek is from Norway. Nordic, yes, but more precisely Norwegian! :) As well as Terje Rypdal, Arild Andersen and the rest of his crew on that album. All of them are still alive and kicking and still playing all over the place.
Hi Dereck, yet again some great info. Yes, I'm new to the VC. But only new to the video/UA-cam side. I have been a record collector/record lover/record dealer/record hunter for decades. But life has given me some hard blows and I have lost more than half my vinyl collection through the years. BUt enough about me. You mentioned the Chick Corea album, "IS". I noticed that the "Complete IS Sessions" is on iTunes. his combines the "Sundance" album as well. Cheers for now! Rob.
Very nice. I have never seen that Miles Live or that Coltrane before. Lovely! That Herbie and Monk is incredible as well. Those comments at the end were spoken very well too. That to me is the essence of a vibration that creates what we call notes and music! Simply question we should ask oursleves... Does that vibration and calling out of that music cause things in you to answer back? If the the answer is yes.....YOU BUY IT! lol
I need to make a video I have the entire impulse records, cti & kudu records also many more jazz, rock, soul ect. I used to work at kjazz 88.1fm and got to meet many of my heroes & friends....
@dereckvon Oh I knew you had some WSQ based off of what you've shown so far :) Yeah they were indeed the shit! Saw them a few times in the 90's just riveting, amazing what kind of sound just a quartet of saxophones can deliver. And I saw David Murray a couple of times on his own as well. the guys a beast! One of my faves for sure.. Also Sonny Sharrock "Ask The Ages" is one of the best albums ever made. But sadly never released on vinyl. Saw him with Pharoah Sanders, life changing experience.
Stellar picks. Always wanted to do a jazz show on the radio. Do you stream 'Urban Jazz Exp.' out of Southampton? Really, real good. Anyway, great channel! Subscribed.
Good selection of jazz for sure. Herbie and Sextant is hard to beat for psych jazz. Yeah, that Live Miles is pretty smoking. Never heard of that Corea album either or that Coltrane. Looks like you got some Advent speaker (I have some too).
Man you have one amazing collection.. These videos just keep getting better each time.. "Flood" is one of THE best live recordings ever! That show captured that band at their peak IMO. Paul Jackson & Mike Clark=just mind boggling..! And YES everybody should get their Monk on!! That Coltrane piece...sooo jealous. Love Don Cherry, another great that I was fortunate to see before he passed. Do you have any World Saxophone Quartet? or any related pieces i.e. Dave Murray, etc..? I bet you do.. :)
Looking back through some of your previous videos again Dereck.Live Evil is big on my want list. Will keep my eyes peeled for some of what you've shown though there are so many grails that to score even a couple of these great recordings would be beyond my reach.Speaking of German Jazz have you anything on the Ego or Japo labels?
Thank you and appreciate the tips.. Thank you for the excellent choices. So great to see Spiritual Unity. I have owned that one three times.

LOVE Miles! One of my all-time favorite artists!
Enjoyed this greatly and didn't even realize it's more than 10 years old! Many great albums here and I especially like those on the nessa label. Air Time by Air is another favourite. Thanks very much.
Excellent taste!!
Great stuff, and most of your sleeves are impeccable.
That rack behind you is quite impressive, I might need to build one.

Hancock Sextant......In my opinion one of the greatest recordings ever made!

Thanks for showing some of your Jazz collection Dereck , so interesting and have again learned so much from watching.
Very good information!
Dude, that John Coltrane album goes for around $300 to $1,000!
Hold on to that one!
Good selection of jazz for sure. Herbie and Sextant is hard to beat for psych jazz. Yeah, that Live Miles is pretty smoking. Never heard of that Corea album either or that Coltrane. Looks like you got some Advent speaker (I have some too).
We share very similar views German music, etc. Great video.
@TheEndtroducing
My bad. Thanks for commenting and watching.
great collection!! I'm searching the Chick Corea "Is"
Very lucky.
