Hey Lee, thanks for the great content, interesting to see such a road trip without the use of the Tesla superchargers. In the interests of viewers getting the correct information, i just want to bring up your remarks regarding the efficiency’s of city driving and highway driving. Regenerative braking is a wonderful thing it recoups the energy that is generally lost during braking with a “conventional” car, It is not however a reason why an EV is more efficient during city driving compared to highway driving. The most efficient drive you can possibly do in an EV is a one at a constant slow speed with absolutely no regen braking at all. The laws of Conservation of energy means that you can not regenerate more energy than you used to accelerate the car in the first place (assuming level terrain) and due to the losses associated with putting energy back in to the battery pack it is actually far better if you dont have to regen/slow down at all. If you were to use the same principles on the highway ie: speed up to 110kmh then regen down to 0kmh and then accelerate back up to 110kmh and so on, you would find that your efficiency over a certain distance would be way worse than driving that distance at a constant 110kmh. Exactly the same can be said for driving in the city, If it were possible to drive through a city without stopping you would find the efficiency far better than the usual stop/start. The one and only reason for EVs to have worse efficiency on the highway is due to the huge increase in aerodynamic drag when travelling at higher speed. There are many people who have this idea of gaining free energy when slowing down using regenerative braking but unfortunately it is a red herring to efficiency, stop/start traffic is a necessary evil it is in no way a benefit. The only time you kind of get free energy is when regen braking down a hill but this would only be true if the car didn’t have to drive up that hill in the first place. I hope this makes sense. Thanks again for your videos 😊

Thanks, I didn’t know that. I think it makes sense.
Now I feel a bit silly for being wrong so confidently. 🤣 I may see if I can find someone to interview about this and do a video to correct myself and inform folks about it better.
Thanks again for taking the time to tell me.

@@notacarguy_au Haha not at all Lee, your videos are always very down to earth and you explain things in a language that everyone can understand which is great.
You were absolutely right that city driving offers better efficiency than highway driving, which is totally opposite to what everyone is used to with ICE vehicles, use and conservation of energy is a widely misunderstood subject.
I would be more than happy to help out in future videos if you ever needed it. I was thinking of starting my own channel but videoing and editing is definitely not my forte 😂.

As a new Model Y owner I have to say I really enjoyed watching this video (including the first part on your trip to Sydney)! Yes it was long, but you made it worthwhile and quite entertaining to watch! Especially the parts where you needed to use the toilet - I unfortunately suffer the same problem and need to use a restroom frequently on road trips LOL. I'm planning a road trip from Brisbane north next month, and really looking forward to seeing what it's like using the Chargefox chargers. Currently there is only one Tesla Supercharger along this trip (Gympie) so I'll be forced to use the Chargefox 50kWh chargers. Thanks again for going to this huge effort in putting these videos together mate! I hope there are more people out there like you doing the same. Keep up the good work!!!!

That's fair, it is a bit more faf not using the superchargers, though not a huge amount. But yes, much easier simply using the Tesla solution. Will be interesting to see once the superchargers open to non Tesla users how things shape out.
I predict it won't be much different as non Tesla drivers will be used to their way of doing things and the superchargers are more expensive for them. So they may use them, but not as a primary option. Then again, that's just a theory, no idea how it will actually pan out.

One of the biggest advantage of the EV is toilet breaks😊. Not an owner yet, but about to pull the trigger on most likely a Model 3. These videos of Melbourne-Sydney-Melbourne are just so educational for believers, but not yet owners. Funny how there was a lineup at the petrol pumps and you could just plug-in in Euroa. I do agree that the stop in Barnawartha is a little to far from the freeway. However, BP Glenrowan now has BP Pulse chargers right on the Hume.

Thanks, you should totally start a channel. It's a bit of work and I would suggest trying to film 3-4 videos before you go live and then you have a few to feed out for a while. Otherwise the "pressure" you can put on yourself to try and get one out each week can get a bit much.
Other bit of advice is to focus on making sure your audio is good. People will engage with so so footage as long as there is good audio. But even if you have the most beautiful footage ever shot, if the audio isn't good, people will turn off.

Great vid Lee. Thanks for doing it. You make it interesting and I love your attitude. Can I ask a question please about autopilot on a highway? I’m sure all of us have been travelling down a highway in traffic then all of a sudden you have to brake hard to avoid a pile up. Do you think (or have experienced?) that autopilot would be as safe or safer than a human? I’m sure ultimately it will be safer but I’m wondering what it is like at the moment. Thanks for any reply.

    • @notacarguy_au
      @notacarguy_au  Рік тому +1

Thank you for the kind words. In regards to your autopilot comment. It depends, I've never been using autopilot and been in a situation that it's had to drop anchor. I have had the dreaded "phantom breaking" a few times and it certainly slows quite dramatically then.
And the fact that it can still do the phantom breaking, though it has been ages since it's done it, so things are getting better. But the fact that it can still happen, I think shows that as good as autopilot is, it's still got a bit of ways to go before it's as good we we want it to be.

@@notacarguy_au thanks Lee. I really would love to find out one day what type of timescale it does a full assessment on. I think it is approx 100 times per sec on hardware 3. Don’t quote me though. So the potential to be way better than human exists but like you I wouldn’t trust it just yet. In theory we humans are purely visually detecting that pile up of traffic ahead and realising the change in speed and then acting a third of a sec after deciding. To my mind it should be able to detect the change in speed over several hundredths of a sec then actuate brakes within a tenth of a sec or so. And never be distracted. So potentially much better than us but not trustworthy yet. Thanks for replying and I appreciate the effort you put into your vids. I’m one of your subscribers and do appreciate your channel. I was playing around with ABRP today and found that if you have it set up as a Tesla, you can search for 3rd party chargers and add them as stops then enter the % you will charge to and keep adding.
The only thing is that you need to know where they are and search for something like "Chargefox, Goulburn".
I'm not sure if it was easier to put the car in ABRP as the ioniq or it was something that you didn't know about/wasn't in there at the time?

Lee, do you find the MY seats sweaty? I've heard others say yes on warm to hot days, but i guess it depends on how long you sit in the seat for. Also curious about the glass roof and how much heat radiates into the cabin (eg. Is your head in a warm air bubble but your body cool due to the aircon)? I've yet to rent a MY to find these things out before I buy.
