      Prisons for profit = more ridiculous laws being passed to profit prisons. Amazed how some people dont get that.

    So even if I'm innocent of a crime I now will be stuck in jail, unable to work, pay bills or support my family. So basically even if I'm innocent my life is ruined? Cool.

    • @Maomowable
      @Maomowable 6 років тому +15

      Yes exactly. This system literally creates more more criminals and 'bad guys' than it stops. Which is a good thing because the prison industrial complex is a multi million dollar industry that's just booming.

      Sam Girardin yep. Check out Kalief Browder’s story. 3 years in jail because he couldn’t afford bail, 16 years old.

      Yep. Kalief was in jail for 3 years for a crime he didn't commit, hundreds of days in solitary confinement (there is a limit to the number of days, which they didn't respect), just because the prosecution couldn't manage to find the one witness. Prison affected him so much that he ended up committing suicide. Unfortunately, he's only one of many.

    Australia does not have this cash bail bond system. If the judge grants bail with a money amount nominated, some collateral has to be put up or nominated. The courts will only foreclose on the collateral if the accused jumps bail. Most small crimes don't have a collateral requirement.

  • @gutz1981
    @gutz1981 6 років тому +7

    I tell you what would be good. If your bail is way too high for you to afford and you are stuck in prison for it "I set bail at 1 million dollars" Since the point of the bail among other things is to "Pay to stay out of jail" if I cannot pay that bail, and am PUT in prison and am found to be innocent after months or years in jail waiting, then I think the price of the bail I could not afford before should become the compensation I get for being innocent and put in jail in the first place. Makes sense to me.

      Yeaaaaa sorry buddy you're wrong on that front. Norm MacDonald is actually a funny comedian that doesn't care about offending people...which is at the root of all comedy. He is also very insightful when it comes to social commentary and thinks about things. Jim Jefferies is on the late night cash cow now so he will say whatever popular laughs he knows he can get. He used to be good, but he makes the exact same jokes that every other late night show host makes. He has now become the joke that he so frequently used to make! Why risk to offend and be your own person when you know you can make millions toeing the line???

    Those who think bail system is a good idea should be wrongly accused and hit with a bail they cant afford.
    Even rich people have their financial limits.
    Keeping someone in jail without proving them guilty should be a last resort. And ... even then, the conditions should be similar to what one has in a normal household/dormitory and not in prison( they are not prisoners yet)
    Use electronic tracking instead.

    • @eirebhoy132
      @eirebhoy132 6 років тому +1

      UninstallingWindows they should copy Britain’s system where you are released on say 10000 pound bail but you don’t pay it unless you break your bail conditions, meaning everyone gets an opportunity to keep themselves on the outside, if you don’t then you have to pay your bail before having a chance of being released again it makes so much more sense

    1 of many reasons that as a US Military Veteran i refuse to live in the USA (18 years abroad and counting). It is chaos there, with so many institutionally racist things that makes everything run a at a backward pace. It is simply untenable that a country that wants to advance cannot advance due to its affinity toward racism. I look forward to when our country catches up with the rest of the developed world which is about 50 years ahead of the USA but until then I will call Europe my home.

  • @peterschmidt1453
    @peterschmidt1453 3 роки тому

    The John Oliver show did a similar story, with some US states unbelievably contracting out their court fines. If a person gets fined $500 in court, a private company pays $500 to the courts and now the "criminal" is on the hook to a debt collection company for the $500, and they charge like loan sharks with all sorts of fees, high interest and default fines. The story showed examples of people having paid thousands for a few hundred dollar fine and they still are not paid off and are facing court again for non payment to the debt agency, it's absolutely criminal.

    How does the Bail thing even work? Is it like a pawn that you get back if you are not convicted later on? Or is it just that the rich dads can pay their kids out

    • @mattm5361
      @mattm5361 5 років тому +1

      It's basically used as a pawn.
      Judge sets a dollar amount that you will get back once you return to court for sentencing, Don't show up and you lose the money paid and the cops throw you back in jail.
      Can't afford the bond? A bail bondsman will lend you the money and charge a high interest rate, if you can't afford a loan then you will sit in jail for months until you are sentenced.
      I believe america is one of the few if not only countries that use this system.

  • @mjohanss1975

      A .Suijker lol that’s exactly the point he is making in this video.
      Why are people being put in jail of something they have been accused of doing?
      And if you got the money you can be released but only if you have the money.
      That’s not justice.
      Either you have reasonable suspicion to detain a person or you don’t.
      There should not be money involved in that decision.
