This has come in for repair from Clint aka Oxford Shortwave Log @OxfordShortwaveLog . Here's a recent video he made explaining the issues • My beloved Sony ICF-SW... . I assume it will need all the electrolytic capacitors changed so today I'm going to pull it apart for a look. Hopefully the leaking capacitors have not damaged the board. To remove the ribbon cable, push back the tabs around the front boards and take the two boards out together. This gives you access to the flex cable connector. there is a subercap/battery on the one of the front boards. after all that you are left with the speaker surround clipped to the back board. I took mine apart as per the service manual and discovered that between the display and the board there is a rubber zebra strip which hours the get refitted properly. Also looking at the two front boards from the display side there is a clip on the right hand side of boards.This clip connects both boards together. ATB

Hi Graham. It's taken all day, but I've finally finished watching. Great advice on the 2001D and groups IO. When I picked mine up 10 days ago it was showing Error 3. I thought what have I spent all this money on. I was very glum on the long drive back. I found groups IO and joined up when I saw all the things you can do to them. I hard wired the batteries and it came to life fully. The 95 year old gentleman I bought it from said it had been in the cupboard for 25 years. Great radio. All the high end Sony radios are as rare as hens teeth here. You had to go to the 1 Sony shop, or special order them. I look forward to the videos on your mods, although I might be reluctant to mod it as it is so original - even the LEDs are bright, so it didn't get much use. Hope the dreded lurgy goes away soon in the house. Andrew
Hi Graham, thx for that great video! Heard a lot about recapping old SONYs with tantalums, but first time I actually saw it being done on an SW55.
Did SONY eventually fix the issue with those SMD electrolyte caps over the course of the production period, or are all SW55 gonna run into it at some point? Mine's a 100k+ serial number, still in daily use and no symptoms so far whatsoever, but I'm wondering if I should go for a preventive recapping...what would you recommend?

Hi Falk. Sadly all the SW55's and SW77's suffer from bad caps. You need to get yours done really as it can really damage the PCB which can be costly to repair. All the best Graham
