- The runoff from tofu factories pollutes rivers and kills fish. Over the last 40 years, Indonesia has built almost 50,000 biogas plants to convert the wastewater. We visited Sumedang to see how communities are producing cooking fuel from the waste of this popular food.
The tofu factories visited: Haji Oji and ITA

Thanks so much!
Dear govt of indonesia (local or central govt). Please support this. Dont hide behind words "we dont have budget, we dont have money for this". Not again. If this year you dont hve the money, please make tjis project as your funding in the next year budgeting.
Gotta ask your govt for a better english teacher
Apa2 minta pemerintah apapun keadaannya 🤣. Lha wong disebutkan pemerintah udh ngasih gitu kok 😆

jangankan energi terbarukan, jalan umum rusak bertahun tahun aja kaga di benerin 😂
8:10 after she said "we have nothing to hide", she also said "we didn't patent this technology". But it didn't get translated.
That's the most important takeaway here. No excuses for the Indonesian government.
up
Yes, that's true
The funding for waste management is pretty bad, but with this it's more of an investment, hopefully they'll see that and start building more facilities
You can easily see Dr Neni Sintawardani is a true scientist who’s dedicated to the field. She said that the technology is not patented, so there’s no reasons for these plants not to be built all around Indonesia.
I never would have thought something like tofu would be so polluting.
Excellent video.
Anything that is produced in very high quantity generates pollution, most particularly when the waste isn't disposed of properly.
@@ohmy7926 And most of the soy that is grown goes to feed factory farmed animals. Not making tofu. So eating meat is still more polluting than eating tofu.
I live close to tofu factory couple years ago and i cant tell you that they stink really bad
Any organism that consumes plants produces methane, there’s no way around it
@Oh My you know they’re in Indonesia right? And countries all over the world love soy products, making food, sauce or milk out of other plant products would still need water
In Japan we eat the dregs too, they are called okara. The way we make tofu is slightly different too.
I've seen how tofu is made in Japan. Feels and looks more cleaner. Is the waste water the same as in this video? How is it disposed?
Here in Indonesia, the dregs are also eaten sometimes. We ferment them with the same yeast that is used to make another soy product of ours called tempe. The end product is called 'tempe gembus"
@@kaksoispistev5403 emang tempe dari ampas tahu? kaga ga sih?
@@spookymyth4413 tadi kan dibilang "tempe gembus"
@@kaksoispistev5403 tempe gembus from dreg is not tasty, only few people want buy/ consume it, so is not economics…thats why dreg if tofu sell as animal feed like cow
Don't work harder work smarter, lots of things are wasted because people were lazy. It's good to see the government isn't punishing the people or factories but instead work together to make it cleaning & better for everyone.
Not necessarily because they were lazy, mostly because they have no knowledge to do things better. For example these people who works on these tofu factory mostly only went to elemantary school, heck some don't even go to school.
They dont work harder bcz they're lazy, wel...
People like Neni are those who change the world for the better
@@tinygrim it's because we have a society that rewards utter nastiness. I always say: great art and innovation happens in spite of, not because of, capitalism
Thanks God i live in contry that produce varieties of tofu. But i didn't know that the wastes could polute the rivers. As mentioned before, building biogas facilities in separated areas in Indonesia is a big challenge. And not all people could accept to convert to biogas, including i and my Mom. We're not sure, especially about the security of the pipeline.
I had no idea the run off can cause problems. I have a feeling most totuf eaters, especially in the US don't know it is harmful to the environment.
in western countries there are more general waste water treatment plants. I don't know how much the U.S. people regulate runoff into rivers but i'm pretty sure tofu isn't a big problem there :)
Every excessive things will cause harm to the environtment
There is no waste in trafitional tofu making. You use everything for something. The milk, the whey, the solids, and the soaking water.
The acidic runoff will cause problems, but if it's diluted or neutralized with basic solutions, it's probably not a problem
That's amazing. Dr Neni Sintawardani is a powerful lady. I wish we had this in our country too.
1:17 Ah yes cigarette flavor tofu. 🤣
typical indonesian employee
Building wastewater treatment in small scale industry such as tofu industry sometimes is so challanging, We (me and my collague in workplace) has utilized the tofu wastewater as alternative nutrition for industrial biological wastewater treatment. Hopefully it would slightly reduce the hazard of tofu wastewater to the environment
Best idea sir❤️Congratulations ! You truly deserved it. You always work so hard on your videos and you truly do put so much effort and work into what you do
Sounds like a great idea that helps just about everyone! Hopefully it catches on more but who knows.
Super cool ideal.
Mad props to Indonesia.

I bet those cigarette ashes really add to the flavor of the tofu. 😄
Hahahhaa
Wow i don't know that in Sumedang west java has already have bio gas from wasted tofu. This is actually great opportunity for indonesia move sustainable living for poor family who can't buy Gas monthly from goverment.
Very smart way for use the waste!
Quite a genius idea!👊👊

Wow! What a cool process ❤
Thank you
Ini bagus! Good job Indonesia 💪
It is always amazing to see a community owned venture that benefits the community
Why do the guys can't stop smoking even in making food ??
Bro, almost every male blue collar worker in Indonesia aged 40-50+ is addicted to cigarettes. You can’t get away from the smell of cigarette smoke because of just how many people are addicted to it.
Tofu is the best! 😍😊💪🏻
wonderful!!!
Now could you imagine if these places had their economy as bolstered as the USA or if they paid the people who come up with these alternative ways to survive didn't have to find them in the first place if they had access to resources to give them a better quality of life, the world would be quite a bit different I'd think.
1:16 , Gotta love the ciggarette in the food processing facility
similar in my village they use tofu dregs for gas stoves, but a little expensive
Biasanya limbah tahu banyak yang mau, untuk makanan ternak. Di sana tidak begitu kah?
Yaaayyy... My hometown!
It's been years that I haven't come home.
I love tofu. One of the easiest foods to eat and very easy on your gut microbiome. Just overall a good healthy environmentally sustainable food
Interesting. How does the cost of the biogas compare to other fuel sources?
It's always fuel is cheaper than biogas, that's why it's not all over country, but that black silo it's good small step for the bigger one
Yay top 498 comments. Love this channel and this series. Happy new year!!!
Compressed storage of the gas would help fix the intermittency problem.
Too complicated for that simple application
And need a lot of energy to compress the biogas.
It's intermittent because they don't have enough biogas, not because they can't store it.
@@imightbebiased9311 The production process fluctuated from time, even we can say it's 24 work hours (shift labor). The gas bag is too small
@@bayisehat9631 you can generate energy from the escaping gas to reduce cost of compression.
This is brilliant!
I'm not sure how the cooking gas distribution works in indonesia but if erratic timings is an issue in households with respect to biogas from tofu, gas cylinders could be a good alternative instead of pipelines... In india, in a number of households gas cylinders are still being used. It might take up a little more time and energy but save the family from the erratic cooking hrs problem and make more people adapt it.
Wow, amazing
1:18 that's the MASTER TOFU MAKER does to make the taste good. He blows his smoke to the tofu to enhance the aroma and smokey flavor. 🤣🤣🤣

Udah sejak lama, tapi kebanyakan di desa haha
@@yogasetiaone ho iyaa? Wadah. saya kudet ternyata
Amazing at least they are are trying to clean waste and dont put that in the rivers
There should be no waste from making tofu. The liquid whey can be used in cooking. The okara can be used in cooking. The initial soaking water can be used for cleaning. In Japan, people would get buckets of soaking water from their corner shop to clean with. I make my own tofu and use everything. Zero waste!
People don’t want everything to smell like rotting soybeans
@@ambiorixdeseburons4939 Then they should make their own tofu and use everything. When you hand your life to a business they go for profits not what you want.

TOFU: *The #1 most used construction material* in Chinese buildings and houses.
This is such fake news, overlord china only uses the cheapest garbage available. Sometimes literal garbage. Tofu is better used making winnie the pooh fatter than ever.
Interesting the number of smokers.
0:55 "in a country that is struggle to provide energy...", really???? We are 99% powered all across the archipelago.
To them Indonesia might as well be an amazonian forest
99 % lol,you can say that if you live in java
Big gas companies are not gonna like this
They don't care. Way too small.
As if big gas companies are interested in small villagesthat have no infrastructure :D
there are no “companies” lol. Only Company, and it’s state-owned 😂
The gas is subsidied by the government, so they will be happy to to reduce the need of subsidied LPG
maybe try promote natto in place of tofu? less work & energy needed, less pollution, probably even less stinky (at least during production;p)
Everyone is eating it! Yet they look down on the people actually making it.
Круто!
tell indonisia this: since everyone poops turn that into biogas while treating using biogas digestr and turning it into ferlizer. all vegetable waste, animal poop can also turned into biogas if people overcome their phobias.
Glad to see their hygiene standards are high with some of their workers smoking cigarettes while preparing the tofu 😔
Would be good if they can extract the whey protein also.
some of the local workers even use their feet to crush the beans 🤣🤣🤣

i feel dumb. i did not know that tofu making factories had that much waste water.
Wow Indosian ,im from Indonesian
Well, it's very impressive what Indonesian scientists have accomplished so far! This is a huge win/win! A win for the environment, and for humans! Now the Indonesian government really has no excuse not to increase this throughout their entire country! I get tired of watching intelligent, productive, responsible people create ways to improve life for the planet and humans, only to have the wealthy and powerful tie it up with bureaucratic nonsense to line their own pockets! Then turn around and blame the rest of humanity for the state of the planet/environment!
1 kilogram of beef meat consumes around 15000 liters of water during the process.. Now think about that :O
so what
There's always one. Ding!
Then why not eat chicken? Or fish? Or insect? In Indonesia we eat more chicken and fish than beef meat because it's expensive, we only eat beef meat during special occasion
Someone is getting extra ash ingredients in their tofu! 😂
Makes me appreciate the FDA and OSHA.
No wonder, Takumi used Tofu for Toyota Trueno AE 86.
Thats explain why AE86 is so good at race. The fuel is from tofu waste.
around the first minute mark we can see a worker with a smoking stub in his mouth ...right above the food :D
thats alot of cockroaches in a stone box wow

They really need better gear for this...
Is there no way to maybe store the biogas into cyclinders for use later
i'd imagine it'd require pump that itself requires a non trivial amount of energy to operate.
Need new technology for compress the gas. Coz the metana from that waste fermentation, have a low pressure.
Try assume a ballon with diametre 2.5 mtr just for 3 hours tandem gas stove.
I had similar project but with Cow poop fermentation.
@@scarletdice Wind mill pumps can be used to compress air or other gases as well. Its a great way to store energy without batteries. It can "pump up the volume" of energy in the bio gas system. Any motor that spins can use the pneumatic energy. You can run pnumatic lines to plug into like electrical lines/ plugs in homes. The pneumatic energy can be stored as compressed gas and the use of gas escaping can turn a pump to compress air to run houshold appliances like blenders or refrigerator compressors to cool foods. You can use pneumatic energy to run cars, or cars to create pneumatic energy to power homes. Coupled with gas motors, you can create excess energy to start, move faster or climb hills.
Water mill pumps can be used to compress air also if water is more available in an area. If you can turn an old washing machine motor, it can create electricity directly. Its as easy to turn a pump to compress air. Either wind or water can compress air very easily. You can buy small pumps that run off drills, "drill pumps" that may work. In America, its called "Yankee ingenuity", the drive to create a better mouse trap!
There is an American Biogas Council now, check out the website. Here in America the projects tend to be very large. Back yard methane production is very good, maybe better than large scale production. Your not moving the materials from the site of use. Compost, manures including human waste and yard/ farm waste can all create methane.
Hydrogen sulphide gas that accompanies methane can potentially create hydrogen gas. Four girls in Africa discovered that urine releases hydrogen using electrolysis and aluminum better than you can release hydrogen gas from water. The chemical bonds are weaker in urea. The same could be true in hydrogen sulphide. Now, hydrogen sulphide is a waste product of methane production. Its what makes methane stink. If it is removed from the methane and the water and utilized, the water would be useful for other purposes. Maybe it can be used for watering plants in a greenhouse or container growing system. The plants would further clean the water of nutrients so it can be returned to the environment.
Indonesia still living in the 1800s thats crazy.
Tofu = organic cheese of Asia

In Filipino saying, tofu wouldn't make it's form if not made in unhygienic process.
that guy smoking while making tofu at 1:16 is very sanitary yup.. nice tofu.. i like tofu.. but this wew.. damn!
Indonesia has a very smoking heavy culture, everyone smokes everywhere, portions of the population even believe its medicine and doesn't cause cancer.
I can eat the tofu directly in the factory. Does not matter. It's cooked
what about cheese production waste?
these bots are annoying af
I love seeing them reply to each other, knowing nobody's getting shit out of it. 🤣
Do they have a sewer system that generate biogas from poop? If yes, they can combine the soybean waste and generate more biogas.
Those hipsters are going to shit themselves when they hear that tofu production also creates water pollution
The only way is to involve the locals. Same in the western world. Small micro climates. Then maybe we could change our environment. No other way.
We in America make and enforce idiotic laws every day yet we can't make laws that go after huge polluters? Let's start REALLY going g after those big polluters and then we may see changes for our continued existence.
