I wouldn't mind the Deebees if they came in smaller chunks, like if the starting city was already taken over by swarm and the deebees were sent in to kill any organics
Just played the campaign for the second time (probably why this video showed up in my recommends) and for sure thought JD was voiced by Nathan Fillion. Was a sound-a-like intentional? Because it even has Nathan's sense of humor, or at least from what I remember in Halo: ODST. Also didn't know the uncle was Jimmy Smits either. Very interesting.
Gears 4 sits alongside Halo 4 and Mass Effect Andromeda, in that it introduces a new villain that is both story and gameplay wise LESS INTERESTING than the previous nemesis.
I absolutely adore the Gears series but this is the only entry that feels like by the time it’s over I was like “that’s it?” It gets better and better over the span of the full game but it at a really slow pace.
I know what you mean. The pacing was terrible in the game. It takes forever to get a Lancer, you fight the robots for too long, and the legacy characters take forever to show to be anything more than glorified cameos. And they were still the most interesting characters.
I think the risk this game takes is in the form of stories and characters. When this game came out, it was a big deal because gears was coming back to life. To have new characters, enemy factions, and such a new story was a risk at the time.
Gears 4 is easily the smallest scale game in the series. It needs to set up a lot, so that's understandable. But just when it gets really good, it does indeed end.
This review pretty much sums up my personal experience with this game. I admit GoW4 does have its fair share of pros, but ultimately it just falls short under the weight of its much more apparent cons. There's just too much crap burying it down: robot enemies that are so boring to shoot, boring defense scenes, bland cast of main characters, and the story which definitely feels too short to leave a notable impression. Not to mention the immense grind for cards, and loot boxes galore. Despite its gorgeous visuals, and somewhat neat gore & enemy dismemberment (personally I feel it lacks those even compared to previous games in the series though), the game lacks the power, the weight, the clunkiness that make Gears click. Roadie run became inadequately fast and weightless, shooting now does less OOMPH (for lack of a better word), the writing & dialogues feel annoying and cringy, and overall it feels empty inside (behind all the flashy stuff I mean). 'All style, no substance' is the best way I could describe GoW4. It's like the Trilogy felt like a proper story of a band of brothers in arms sharing hardships of wartime, and those games masked real impactful drama under the layer of a blockbuster buddy/road movie. There are probably lots of parallels to real life war events of early 2000s I suppose, but I'm not gonna try to dig Gears that much here, I'll leave it to pros instead. And then GoW4 started the trend to feel different just for the sake of feeling different, and nothing else, drifting towards a cheap GoW fanfic, or even a sitcom in a postapoc setting. Then G5 came out, but I won't touch it here, it's even worse than 4 imho.
Great review. I enjoyed the campaign and the new enemies. I thought the robots could have been designed differently and was a real missed opportunity. Horde mode was my favorite part of the Gears franchise and Gears 4 botched that goodwill with the class and card system. I hated being locked out of the characters I liked just because they were attached to a class that I did not care for at all. Gears 3 was the peak of the series for me.
Gears of War 3 had a great, bittersweet ending , but they have to keep milking this IP , so they brought the Locust back. Oh sorry, these are not the Locust, these are the Swarm, completely different thing, right.... In other words, Dom, his wife and all the other people who died in the previous games, did it for nothing. It´s exactly the same BS they pulled with the Star Wars sequels.
I love this gears of war series so much nostalgia! I hope you continue all the way up to gear's tactics which was a game I really liked

I was only able to play Gears Ultimate Edition and 4 and 5 via Game Pass. I really enjoyed each of them, even the risks taken in Gears 5.
Playing Gears 4-5 just makes me want to play Gears 1-3.
This was my first Gears, because of the excellent PC port, including SPLITSCREEN Gamepad + Keyboard and Mouse.
Gears 3 is unsurpassed
16:00 Gears 4 is even more enhanced on PC.
Mostly reflections, depth of field quality and maybe LODs.
Not true, the PC version has no HDR.
Awesome game series love number 5 more than this one however still solid

The campaign felt like a filler episode before the big events. Felt way more invested in Gears 5's story.
Passed on this one and 5 because it’s online only. You can’t even play horde mode unless you’re online.

I agree with 100% of what you said. Thanks for commenting so I don’t have to.

Can you believe there are people who hated the Coalition developed Gears games?
Yes
This comment is for my friend, Al
Im just a sucker for pain!
Worst in the series imo. When playing it I still had fun but also thoughts " I could be playing gears 2 instead"

I personally found Gears 4 to be dull. There were a few decent sections, but for the vast majority of the game I was BORED playing it.
super boring game
gears 4 was ok, i didn't like gears 5 all that much
The story isn’t very good but the gameplay is great. Leagues better than the travesty that is gears 5
