Just heard his mom passed away. From someone who also grew up with a difficult relationship with his mother and an absent father, this song speaks volumes. Sometimes, it's hard to forgive our parents, but those are the ones we had placed before us. Some of us out there are the product of our parents generational trauma.

The grief you feel after losing a parent that you had a complicated relationship with is different than other grief. The loss of who they were, who you hoped they'd be, who you needed them to be, who they'll never be. This song perfectly expressed some of the complicated feelings I have about my mom, it was released after she was gone.
I've often wondered what this loss will bring for Marshall. There will be battles fought between him and the other personas he carries in his head as he tries to process the anger, the pain, the guilt, the sadness, and even the relief that comes as you no longer wait for this phone call. I hope he has strong support during this time and is gentle with himself.

Thank you for those words…😢…I’m a shitty complicated relationship mom that my kids ignore…my kids didn’t come with a manual…I had them before I even knew I had shit I needed to heal and so I forced them to ride on that whole healing journey that was pretty fucked up most of the time…

I grew up in an abusive household. Getting over it, forgiving, and finding common ground so I can be in the same room as my mom is something I'm constantly working on. She's better now, and I'm still healing but it has to be done. The cycle has to stop. All the pride and guilt has to be swallowed by someone else I'll pass it along. My mom was abused too, and passed it down to me, and it stops with me. No guilt shaming, no more pain added, it's no ones "fault" it's just this shitty world we live in. Deep down I want to love her more than anything but it is hard. If you have a good mom, love her with everything you have, because being a parent isn't easy. Lot's of moving parts and what not. I'm trying

@@kellyhenry2875 Give them time. I don't know the details and those are personal so I don't want to know, but it's hard for us too. It just takes two people being strong and allowing time. The older I get the more I understand, and the more I forgive. I wish the best for you for you and your child. Just know it's confusing for us growing up and sometimes everything gets so short circuited that the kid just can't make sense of it. Time and patience wins the battle.

My brother killed himself when I was little and my mom became an alcoholic. She couldn't cope. I used to get so mad at her and listened to Cleaning Out My Closet on repeat to piss her off. I grew up, I realized what she went through was one of the hardest things a mother could endure and I found myself appreciating her in a new way. She died from the alcoholism, I had to take her off of life support. I kissed her forehead as she died in my arms and all I could hear was this song in my head. I lost my dad last year, he got murdered. I found myself wanting my mama and looking for her strength. She wasn't here but I found that strength because of the love she gave me when she was here. I love you mama. Rest in peace💕

You don't grow up with parents like this and sort it out. You can reach a point of seeing them for who they are and accepting that person did the best they could with what they had but it doesn't get sorted out or resolved. With every passing day, with every new life event, there is more trauma added and pain to sort through later. The things to forgive them and yourself for only stops amassing after their death. I understand your sentiment, it just isn't the reality of how these things work.

Even the fact that this was shot from the perspective of his mother shows his intentions even before hearing the lyrics fully. I’m proud of him for this. It’s easier to be mad and find more reasons to be than to forgive and be open to change. It goes both ways though. Both people need to be willing. This song will always be one of my top favorite songs because of how much I relate to it. I listen to cleaning out my closet and this one in order and it’s actually helped a ton. As someone whose not good with expressing their emotions through words and just analyzes them instead, I feel heard and like my emotions are being brought to light. Thank you, Marshall for all you’ve done and continue to do. Forever GOAT.

This song is really beautiful tbh. In this song he's apologizing to his mom for "cleaning out my closet" but you have to understand his mom had a drug problem and pushed all of her anger on her young son. When he wrote that song he was filled with rage. Now in her later years he knows what kind of mother she was but he realized what she was going through a single mom with a drug addiction. He feels guilty for making that song but I understand why he did it. He's so sad to see his mom finally wearing away. He does love her and this song is so nice.

I used to relate so much to his songs and feel like he was speaking for me, so to hear this and see that no matter how rough I thought it was, there's always hope for a loving family, it just hits too hard.. you gotta really understand the Marshall Mathers story to realize just how significant this song is. I'm really happy he made this for not only himself and his mother, but for all those who had strained relationships with their parents growing up.

After a rough divorce between my parents I grew to hate my mom when I was 14 because she left my father. I'd try so hard to skip weekends with her and when she confronted me about why I wouldn't show I threw excuses at her and she'd call me and we had arguments over the phone for hours leaving us both in tears. When this song came out i knew about cleaning out my closet and was exposed to how rough Em's childhood was and for him to disregard that track meant everything. This song helped me find closure with myself and my mom. I cry every time I hear this

I deeply relate to Eminem because I came from a broken home, I resented my mom for the longest and it wasn’t until I was an adult that I realized how sick my mom was, this song makes me cry because I feel the same as Eminem, I had the same feelings he had when he made “Cleanin out my closet” because it reflected how I felt at the time about my mom, what just made me become a sobbing mess is when he says
“And I'm way too old to cry, the shit is painful though
But, Ma, I forgive you, so does Nathan, yo
All you did, all you said, you did your best to raise us both
Foster care, that cross you bear, few may be as heavy as yours
But I love you, Debbie Mathers”
    And
“And I'm mad I didn't get the chance to,
Thank you for being my mom and dad”
I’ve never related to lyrics as much as these.
I regret the horrible things I’ve said to her and learned to forgive despite the pain that was caused, now I’m loving her from afar, we are not close now in anyway but every time she acts out I just remember that she’s sick and can’t control her own actions like a normal person can

I completely understand you. My childhood was garbage and I was wonder everyday why I was born in family like that. My family is toxic toward me and i am nothing but a black sheep for them. And it makes me sick everytime when I hear these words such as "i love you" or "you are everything for us" or "you are nothing but a delusional bully". I was getting sick of this. I felt broken after my mom passed away and my ex girlfriend ditched me away. I didn't even want to celebrate holidays but afterwards I went because after all i am part of that garbage family being raised by drinkers, gossipers and father which i dislike his hypocrisy because he did something good. I am almost 20 studying hard in the university of my dreams and fighting for a happy and productive life.

The point being is that my mother is in a abusive relationship where she was brainwashed from an abusive peice of shit boyfriend, first hand have experienced that. Forgiving someone who hurt you, with or without them knowing this, forgiving will humble you and it's so much better than carrying hate and discontent. Life is challenging for everyone. I'm happy for your growth in this matter. When I heard this song the first time, my little girl played it.She said "Mom have you heard this song by Eminem? Listen to it " We were 3 deep standing in the dining room cleaning up after eating and the girls put that sing on and alot like all of the others felt my eyes started welling up with tears.bI was trying my best to hold back, that's how I am, don't cry ever unless you're alone. I stopped moving so did the girls like time stood still , listened I the whole song. This is kinda where the story began. Idk how to explain it, I'm happy Eminem finally found peace from his experience. God bless you all and may you broken pieces start mending you ♥️😘🖤🖤@brandy top fan Eminem
