    You hit it perfectly when you talked about weather - a lot of people don’t consider this, or just take ideal condition track reviews at face value without thinking of their daily conditions.
    I just sold my FL5 for an RS3 because it rains half of the year where I live. The FL5 is fun in the summer but totally boring when there’s any kind of weather, especially because the engine/exhaust sounds like nothing.
    The biggest problem with the GR Corolla IMO is the interior space. I think some of the dynamic problems could be overlooked if it was more practical.

    • @Zygrene
      @Zygrene  3 місяці тому +3

      Agreed. If the GR Corolla had another 2 inches of rear leg room and 2-3 inches of trunk depth, it would be a lot more appealing as a do-it-all vehicle.

    GRC all day long - I got annoyed with torque steer, bored & simply got tired of a fast FWD car!
    If you actually go on long road trips in the mountain - weather will happen - an AWD car is more practical. If you stay in Cali - knock yourself out.
    I like the look of a hot hatch - the S & type R read & look like a sedan
    If you need a bigger car buy an fn bigger car. The S & R are too big more my liking. I would have prefered a GR Yaris - but we don't get them here. So GRC it is.
    $10k will buy you a sh*t ton of mods a/w sorting out what should get done, installing the part & taking pleasue in a job well done.

    2022 Hyundai Elantra N (Stock)
    2023 GR Corolla (Core w/ Springs, Intake, Short Shifter)

    The Type-S from a luxury, comfort, livability, practicality, power, shifter feel, and handling dynamic is leaps and bounds the best amongst these. I still think the Focus & Fiesta ST are the next best FWD Hot Hatches that you can get that come close to the fun of a Type-S / Type-R. Ended up getting an ND3 MX5. I liked the GRC but the interior was terrible. The ND3 feels much more higher end for slightly less, has more aluminum, double wishbones, convertible...feels like a much more expensive car. I also enjoyed the 86 more vs the GRC, the GRC is not linear to drive (throttle, turn in, etc). The 86 to me was a much better driving experience.

    • @dannyphamous
      @dannyphamous 3 місяці тому +8

      Similar feelings here. Wanted to love the GRC, was following it since first announcement, but wasn't raw or RWD enough for me. Mark ups and interior was a turn off. I would be very open to a GR Yaris if that was available.

      You have to spend a lot more money to get something more fun than an ND2/3 Miata and even then it’s likely going to be too much car for the street.
      S2K is the only car that comes close but prices are really high, even clean ones will need some major maintenance, and it’s a worse daily driver in pretty much every way. More fun weekend car though. I wish Honda would give us another one….

  • @abikepeddler
    @abikepeddler 3 місяці тому +7

    I agree that the Honda product is better built and, by all accounts offers superior overall handling but in the end none of that matters. Front wheel drive just ruins what could have otherwise been a spectacular offering. I've owned 180 cars including more than two dozen many front wheel drivers. Every one of them had the same limitation... driving the wrong wheels. When it comes to fun, it really has to be rear wheel drive. This is where the Corolla also fails because most AWD cars also have their own limitations, in most cases they tend to understeer at the limit or have so much grip and capability that you really can't deploy it on public streets. So even AWD isn't ideal from a "fun" factor. I say this from experience . I currently own 7 enthusiast cars covering the drivetrain gamut. Mid-engine, RWD (Renault R5 Turbo, Lister Bell Lancia Stratos, Toyota MR2 supercharged) rear engine, RWD (67' VW Beetle 2.0L) and front engine, FWD (Nissan B13 Sentra SE-R). In terms of fun, the Nissan is last. Sure it's fun for FWD, But that's like saying your Diesel powered food blender is "the best". It's still powered by diesel. It's limitations are too great. So for that reason the Honda loses this battle for me every time. Plus, unlike the Honda, the GR Corolla is handmade in the Motomitchu plant in Japan, the same specialty plant that created the Lexus LFA. The employees that build the GR Corolla and GR Yaris are required to have 30,000 hours of past employment with Toyota to even work in this plant. Heck, the carbon roof panel is hand laid and a direct descendant of the Lexus LFA program and cost $15,000 US at your local Toyota parts department. In terms of which car is more rare, special and unique, there is no comparison. The GR Corolla is truly rare in this day and age of production line fodder. And while the Honda product is outstanding, it is much more of a production line car, not the low production, hand built offering of cars like the GR Corolla. The GR Corolla has direct lineage to the World champion winning WRC Toyota GR Yaris. When you drive a GR Corolla with that knowledge it gives it a different feel. Understanding what went into its creation changes it dynamically. But most reviewers of these cars do not even know the backstory. There's really nothing on the market to compare the GR Yaris and or GR Corolla to because no other manufacturer is currently offering a true homologated rally car to the public.

  • @not12listen

    The GR Corolla is not a perfect car by any stretch. Admittedly, that is one of the things that I truly like about it. It would be near perfect if it was mid-engine and had a small V6 without boost.
    We GR Corolla owners have room to make adjustments to it so that it suits my driving style - there is a story here.
    I used to own an AW11. They're notoriously difficult to drive at speed. You have to learn the balance of that car, but once you do, it is absolute magic.
    Toyota creates a car that is 'good' and gives you a canvas to create your own art. I developed my own alignment settings for my AW11 (along with heavy suspension modifications) and I would outpace cars with 3 times the power on canyon drives (I was still on a stock 4AGE).
    I have no doubt at all that once I really start digging into my GR Corolla, I will develop a comfort with it (with personalized suspension tuning) that will make it sublime to me and something that others will not want to try to keep up with.
    Beyond that, your Integra (as you stated) has more than 4 degrees of negative camber at the front. The GR Corolla cannot do that in stock form. That is an apples to lemons comparison by itself, let alone the tire width difference. Then we get into displacement.... 1.6 VS 2.0 doesn't sound like a lot, but it is, which impacts acceleration out of turns and turbo spool up as well.
    I'm not making excuses for the GR Corolla - just detailing that with a smaller displacement engine turbo lag will be more obvious.
    Anywho.... If I still had it, I would love for you to drive my former AW11 (2.0L NA swap), and hear your response of that... But, realistically, give me 12 months and I will have my GR Corolla dialed in. I would love to hear your impressions of a custom tuned GR Corolla at that time.

    It was louder than I expected, and for a Corolla its very stiff - try adjusting the radio with that tiny knob on anything but a perfect surface and you hit the touch screen taking you all over. Its got great grip and you can really throw it at corners, though I'm still not used to the shifting - its just kinda weird. Brakes are great, even on track. If not, its driver error no doubt. You really need to keep the revs up to keep the party going. There's not much tuning overhead and the body is quite noisy compared to the competition. Golf R/S3 a more polished AWD option, especially tuned as the 'Dub makes lots of power with a tune and the new ones have torque vectoring rear. I had a tuned S3 which was a weapon, but the Corolla wins with a manual transmission. Honda are the most precise machines to drive, the Corolla the most fun to thrash around, and the VW/Audi (tuned) are stoplight drags champs and easy 11 sec. quarter mile. I just can't do FWD anymore - just can't put down the power when tuned though I really like the interior of the Acura. - PS, you need to consider tuning of springs/shocks and especially swaybars - shouldn't need that much camber.
