    Amazing discussion here I can relate to so much! I know how anxious I get by having lots of incomplete series so I've tried hard to binge and complete things when I'm having a good time -- but even so I still have 21 series I'm in the middle of with more books that are out and in my possession. I am getting inspired to do an inventory and prioritizing them so I can be intentional about continuing the ones I really want to!
    I've been pretty disciplined about reading just one book at a time, which absolutely maximizes my experience with each book, allowing me to be immersed in just one setting and plot and set of characters. I'm thrilled to see you moving in that direction since I know it will pay off hugely!

      Thank you! Honestly the catalyst for all of these honing in on my reading life changes stemmed from some of our discussions about the joy of immersing into single series several months ago. I'm really excited about the progress I've made and hope I can whittle down the unfinished pile I've created for myself. I need a challenge for this haha.
      Doing an inventory and then prioritizing sounds like a great idea. It's always good to check in with where you're at now and what would help you going forward. Hey! That could be a vid idea. :D Maybe I'll do one - here are all of my poor choices laid out. Let's choose! haha

    I honestly don't stress over it :) I can be a bit of a mood reader but there are authors who are autobuys and I will binge their books (Ilona Andrews and Patricia Briggs for example) other that I enjoy and other series that I just lost interest in after a few books even though I enjoyed them (Hollows and Kitty Norville), And ones that aggravated me so much that so far they are on the DNF list (looking at you Dresden Files). I never really tracked series that I read and given how many purges I have done over space I am not much of a collector. I think there now are only a few series that I have physical books for now as I primarily read digitally. Read what you enjoy, if a series new release isn't sparking anticipation maybe it's a good library series vs. purchase.

      It sounds like you’ve got that perfect balance for reading that I’m trying to achieve. It bothers me not knowing exactly what I haven’t finished yet and knowing stresses me because I feel anxious about what I haven’t gotten back to yet. The only think I DO do now (I just wrote do do) is make sure I make time for those amazing author auto-buys. Andrews and Briggs are on that list for me too!

    If I was a less picky reader, my tbr would be so huge. My tbr is already really big, and I don’t need it to be any bigger. I’d rather be a picky reader, because there just isn’t enough time to read every single book that I’m interested in. So I pick and choose and then read as much as I can to have as much fun as I can. If I’m not loving a book, I stop reading and go find a better book.

    • @TheObsessiveBookseller

      That’s so good. It took me years and years to get to that point and it sounds like you’re doing it naturally. Yeah even my conservative high priority list is ridiculous haha.

    Hi Niki. I am fairly new to DNFing a book, i used to power through with gritted teeth, and I still do from time to time. It's like, I'm not going to let this sh1tty book win, i shall vanquish it! It's a development opportunity for me... No room in my life for books that don't give me joy. Well, it's probably not that black and white, i do loke to explore the back list and some books are important from a genre point of view. But as a general principle, as you say, life's too short and getting shorter!

    • @SciFiScavenger

      I'm managing two books in parallel. One physical, one audio. They feel sufficiently separate to do that, but in general I'm a serial reader.

    • @TheObsessiveBookseller
      @TheObsessiveBookseller  4 місяці тому +1

      I wish I could become more of a serial reader. I'm working towards it, but have a lot of series to wrap up first. I'm with you on the important work thing - I'll continue those just to experience them, even if they're not particularly "fun." All the ones I've been stubborn on finishing, I always end up 5xs more hostile at them by the time I'm done haha.

    I can relate to so much of this. I want to take my time and focus on what I'm reading and really savor it instead of feeling like I'm in a race to get through my list. One thing that doesn't help are all the buddy reads I've signed up for. I really need to quit buddy reading so much. I'm just not enjoying it that much any more, especially when I get left in the dust by most of the other readers because they are reading insanely fast. I miss a lot of the other people in FBR that aren't around anymore that I used to buddy read with that read at my pace. I also think I need to not participate in the Team Reading Challenge next year. It also makes me feel like I'm in a race to read everything. The hard part is that I enjoy participating in it even though I feel that way. What a weird conundrum. As for the incomplete series challenge, I still enjoy doing that. Making an on hold list helped me to not read things I don't feel like reading at this time. Kind of like your priority list. Thankfully I don't have a problem DNFing things I'm not enjoying. My DNF list is miles long! 😂

    • @TheObsessiveBookseller
      @TheObsessiveBookseller  4 місяці тому +1

      Yeah haha I remember you being brutal when it comes to tossing out books that weren’t working for you! I know what you mean. All the challenges are so fun, but they put this extra pressure on that wouldn’t be there without them. BR are tricky for me too. I remember back in the day when FBR was still kind of new how much fun it was to read stuff together.
      Speaking of buddy reads, I was trying to read that arc of the prequel books for Martha Wells and set it aside, I thought for a couple weeks, but I think I’m officially DNFing it. So that messes up my plans to continue on with you! Sorry to leave you hanging with that. Maybe we could collaborate on a different series?

      @@TheObsessiveBookseller It's ok. That book was slow at times. I thought it started out great though. I loved the way all the statues came to life and were attacking him! I wish the whole book had been that good. I can read the other book on my own, but I'm not feeling compelled to read it right now anyway. I would be good with collaborating on a different series. I'll have to see which ones we both want to read.

      Haha it's nice that someone can relate. I've been spending a lot of spare brain power lately trying to figure out how to solve these reading woes. Trying to get myself back to more simplicity (fewer series), tuning into what I actually want to read that day instead of what I "should" read, and honestly, consuming less booktube content and spending less time looking at my unread books. They're starting points, anyway. But I want reading to be mindlessly fun again!

    Really great video. So many elements to unpack and to reflect about my reading journey so far. Yes, if I am all " wow" after the first book and want second book asap than it is "best book for me".
    But what if I started a book that is so so good till chapter 16 and that is gets... less... 😮‍💨 the question remains if I am to drop it or finish it? Maybe it gets better later? Such a tricky one.
    I am allways in AVE wenn you say a nummber of your open or ongoing series...
    I still can't wrap mine mind around it...🤔 o wait I did it 😮 I have 4 that need to be finished 😵‍💫

    Why not embrace the stress of too many good books to read, and transmogrify that negative energy into a virtual lifestyle trainer: yes it is important to eat right and exercise so’s I can live long and take care of my family and pets and yadda yadda… BUT. The real reason to hit the gym and get jacked is that I will have more wick at the end of life’s candle with which to crush that bottomless TBR.
