This is awesome! Commander Stumpf was the Executive Officer of my first squadron VFA 83. He became our Commanding Officer after the Gulf War, and is a great guy. Some of my best memories are from running around the flight line and launching our planes at NAS Cecil Field and many other airfields as 19 year old kid. Working the flight deck brought it to a whole new level, and seeing those guys land on the ship day after day was totally amazing! It never got old. I actually had the honor of launching CDR Stumpf many times and I will never forget one day the flight schedule had one flight on it which said, "Demo Flight." I asked one of the Chiefs in maintenance control "What's that?" He simply said, "you'll see." I took the flight as the plane captain and launched CDR Stumpf that day. What he did over our airfield was like our own private air show. I think it may have been his audition for the Blue Angels. I got orders to Electricians Mate training and left that squadron. I heard later that CDR Stumpf became the CO of the Blue Angels and I was very happy for him, but I never got to see them perform. Those were some of the best days of my life! Thank you for the memories if you see this CDR Stumpf!

Such an amazing video showing the entirety of an airshow from the lead pilot's point of view is just brilliant, and jaw-dropping in their precision, professionalism, and pursuit of aviation excellence. I wanted to be one of them when I was a child growing up in San Diego, not far from Miramar Naval Air Station or their Winter home in El Centro, California. Seeing the Blue Angels fly over San Diego Bay, and then later in high school when we moved up to the SF Bay Area, seeing the Blue Angels perform over the San Francisco Bay during Fleet Week, flying directly over my house near Moffett Field in Mountain View was just spectacular! I'll never forget seeing them fly right over my roof and the feeling of the whole house shake as they flew over! Truly breathtaking!!

I'm just constantly amazed at these guys and how they handle 6 to 7G's like it's nothing. I know that's one of the qualifications is a high g tolerance. It's still amazing to see. Plus communicating under those stresses. Ryan if you ever get the chance, watch practice from Fort Pickens. It's kinda of a behind the scenes look at all of the "set-ups" that you don't see from the show line. You won't be disappointed I promise. We've been fortunate to watch practice from show-line, lighthouse and Fort Pickens and it never gets old.

Used to watch them as a kid at Moffett field when they still did airshows there back in the late 80's / 90s and had bleachers setup on the runway. Back then they did the mach 1 pass so close to you that the 55 gallon drum "garbage cans" had to be tied down because the concussion wave from the sonic boom would knock everything over. I'm fortunate to have those memories, I don't know of any airshows that allow anything that close and personal these days for safety purposes. You can't even explain to someone what it's like to see a Hornet fly past the speed of sound silently not more than 50 feet from you before the sound catches up.

If you want brevity, look up some of the Canadian Snowbird videos. They don't make power or stick calls because it's all flown visually. All they call is smoke on/off and next formation. The Solos call "contact" on the head-on passes, but that's about it. I believe they're the only team in the world to fly like that.

@@TheSeanBampton Actually, the Boss does make stick calls, such as "tightening" and "relaxing", "rolling out" as well as power calls "powering back/up". The Boss will also call turns, but just "turning right/left." For each maneuver, the Boss will call for example....."running in the Big Diamond Combo....5 through 9 smoke now......three back, two back, one back, pulling up, powering back, rolling, tightening, powering up, continuing, relaxing, smoke off now". The Big Diamond Combo is a formation roll followed immediately by a loop. So the Boss does make a few voice calls over the radio.....not as much comm as the Blues here, but what the Boss does call, it very brief. As for the solos, the Lead Solo will call "smoke now, running in the (insert maneuver here) roll/turn/split now, smoke off now", for maneuvers.
Here's a video from about four years ago. This is basically "the opener" sequence, with all of the comms from the Boss.

It was the entire show from climb into the jet til climb out after shutdown. All comms included. I rented it from Blockbuster video and regret that I took it back! After his time as Boss, he had been picked to go take over a Carrier Air Wing. During the "witch hunt" according to what I have read he was suspended as Blue Angels Boss but cleared by the Navy and returned. Still, some Senators wanted a scalp so they stopped his promotion and as a result, he was forced to retire. The frickin Navy did the same dang thing to The Skipper of the USS Cole. A Virginia senator stopped his promotion so he could look good. Neither of these men did anything wrong!

Why, in 2021, are fighter comms radios like cheap walkie talkies ?????? They just sound AWFUL. Comm radios in GA aircraft using iPhones or GoPros sound fantastic.
The fighter radios crackle pop and sound like humazoos/paper combs.
    Why????

Amplitude modulation. AM radio. Same radios are in use today.
