Natural Disaster For the most part, there isn't anywhere in the world like it! This is probably the largest abandoned area by far. The 2 closest areas to compare to this in their desolation and area, would have to be Fukishima, Japan , which was abadoned following the earthquake, and the resulting reactor meltdown in 2011, and Varosha, Cypress, which was abandoned in 1974 following a Turkish Military occupation and mass slaughter. The UN declared the town a "No Man's land", and trespassing there, you risk getting killed by Turkish authorities who are stationed at the border. This happened the year after I graduated high school. I recall it then of course, but there wasn't a lot of information on it in those years. The HBO Chernobyl series gave me a renewed interest in this event, as it likely did with others. If you've sufficiently educated yourself on what happened at Chernobyl, it should scare the shit out of you. What COULD have happened there, had the reactor never been capped off, is nightmarish.
