- In this video, we show you how to migrate Home Assistant to another computer
This can save you a lot of time compared to building a new instance from scratch

Overview:
We'll backup Home Assistant on our original computer and then restore that backup onto another one
You do still have to install a fresh copy of Home Assistant onto the new computer, but this still saves us a lot of time
Build New Computer:
First install Home Assistant onto a new computer
All you need to do is to complete the initial installation and on boarding Wizard though so that you can then login and perform a restore
NOTE: The new computer needs to have a different IP address, at least to begin with, as you can't have two computers on the same network with the same IP address
Also, make sure both computers are up to date, or at least running the same version of Home Assistant, Core and Supervisor if necessary, otherwise we could run into incompatibility problems
Backup Original Computer:
On the original computer we need to take a backup of Home Assistant
But first try to make sure everything looks to be working
If you don't check you might spot a problem on the new computer, not realise this problem was always there and then try and revert back to the original computer, which just wastes time
To take a backup, navigate to Settings | System and then select Backups
Now click Create Backup
Provide a name for this backup then click Create and it will backup Home Assistant and store the file on the local storage
Once finished, click the backup file, then select the Menu option in the lower right
From that select Download backup
Pay attention to where this file gets saved to as you'll need it shortly
Now shut down Home Assistant so you can use its IP address
This is especially important if you're using the MQTT broker for instance and/or have firewall rules set up for this IP address
Restore Onto New Computer:
Update the new computer with the IP address of the original computer
If you're using adaptors and/or controllers in Home Assistant you'll also want to transfer these over to the new computer
Now restore the backup onto this computer
Navigate to Settings | System and then select Backups
Click the menu in the top right corner and select Upload backup
Point Home Assistant to where the backup file is and double click on the file
Click the Restore button and then click Restore again to confirm
Wait for the restore to complete then reboot the computer for good measure
Now double check everything is working as expected
TIP: Moving the IP address can result in IP devices not connecting for a while. This is because the MAC address is different and it might take 5 minutes for instance for their cache to clear and then they will connect to the new computer

Once again a Great video, good methodical approach and not rushed. Very informative and exactly what I needed
Good to know the video was helpful
Thanks for the feedback
I know this is an older video, but I can explain why integrations were slow to come back. Even though you changed the new HA to the same IP as the old HA, the network interface has a different hardware MAC address. You either have to wait a bit for the devices to learn the new MAC address of HA or remove those devices. Thanks for the video. I'll be migrating my HA from a small PC into a VM.
Thanks for sharing
Most devices send out a gratuitous ARP, so a MAC address change should be quick
But I've never looked into too much detail as to what HA and in this case Debian were getting up to
Great video! I was specifically watching for the Zigbee and Z-Wave part. I was thinking I would need to have separate backups for these. I guess because you're using the same usb sticks with the old and new this isn't necessary. I'm outgrowing my Raspberry Pi 4 and thinking about upgrading to a Dell thin client.
Yeah, it made sense for me to stick with the same controllers rather than buy new ones
Not sure if the Z-Stick still saves devices in its own storage, but it saves quite a bit of money anyway
I have to admire the options HA gives you for platforms to run this on
With your typical vendor it's oops, we can't continue using the hardware you bought from us, throw whatever you bought from us in the recycling bin and buy our latest proprietary hardware to keep getting support
With HA you can run it on pretty much anything and migrate from one platform to another
Thanks for the video: very educational :) . I am going to migrate from a raspberry Pi4 to the Odroid N2. And I was also very curious about when you would plug the Zigbee stick into the new computer? Is that before you do the restore of the back up or after? And how do you make sure the ordering of the USB devices is exactly the same?
Thanks for informing me and keep up the good work!! :)
I transferred the controllers across after I'd shut the original one down
I then changed the IP address of the new computer and then rebooted it to make sure it was ready
After that I did the restore
USB device ordering can be tricky when moving from one computer to another
You could check in HA though if they're the right way round by going to Settings | Hardware then clicking All Hardware
Feel free to filter things out by typing tty into the search field
Thanks a lot for explaining. I will try later this week.
Would it cause any issues if you Restore from backup during the setup process?
Currently migrating from a Raspberry PI 4 to a Intel N100 based system [Minisforum UN100C]
Can't say I've tried as you need a way to restore from backup
And I haven't looked into what gets backed up and what needs overwriting
So I just do a clean install process on the new machine and then do a restore
@@TechTutorialsDavidMcKone AAHH, Currently trying it trough a Restore during startup.
if this fails, I can always wipe the disk, and redo the install. its not like I am Killing off my PI straight away. or it will cause any issues with my other Hass setup.
