    As a 61 year old regular hiker I appreciate all of your tips. I also love the GC, and have done the R2R and R2R2R in 2022 and 2023 respectively. I mostly find my solace by hiking trails outside Seattle. Wishing you safe hiking and good health for many many years.

      @RationalTalk  8 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for your comment and thanks so much for watching. Do you do your R2R2R non-stop? I always wanted to try, but I think as the years go by, that is more and more unlikely. But, I will be out there again in the Spring and Fall doing a R3 with an overnight in-between. Beautiful country up there around Seattle.

    I admire your philosophy (and envy the wide open spaces and wilderness that you can enjoy). I turn 62 next month, and today was my first time back in the hills after a mishap on a Welsh mountainside almost a year ago. I intend to put your tips to good use, especially the early starts, and "Watch every step". Furthermore, I used to scoff at hiking poles, but now I think they are essential. Thank you.

    • @RationalTalk

      I wish you all the best getting back on the trail. It seems as the years pass the injuries linger longer--which makes the hiking poles even more essential to me. Happy hiking to you!

    I remember struggling up the mountain while a gentleman who was much older than me (my guess is 60s-70s) casually walking up with his hands behind his back. Didn’t seem like he was going very fast but he had me beat! I was so impressed. I’m probably still much slower than him even now, lol. And I totally agree with the nothing new rule.

    • @RationalTalk
      @RationalTalk  8 місяців тому

      Thanks. I think for me where it really slows down is going downhill. I can't jump down the steps, but have to go very carefully. To some degree, like the guy you saw, I make up for it going uphill. But overall, I am just happy to be out there. Thanks for watching.

      @@RationalTalkI’m the opposite. While I hate going uphill, it’s still much easier on my knees. I have a torn meniscus in both knees, planters fasciitis on one foot and a host of other joint problems so both up and down are hard but down is worse. Not gonna let this stop me from getting outside of course. R2R is on my bucket list. Can’t wait and thanks for all the good info! Great channel! ❤❤❤

    Approaching 70 and section hike AT every spring as a test to see how I am aging, did 11 miles a day last year, going again next month. I am like an old car, got a lot of miles on me, occasionally something breaks, my "Check Engine" light is always on, figure the way I'll die is broken down and abandoned on the side of the road.

    The dinosaur syndrome isn’t what you think. It isn’t an age thing. If someone is in front of you and they see someone approaching (regardless of who) they rush and start moving. It isn’t everyone but a certain segment of society. What I love about that is I am a pretty fast hiker and they rush to keep in front of me but they have to keep that pace up and they invariably fail and fall by the wayside. I find it hilarious, happens every hike. If I am running people will generally give up and not rush in front of me but if I am in hiker garb and walking they rush to do so.
    The invisibility thing is real, happens pretty young for males, especially solo ones on the trail.

    • @RationalTalk
      @RationalTalk  3 місяці тому +1

      LOL. Thanks for that perspective. I must admit sometimes I have fun with dinosaur syndrome on the uphill, particularly when steroid users jump in front, because I find they usually cannot keep a decent pace. Then they get to see their grandpa blowing by them. Silly fun on the trial. Thanks for sharing that this happens to younger hikers too.

  • @z0uLess
    @z0uLess 9 місяців тому +1

    7:48 the invisibility in general as I grow older seem to irritate those aspects of my personality which are mildly narcissistic ... I suppose I have to relate to this as "growing pains"

    Oh I’m going to comment and I’m only at 12:05. Hey Grandpa where’s your water fool? I’m older than you and though I have fun with my experience I ain’t stupid and I am just happy I have a full head of hair and won’t colour it for fear I might loose me hair! I decided to use a proper walking staff right from Ireland. If you dress properly and add a bit of being “ different “ it helps. Plus on a stream or river crossing walking dual sticks are a fall in the water. Man so many mistakes…I wish I had a camera person to carry my kit hint! Unless the younger generation talks to you first….just leave them alone. They do NOT want to normally want to know the history of the land and IF they did they would Google the place or hire someone.
    I have been traveling the world and if you feel bad about using hiking sticks…sucks to be you. I use a Black Thorn walking staff it adds to the youth either thinking I’m lost in the wrong country or they sometimes ask questions.
    Guess what OLD fart! I could leopard crawl the Grand Canyon IF some payed a fool carried all me kit!
    I know my limits, I am not an SAS elite soldier and have not been one since 1985, my mind learned my limitations and gives me a fear sensation when the mind knows what the body can not do. Yes I do trails that will leave you dead..but I carry my own water, shelter and food. And honestly I mainly bace camp and spur out from there.
    You are as dangerous as these wanna be Bush wisdom people and the military prepared folks. Show the truth!

    • @RationalTalk
      @RationalTalk  6 місяців тому

      Thanks for your comment. There is a bit of movie making here, the pack distorts the sound, so I try to take it off when I make a recording. I also use a shared pack. On this trail there are treated water sources and I generally carry 4 or 5 liters (depending on the heat) for two hikers on a 7.5 mile (12 km) stretch between water sources.
      I do dye my hair and I even made a video explaining why, but no one watched it, so I deleted it.
      Congratulations to you on your world-wide adventures and thank you for sharing your perceptions.
      I strive to be as honest and helpful as I can be. I make about a penny a day on these videos, so there is no commercial motivation to provide an image that is incorrect, but we are all entitled to our own opinions and approaches. Thank you for your comment.
