Japanese Strats are always excellent. Anybody that’s a little nervous about getting one like this shipped from Japan can always consider one of the 80s Squiers that were made in Japan. I have two of them and they are very well-made guitars that played great and sound great.
I still have my made in Japan Strat that I bought in 1984. Through the years I realized how well it was made , and out of the 10 guitars I have, it is one of my favorites to play..
I’ve got a Tele-style from Harley Benton that I once accidentally dropped on my face. It’s made of basswood. Believe me. You wouldn’t know the difference at that moment.
I have the TE-20 and good god they’re so cheap and good. I payed 80 bucks US for it and it literally sounds and feels so killer for that price. It beats any squier
I got a Japanese strat in 1994, it was literally a chance purchase. I didn’t look at where it was made. Same lake placid blue finish. A guy was selling it to a guitar shop in london, I heard it from the street and came in to see what it was as it sounded amazing. The shop offered him 120 pounds for it. I told him give you 150 and the shop guy said I’ll match that. So just said is 200 ok? He went yup deal done. My son plays it at the moment both of us think it is the best Strat we have ever played. Better than any custom shop. Only difference is mine has a maple neck. One the best guitars I have ever bought. Still not as good as my 1971 law suit SG with P90s bought new even though I could of had a fender or Gibson. I still have gibsons and a fender but the Strat and SG I still reach for first before the expensive stuff. Nice video thanks.

I played one of those... if I didn't make a deal with my cousin for his 80s MIJ Squier Stratocaster.. I'd definitely bought the 50's Classic Vibe Stratocaster there was a used one locally for $300 .. ✌🍄👍
I'm living in japan currently, and I've got a Traditional 60's Mustang and a 93' ST-57 Reissue Strat. They both blow any Mexican and American made in the same price range out of the water.
The blue with the rosewood is killer. Early 2000’s, Fender Standard line had a color called Agave Blue available with a dark rosewood fretboard. It was the most beautiful guitar I ever owned. They really need to bring that color back. It’s nicer than the Lake Placid blue.
Altho Lake Placid Blue is my personal fave, Agave is right up there too. I bought my Nephew a 2004 Agave/Rosewood Stratocaster for his first guitar, he still has it, and it looks stunning. Another great color they had back then is Sage Green, gorgeous! They should bring those back.
I us3d a Japenese 52 telecaster with the "Texas special" pick-ups for years and now that I listen to the recordings of a band I used it in it sounded excellent with a Marshall 50w 2x12 combo, I wish I still had it as it was one of the best.
Why'd you part with it? I made a mistake and sold a guitar once, I'll never make THAT mistake again!🤣 Seriously, I sold a 72 Tobacco burst LP Standard in 1991. It was in really good shape, but I always wanted a Cherry Burst, but never got one of those either. Sold it for $650. Can't imagine what it's worth today.
I had a pal who needed help and so it ended up getting sold to a store in London. You only miss the good ones when they are gone. It worked out okay in the end as the person I helped out has never forgotten it .
Basswood is perfectly fine jeff becks personal strat was basswood and it tends to be used on v high end, high gain, guitars like shur. Its good for higher gain stuff. I like it bc it gives a distinct japanese flavour to a traditional fender bc thats whats available over there the rest are imported and those guitars come at a premium. Its like ibanez crossed w fender.
I like the way you present the product. I nearly bought this Japan traditional guitar until I met something that's more beautiful, Japan Hybrid ii. It has a giant orange drop, black shielding paint, vintage locking tuner, C type, and the easier trustroad.. Thank you 4 sharing anyway..
Lake Placid Blue with rosewood fingerboard is my all time favorite Strat look. Mine came with a parchment pickguard and white pickups. I put on a mint green guard, with buttercream pickup covers/knobs/switch and whammy tips - it went from beautiful to absolutely mesmerizing.
Tip - loosen pick guard screws a bit before removing protective plastic. This way you avoid those annoying little bit of plastic left behind around the screws.
i have a mij lake placid blue strat from the mid 80's, it has a skunk stripe and rosewood fretboard.. a previous owner moded it with a humbucker at the brigde. i love the guitar.
Amazes me are people that don't want basswood bodies but still want a reliced guitar. The basswood will relic just playing in your bedroom folks. Good stuff.
2001 1962 Reissue Mexican Strat with CS 54 Fender pickups and medium jumbo frets by Ron Pace in Houston Texas. This guitar can compete with any custom shop fender.
Made in Japan are just as good as the latest American apart from custom shop. At least they’re all wood not bits of off cuts glued together like most painted American bodies. Nice guitar mate.
Like your preference of blue guitars. Very informative video. Leaving the black plate off is ugly and dirt collects in the springs. I do not understand why people have it off.
1962 Reissue Stratocaster Lake Placid Blue / Dark Rosewood Made in Mexico with 1954 Fender CS pickups wound by Abbergail Yabarra. Regretted by Ron Pace with medium jumbo frets.
I recently bought a Fender Vintera 2, mine is a 60 Stratocaster in Sunburst with beautiful rosewood scale and excellent pickups sound. The guitar has the same specs with 7 1/4 radius . You should make a comparison with one new vintera models, you gonna see the the Mexican made are very good also ....
I made it this far! My Vintera Road Worn 60s Strat looks very similar, but has a Pau Ferro fretboard. Not in the market now, but would love to play a made in Japan
I’m new to the channel and very impressed - good production, unusual but not gimmicky content, guitar tested using a standard reference rig, and I especially love your dry delivery. Subscribed.
I just got the Harley Benton Jazzmaster in Lake Placid Blue. Good thing, too, or you'd have given me GAS! (something with a humbucker at the bridge and a P90 on the neck. Yes, that's the ticket! Damn! Now, I've given myself GAS!)
I have made in japan 60s traditional strat, too. Craftmanship and material quality is really good. But the pickups and the electronics don't really keep up with the rest. I ended up replacing pickups.
I just bought one of these today and while I was watching the video I noticed that I have the same serial number than this guitar on mine, so I litterally bought this guitar today, feels funny😂
Great looking strat. I have a Japanese telecaster that is a well made instrument. I might have considered removing the tone wire from the middle pickup setting and connect it to the bridge pickup while the pickguard was off. I’ve done it before.
I have a Steinberger Spirit GT Pro Deluxe headless guitar in Frosted Blue which looks similar to Lake Placid Blue; it has a body made of basswood and the guitar itself looks nothing like a Stratocaster, yet to my ears it sounds like a hot-rodded Stratocaster, the neck uses Fender's 25.5 inch scale but has a kind-of Gibson feel to it.
Hey Landon, great video! Lucky 4 me my good friend Steve sold me his '02 american texas special strat last year for a very reasonable price(much cheaper than used market) Anyway, I removed the back trem cover because it had an aged pearloid pickguard that looked shitty and I replaced immediately lol. It seemed dumb to pay for a matching back plate when most people remove them anyway! I sold both the plates back to Steve.
Hey! If you had a choise, you'd buy this traditional 60s strat or b-stock vintage premium series strat (2010) ST62 TX with usa made texas special's, two pieces alder body. They are about same price, trad 60s even bit cheaper, and i cant decide which one to buy, because i dont know which would be better in quality, last years guitars from mexico was awesome, maybe same with japan, or opposite, maybe 2008-2012 will be better. Particular exemplar of traditional 60s strat has a darkest fretboard that i've seen in my whole life, thats honestly the main reason why im thinking.
@@landonbailey & his brother event on to play with the New Pornographers..cool...I’m digging them...” watch later list “ is playing now....thanks man..
@@landonbailey I guess it's a Japan exclusive exclusive. The double exclusivity means it's supposed to only be purchased in Japan and can't be shipped out of country by Fender. Something like that :)
I own a 2021 MIJ 60's Traditional Strat in Sonic Blue, bought from Thomann last year. It's very similar to yours, as the nut string spacing is narrower as the EU/AM models. Vintage Trem bridge 6-point, Rosewood slab, truss rod end at the base of the neck. The U-shape neck is my absolute favorite feature about this guitar, as I have relatively large hands. The pickups are louder than my Maxican Strat. The other thing i noticed right away and needs "adapting" are the vintage frets, narrow and small. I like them. I can dig in without getting the note out of tune. What I find super funny is that each and every time i pick it up, i play a John Frusciante opening riff and my GF gives me *that* look.... "it sounds like the real thing".... i giggle.
I bought an artist brand. Ausssie brand of the one here in the USA. Closet queen 2 years old for 80 bux it plays better than any fender in the house. Wilkinson pickups. I can't put it down I have far more expensive guitars. Set up properly. I dropped custom shop fat 50's neck n middle and a p90 rail in the bridge. Stays in tune straight neck plays like butter. Insane. Tone wise and playing wise it's my new favorite. Then my epi sg400 closet queen I paid 70 bux for. Then my Michael Kelly patriot premium And ibanez s670. The fenders and gibson and kramers around here no longer matter. They fall short of these main 4. Time to sell 9 guitars I'll never touch again.
It looks identical to my MIM late 90s strat except for the pickups. With yours, you have the traditional various heights on the pole pieces, with mine, the pole pieces follow the curve of the fretboard. Both are gorgeous guitars and I totally get the love of blue guitars. My MIM strat, my Squire Cabronita and my Ibanez RG!
the problem with a basswood body is that it is an inexpensive hardwood, which is a problem when you are still paying a premium price for the finished product.
Maybe you could do another video on this guitar. Have you tried to dye the fret board darker / black? Fiddly job but on this one, it would look so much more better er!
MIJ Fender are killer! i once owned Fender Aerodyne with Dimarzio Collection pickups. im not sure with the year but base on its condition its more than a decade guitar. i love the tone i even use it on some recordings. hope I still have it, anyways you should found one also and it's a lot more cheaper but the tone is killer
Great video! I just recently ordered a Squire Tele with a Wide Range in the neck position. I really like the Squire models because I find they’re a great base for mods. I haven’t noticed much difference in fit and finish between a higher end model like your MIJ and lower end models like Squire or Harley-Benton other than the PUPs. Did your pedal display reflect the actual settings that you used?
I've had Japanese Fender its Aerodyne Strat btw, Basswood body rosewood fretboard look so nice the finishing is absolutely stunning! Better than US Fender
@@landonbailey nothing spectacular about it, but for $450 - $550, it’s a great base guitar. Throw better pickups on and it’s punching way above its weight. Not super impressed with many other Sterlings...
I like to leave the back plate off whenever possible. I have a guitar that I keep it on though because the wood underneath is really rough and snags on my shirt. But it fits so snugly in the cavity I didn't put the screws back in because I don't need them. Also, I really wish they made bachelor chow. It would really make my life a lot easier.
I wonder what radius the neck is on this. I also love blue and I just purchased a Vintera 50s Strat in Sonic Blue, but I modified it with a narrow bridge spacing and swapped out the neck for a Player Plus neck in 12" radius. The 7.25" I didn't care for.
Awesome, really like it, love the color and all around look. I got prs custom 24 se, got to get me another fender though. This would be perfect. Take care Landon, always great videos.
How do the Japanese made guitars compared to the Mexican standard ones? I've been wanting a Tele or a Strat for a while and have too many other really expensive guitars and don't feel like spending $1500 on an American.
Wicked guitar! Fender should supply dealers with some template for drilling the holes for backplates for customers who want them so us non plate boys get a sexy smooth finish on the back for our buckles to rub into.

I have made in japan 60s traditional strat, too. Craftmanship and material quality is really good. But the pickups and the electronics don't really keep up with the rest. I ended up replacing pickups.
👍🎸
i was wondering if limblifter would ever crawl back out of the sludge, they did good stuff.
they've never really stopped
i have that in black.
it took me sometime to get used to the u shaped neck but now i cant put it down! excellent guitar!
I have a MIJ Strat … it’s great in every way
👍🎸
-the blue w/ rosewood is a winner !!!!
I just bought one of these today and while I was watching the video I noticed that I have the same serial number than this guitar on mine, so I litterally bought this guitar today, feels funny😂
I sold it to someone in Montreal
Make a lot of sense then! That’s where I bought it!
Enjoy! nice guitar
Cool guitar! Is it not sold in the EU?!?
Japan only
@@landonbailey It is a shame!
Great looking strat. I have a Japanese telecaster that is a well made instrument. I might have considered removing the tone wire from the middle pickup setting and connect it to the bridge pickup while the pickguard was off. I’ve done it before.
cool mod! I may do it in the future
How do these compare to the heritage series?
I sold both the plates back to Steve.
cheers!
Great demo on a beautiful blue strat!
Thank you kindly!
I’d buy this one again
Did not expect that voice to come out of that guy( Limblifter)..very Silversun... I'm going back for more... thanks!
such a great and unique sound from Ryan Dahle.
@@landonbailey & his brother event on to play with the New Pornographers..cool...I’m digging them...” watch later list “ is playing now....thanks man..
3:28 I'm getting the J Precision bass shown there in the Black/Gold Sparkle via Trogly. So very stoked for that.
looks cool! why do you have to buy it through him?
"it sounds like the real thing".... i giggle.
nice!
@@landonbailey How do you like the overall sound/feel and is it different to other strats you played?
Great looking & sounding guitar. I like Lake Placid blue. I have basically the same guitar in that colour, its a US 62 reissue from '86.
Very cool!
@@landonbailey Cheers Landon.
The Japan reverb link does not work. Just takes you to Reverb!
it's a catch all link, you have to search for the item
I would like a specific Japan seller I can trust! But I’ll check it out!
Then my Michael Kelly patriot premium
And ibanez s670.
The fenders and gibson and kramers around here no longer matter. They fall short of these main 4. Time to sell 9 guitars I'll never touch again.
🎸👍
It looks identical to my MIM late 90s strat except for the pickups. With yours, you have the traditional various heights on the pole pieces, with mine, the pole pieces follow the curve of the fretboard. Both are gorgeous guitars and I totally get the love of blue guitars. My MIM strat, my Squire Cabronita and my Ibanez RG!
Rock on!
That's a nice strat man. Glad it worked out for you.
Thanks!
Is this guitar suitable for someone with large fingers?
I've got an Aerodyne and I love it more than a US standard. The Japan guitars are great quality at a better price.
the problem with a basswood body is that it is an inexpensive hardwood, which is a problem when you are still paying a premium price for the finished product.
when I've looked up prices, say Ash VS Basswood, ash isn't priced much higher
Remeber you used to be able to buy fender JPN guitars for about 300 gbp. Then they stopped exporting them. Better than made in USA even in the mid 90s
I do not 😁
Maybe you could do another video on this guitar. Have you tried to dye the fret board darker / black? Fiddly job but on this one, it would look so much more better er!
ua-cam.com/video/8uNPCnpYDSg/v-deo.html
Did your pedal display reflect the actual settings that you used?
yes the pedals are actual settings used
@@landonbailey Great that you got that working! I think it really helps in understanding how the tone we're hearing is crafted.
someone recommended it! maybe it was you? if so thanks again
@@landonbailey Yep that was me! Glad you were able to make it happen! I’m going to pay more attention to you guitar tone demos now!
I made it this far. Good looking guitar. Sounds good with over driver. Clean was lacking some bass
I thought so too
clean is pretty thin
my first strat (mim) 93?..was the same color... moved on to a 62AVRI... now back to 2 MIM strats..( faded sonic blue & a weird CG apple green)
I've had Japanese Fender its Aerodyne Strat btw, Basswood body rosewood fretboard look so nice the finishing is absolutely stunning! Better than US Fender
Very cool!
For me, it’s the Sterling Cutlass CT50 that people should be raging about...
I will look it up
@@landonbailey nothing spectacular about it, but for $450 - $550, it’s a great base guitar. Throw better pickups on and it’s punching way above its weight. Not super impressed with many other Sterlings...
I'll take the PRS Silver Sky SE all day at that price range
what about at 3am on a Wednesday?
I like to leave the back plate off whenever possible. I have a guitar that I keep it on though because the wood underneath is really rough and snags on my shirt. But it fits so snugly in the cavity I didn't put the screws back in because I don't need them.
Also, I really wish they made bachelor chow. It would really make my life a lot easier.
hopefully they make it in the future
@@landonbailey Hang on, I gotta deliver a pizza to a cryogenics lab.
The fingerboard has rolled edges in that Traditional II 60s ?
I think this one had slightly rolled edges
Hi, the reverb link just takes me to the reverb page but not the Japanese guitar, am I using the wrong finger for the link?
that's correct
As always, nice video. Cool guitar. Any idea of what the pickups are compatible to? Keep up the great content.
I made it this far! It's a gorgeous colour
good job!
I wonder what radius the neck is on this. I also love blue and I just purchased a Vintera 50s Strat in Sonic Blue, but I modified it with a narrow bridge spacing and swapped out the neck for a Player Plus neck in 12" radius. The 7.25" I didn't care for.
9.5
Awesome, really like it, love the color and all around look. I got prs custom 24 se, got to get me another fender though. This would be perfect. Take care Landon, always great videos.
hey thanks Richard! ya it's a cool guitar
Nice. I really like the White one - perhaps someday - your video helped push me a bit further.
Glad it helped
Looks and sounds amazing.
great guitar!
Nice Guitar and I really like that Guitar friendly chair! Do tell what kind it is?
Lazyboy office chair from Costco
How do the Japanese made guitars compared to the Mexican standard ones? I've been wanting a Tele or a Strat for a while and have too many other really expensive guitars and don't feel like spending $1500 on an American.
pretty similar. I've found the neck fit and finish cleaner on the MIJ models I've owned
@@landonbailey thanks!
Wicked guitar! Fender should supply dealers with some template for drilling the holes for backplates for customers who want them so us non plate boys get a sexy smooth finish on the back for our buckles to rub into.
I take the backplate off on a vintage reissue as it's easier to change strings.
👍🎸
