      I just ran into You from after watching Masego's Sweet Yamz Challenge to ThePocketQueen's collaboration with J Moss etc. for the full song "Latin Chill Vibes". I.......................honestly, I really don't know what to say. Maybe just...thank you for playing your part in reigniting a flame within our race that was thought to be long gone after the 20th Century. Particularly a flame of class, hard work, dignified talent, and character not that you're perfect because no one is but strive to be so no pressure.

    Strayhorn wrote this when he was just a kid working in a drugstore.
    Go imagine the talent he had..
    “’Lush Life’ wasn’t the first tune of mine Duke [Ellington] heard. In fact, he didn’t hear it until just a little while ago. I wrote it in 1936 while I was clerking at the Pennfield drugstore on the corner of Washington and Penn in Pittsburgh….I was writing a song a day then, and I’ve forgotten many of them myself….One night I remembered it and played it for Duke….I called it 'Life is Lonely,’ but when anyone wanted me to play it they’d ask for ‘that thing about lush life’.”

    I saw Samara live for the first time last weekend (19th Dec’23) at the Barbican, as part of the London Jazz Festival. She was amazing. Just blew me away. Her range, her control, her phrasing, her stage craft - wow! What is she going to be like in 10 or 20 years time? Samara opened the set by singing an a Capella intro to Mingus’s Reincarnation of a Lovebird. She could have walked off stage after that and the audience would have been content. 😌
    A question: Does anyone know if Samara has perfect pitch?

    • @kelvinong6549

      This is awesome but I think the Coltrane/Hartman version is just wayyyy too ingrained in my heart at this point.

    • @loonaya
      @loonaya 9 місяців тому +3

      This version is incredible as is Coltrane/Hartman's of course. But my favourite is actually Billy Strayhorn's. He is not close to being as good of a singer as either of them. It's not perfect, it's flawed, but that makes it great, it's really raw and personal, and since he wrote it, you could feel his pain.
      I think a simple arrangement with less instruments makes this song more personal. Even this Samara's version, it's incredible because her singing is from out of this world, but it would have been better with just her and piano. When she starts singing with just her and piano, that is the most emotive part imo. With the whole band and horns it's kind of overproduced and it steals from the raw emotion.

    • @DizzyToW
      @DizzyToW 9 місяців тому +7

      @@loonayaI see what you’re saying but I actually disagree, this version to me with the way things flow, the way things are voiced in the horns, The mellow sound and story told, I like the direction of this. In a way it’s a different color than the others. Including the very last moment on “too”. To me these kinds of thing makes it feels more like a story, words can play a part, instruments can play a part too. I didn’t feel like it was overdone at all, I felt like the musicians complemented her. Their her band so I’m sure she feels this too. I heard them in Chicago, Individually they are all out of this world too so it’s always amazing to here them change gears like this.
      I’ve heard many arrangements. Including ones of this tune. I play myself. 1 thing I would like to note and that I love is a lot of arrangements and songs copy and paste. I like that there are no repeated moments. it’s new words new voicings new ideas developing all the way through. I appreciate these musicians including Samara for allowing music to grow like this in their bands.
      But that’s what’s so nice about these things, we can have different opinions and be right to ourselves😊.

      A Excellent performance Bravo👏🏾. It was Donna Summer / Quincy Jones who introduced me to the Lush Life. Billy Strayhorn classic, at the time when Strayhorn wrote this song he never been to Paris let along left Pittsburgh PA. Sarah Vaughn version is awesome also. John Coltrane / Johnny Hartman version is the standard supreme. This song is in my top five songs of all time. Samara version is it's own classic. A must have .👏🏾💯

    Fabulous musicians. They sound like a big band. Samara Joy is flawless in her interpretation of Billy Strayhorn's composition. The ennui of the lyrics is tempered by her melodious sighs.

    What a maturity and deep undertanding of the spirit and soul of this music. in my opinion, Samarah kept the best of the elders, while keeping away all of the pitfalls, especially egotic ones.

    It's nice to see young cats playing your session. Sometimes it seems like older musicians have all the sessions, but maybe that's just an impression.
