You're taking "Cinderella life" too literally. Mary thought that Alex would live with a wealthy family and have everything she could ever want. She in no way could have predicted that Alex's parents would toss her away like they did. She's not to blame for that, they are. They abandoned Alex because she was showing signs of mental illness and didn't get her the help she needed. You're also forgetting that Marry had limited options. She had, at this point, been locked away in Radley since she was a teenager. Jessica had shock therapy performed on her. I don't blame her in any capacity for being desperate to get out. From what we can tell, Alex was completely unexpected. There wasn't supposed to be another baby. There's also no way that Jessica, who was on the board, didn't know about her. Jessica could have told the Hastings about Alex, but chose not to. This is probably due to the fact that Jessica was the one actively keeping Alex away from the Hastings. She is likely the one who presented Mary this impossible choice knowing that Mary was desperate to be free. Also, there's no guarantee that she could have even contacted the Hastings
I love Mary but I hated that she injected Spencer with that stuff and said sweet dreams 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄 like stand up to Alex show her that you're the mother not her. I wish that Spencer, Mary, Alex, and Charlotte got to have at least one family moment before Charlotte died. I would've liked to see Jason and Alison have a family moment with them too.

Nothing about the storyline is ridiculous. In fact, it's one of the more realistic storylines ever to be written into the show and, as someone who suffers from Bipolar Disorder and shares the condition with a parent, I'm glad that it was explored in the show.
