Japan's superior Minidisc Album packaging

- Did you know Japan had their own unique MD boxes?
Nope and you don't care either? - Fair enough, just thought I'd mention it.
Just a quick vid.
FAQ
Q) Why are there comments from a week ago when this video has just gone live today?
A) Patrons usually have early access to videos. I'll show the first version of a video on Patreon and often the feedback I get results in a video going through further revisions to improve it. e.g. Fix audio issues, clarify points, add extra footage or cut extraneous things out. The video that goes live on youtube is the final version.

I like how neutral this channel is. I can actually relax watching this.
4:12 the word "サンプル" shown on the bottom left of that minidisc is "sample" in English, which often means that this particular disc is only for promotional use and not for sale.
Yeah, spotted that as well. Wanted to make a comment on it, but thought I’d check first to see if anybody already did. Wonder whether this title was ever actually released, and why they’d need samples in the first place.
@@wich1 Retail and trade-show demos, reviews, and other promotion. Possibly production testing, such as how quickly and reliably the various lines could switch between products - ever bought an album with the wrong audio on it?
@@wich1 Promo copies would be sent to radio stations.
In Japan, a lot of the retailers have a listening station for newly released music. Even today, you'll find an enclosed CD Player with good headphones next to a new release. That was propably a minidisc sent to a retailer for that.
Obi is always more complete than European editions
The Japanese have a special eye for packaging. Bows, wrapping paper, paper sleeves protecting the products. I believe it's part of their culture. You can buy the cheapest snack in a conbini and chances are it's packed with more care than premium products in the west. I once bought a 200 yen (about two bucks) bar of chocolate and it came in a cardboard box, inside of which there was a wrapping sleeve, containing all the separate chocolate squares, resting on a small, ornate cardboard tray. All of this packaging, and yet Japan is a country where litter is practically non existent. Truly a marvel.
It's amazing what a society can accomplish when they're taught from a young age to always be mindful of the people around you and that bad behavior reflects poorly on your character. It's a stark difference from the "fuck you, got mine" attitude of many countries.
Note: "Conbini" is a Japanese word for convenience store. It's borrowed from English.

I've always felt jealous about the japanese cover art for the games...
Games ,movies , hell even candy wrappers the Japanese know how to be fun with advertising/marketing
Yeah, Japanese megadrive games almost always had beautiful colourful artwork whereas the European releases had very generic forgettable covers. The carts looked and felt better as well.
I like the minamilism actually, final fantasy and metal gear solid were just the logo or some beautiful art like a painting, where for the rest of the world we get the character's face stamped in front like whatever
Fun fact: People in Pal regions also get the Japanese boxart
@@amiiboguy5357 No we didnt, compare something like golden axe on megadrive. The Japanese boxart is fantastic, the UK one is awful. I dont think any had the same artwork as Japan.
6:04 - There's something I find so aesthetically pleasing about that player, it just screams "late 90's / early 00's".
Perhaps I should make a quick video all about it one day.
As far as I know, yes - it was Japan only
You'll love twitter.com/y2k_aesthetic then
@@colinstu Fantastic. Thanks for sharing
Very millennium this is what the future is going to look like. It didn't
it's the same with EVERY Japanese format..I love to import releases from Japan because they are far more impressive, whether it's CD, LP, 7" or cassette..
True! I have a few cutesy MC Hammer mini-CD-singles (3") from Japan. Box is twice the size in length (6", then, I'd guess), and can be folded up into a sort of "pop-up standee".
Even video games often have incredible box art in Japan. Ico for the PS2 comes to my mind. In Japan, it's a gorgeous painting. In North America, it's a CG boy wearing a viking bandana and wielding a stick standing in front of a windmill, while the face of a ghost girl stares into your soul.
They really hate foreigners so much they ruin their own products just to spite us.
"For those of you listened to minidiscs back in the late-90s..." Hold on fella! I've recorded over 1000 discs and still listen to them almost exclusively
Hold on, 1000 discs?!
I left my home in the UK back in 2014 and I passed my Sony CMT-SP55MD microsystem and my 200ish disks to my brother for safekeeping. Most of those MDs he's actually recorded and sent to me in the post in the late 90s, early 00s when he lived in London and I was up in t' north.
Wow
@@glipk Yup...a life well spent, just not my income well spent. Did I mention I have two full components and six portable players? Plus 200 blank discs.
I hear you William. Great format and the sound is just awesome - not to mention the plug and record. I'm holding a Sony MD Walkman MZ-NH700 right now. Still in regular use. I like MD.
In fifty years there will be music-format historians collecting rare videos of Techmoan collecting rare music formats.
Used to do sound engineering at a local theatres in the early 2000's and quite often most of the performers brought their music/backing tracks for the shows on minidisc, so regular theatre goers probably heard minidisc alot more than they realise. Must say, it was always a relief to see them turn up with a minidisc as their chosen format, instead if a hevily scratched cd-r or chewed up cassette 😆
Was that because some keyboards had mini-discs with midi files on them ?
@@highpath4776 Not necessarily, it was just a rugged and high quality format that the music producers trusted. Playing a mini-disc on a keyboard sounds more like a one-man-band than a theatre act.
I have many MDs with those 'Japanese' cases. TDK released recordable discs to the pro market called 'STUDIO' and they even did a 'PRO' version (MD-TXG). Sony also released a recordable disc for professionals (PRMD-74) that came in one of those cases. They all also had a variety of sticky labels for the discs with studio references such as 'Session' in blue, 'Production' in red, 'Original' in green 'Safety Copy' in pink and 'Not For Production' in yellow.

It's a shame that MiniDisc never took off here in the USA, I would have loved to have not only made high quality mix-discs, but these Japanese releases look really smart. Anything to save space! Now we can have our music collections in our pocket, so I guess we can imagine what might have been? Nice video, Techmoan!
Japan's superior [insert anything of your liking] packaging
i just watched a video about a Man, talking mini disc packaging
And i love it!
Not just any man, man.
@@imansfield, I just read a comment from a man, about a man, who commented about a man who passionately discussed the packaging of mini discs in the US, UK, and Japan, noting fear uncertainty and doubt from the music industry and the possible prejudice of cultures regarding marketing costs and value to the consumer. Techmoan deserves a Phd by now.
Even some of the CD cases for Japanese releases were of higher quality.
Warms my heart to see Gang Starr's "Step in the Arena" cassette. I ordered that tape by mail from a catalogue when I was still in high school because record shops where I lived tended not to carry rap unless it was incredibly mainstream (Hammer, Fresh Prince, Tone Loc, Run-D.M.C. etc).
I love all your minidisc videos. I miss the format. I found my player and blank discs after watching one of your other minidisc videos just a few weeks ago. Pre-recorded minidisc albums are so expensive on the secondhand market here in Australia.
The modern Mini-Disc releases really stepped up their game!
Wait, it isn't Saturday morning, it feels weird you dropping a video at this time!
I’ve not long woke up from a nap. I was much confused 🤣
Having the day off from work for Veterans Day it sure feels like it though having gotten to sleep in 2 hours extra this morning lol.
As always, Japan makes the best and most thought out products. Go there and explore, it's unreal. Really.
Pre recorded Minidiscs are insane expensive but you can still find blanks and make your own fairly cheap.
Reminds me of how nice the box size was for the PSVita. Wouldn't have minded it even smaller.
Are we no longer getting a Saturday upload ? Saturday Techmoan is the adult equivalent of Saturday morning cartoons. Please reconsider, although happy with whatever day. Thank you for all the great content.
They seem to do this with lots of media in terms of offering something extra versus the rest of the world. Even today, when an album is released on CD in Japan, there's usually a bonus track or more.
I lived in Japan back in 90s and never knew pre-recorded MDs exist
The Japanese LP cover for Miles Davis' Dark Magus was a real thrill.
My main reason for using MiniDiscs back in the day was recording live shows or band practice. I remember when I first heard a MD recording playback and was absolutely blown away by the quality, most notably the lack of tape hiss. I was never able to afford Type IV cassettes and the matching recording equipment to utilize the higher quality.
I absolutely loved Mini Disc. It was an awesome format. I had a few players and such - but I could never understand why Sony didn't market it properly here in Australia. Stupidly Sony .
1:46 Ahh, that explains it. I bought an INXS cd in the early 90s in one of those weird long boxes. I've only ever seen that one, so I guess it was an import.
I got the notification for this video at work. THe first one i sought out to play after wotk was this one. Thank you for doing such a great job! I love your professionalism with all your work. THasnk you again!
Le minidisc, mon format audio préféré, compact, de tres bonne qualité et surtout inaltérable
I love the detail and content of these video's I love going through the archive of material as well as new releases🙂
Halfway through, I thought someone should design the perfect MD packaging just for kicks, but I'd forgotten the recent retro releases already did.
Always liked how Japanese stuff came in smaller boxes often. Japanese Gamecube game boxes are lovely and small.
"If you were a minidisc user... back in the 90s..."
Mate, I'm still using minidisc!
Yep - one of the best formats evaaaaar.
whats your number or instagrame

Wow that was good. I've been using MD since it came out and never new that either. Thx.
Your channel is the goat. So necessary. Keep these vids coming. Also appreciate your hip hop head easter eggs.
Thanks for the release today! Tropical storm is impacting me directly and it's a nice distraction from the absurd weather!
I just love minidiscs musicians used them for backing tracks before smart phones and computers did the job for them.
I love the research you do for every video. 👍
Perhaps the packaging is one of the reasons MD was so much more popular in Japan.
You have inspired me to get my mini disc deck out. Found that the eject mechanism had stopped working as not used for so long. So after seeing your other videos where you repair tec I thought I'd have a go myself. And after fitting a new drive belt found on eBay it's now as good as new.
So thanks and keep posting these great videos
Crud! I should get my webshop up and running again. Don’t have many MDs left, but got some vinyl and MCs. Just need to get my studio up and running plus the rest of the apartment so that I can tidy up the storage room and set up the system for selling stuff. It’ll come soon though. :)
More cassette releases would be wonderful. I'd buy some.
Love the retro grooves albums. I’m slowly working my way through all 4 volumes

Mid-week Techmoan? We are not worthy
I'm learning japanese and I'm a little bit proud that I just paused the video and was able to (slowly) decipher what music the discs contain. I don't know the other one, but I correctly identified the Men in Black Original Soundtrack - or (how the Japanese say) the "men in burakku orijinaru saundoturakku".
The variety and depth of man's attempts to communicate with recorded media knows no bounds.
( I remember as a kid watching a 35mm slide show featuring the voice of Walter Cronkite on a LP. You played the record while your Dad ran the projector. The room was dark and I was 8 or 9 and I remember the feeling of being transfixed by the voice of "Uncle" Walter and whatever the image before me that was trying to teach me something.
I'll have to search, but Have you ever done an episode on 'wire' recorders?
Well I come to learn about Minidisc the format I love and find out a bonus bit of information about the long boxes on CDs... I was always wondering why this weird somewhat stupid packaging was done and now I know :) Thanks for the bonus info :)
Interesting, that explains the case format of my MD Pro disks!
MD recordables for Professional use came in these cases (used for radio jingles etc)
Wow, it’s not Saturday morning and we get a new episode. What shall I watch while eating Saturday breakfast? Nice info and great as usual! Well Done!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
As always, absolutely love Japan's quality and unique tech. Thanks for sharing this great nugget.
The Nintendo Gamecube cases were the same. DVD cases in PAL (and NTSC-U I think), but the Japanese ones were little cases with a cardboard sleeve.
3:09 Ah yes, gotta love a bit of Emmerson, Wake and Falmer
I loooove you, Techmoan! 🍄
Men in Black - The "Alubm" must be one of those odd Japanese quirks haha.
*Neuralyzes you* What you saw was reflected swamp gas.
Love the MiniDisc related content 🙌🏼🙌🏼✨
As always - thanks for making awesome content.
Even your "quick videos" are far superior than the typical YT fare.
Really good ideas and good work
Hello Techmoan, nice video! You could do one talking about the Japanese releases of Laserdiscs! They often were quite superior than their western counterparts! Cheers from Brazil.
7:25 Indeed, official releases at least up until early 2002. 'Invincible' by Michael Jackson (late 2001) did come out on MiniDisc.
When it comes to Japanese international releases, I swear we in the west always miss out on this'n'that.
Great video by the way!
Is it Saturday already?
Bonus techmoan video!!!, hope there's still one Saturday too
I really wanted Minidisc to come out on top and push the CD/DVD out. It was a nearly indestructible disc that you would have a difficult time scratching. Also, being able to record in your car with the minidisc headunit or record you band straight to digital with a potable player/recorder.
Great video I'm always learning something new thanks 👍
Back when I was an active MD user, I had a grand total of one (1) pre-recorded album, _Journey's Greatest Hits_ (don't judge me). Oddly, it didn't come in either of those two types of case; IIRC, it was shelved in something rather like a plain white CD longbox, and the album itself was in a slidey plastic slipcase just slightly bigger than the disc itself (like the kind blank MDs came in, only not transparent), with the LP/CD art reproduced at tiny scale, front and back. I remember the art was so haphazardly reproduced that the track list text was too small to read--they literally had just cranked the scale down and let 'er rip. :)
Yeah, nothing wrong with Journey. They had a great Greatest Hits album.
I had about half a dozen. Had to get on the train to central London to find a decent range. Think it was £14.99 in Virgin Megastore for a new album.
All of my discs only came in that little plastic slipcase. I didn't realize there was any other type of packaging until now.
An unexpected video! I love it. Oh and good content as well.
USA CD long box packaging was also discontinued due to environmental waste (trees), being that 50% of the box wasn't needed for packaging. I had a large collection (front side only) I hung on my bedroom wall.
Ooooh that's why there were long CD cases! I learn so much from this channel.
Very interesting, thanks for sharing this!
I love minidisc and still use mine.....some of my most coveted items in my music collection are my original copies of the bends, OK Computer and Kid A on minidisc! Along with the unauthorised biography of Reinhold Messner by Ben Folds Five!
Appreciated the plug for The 8-Bit Guy! I’m a fan.
The only downside to subscribing to this channel is that I always get the notifications at 3 am
Congrats for your million subscribers ! You deserved!
Thanks for bringing that to our attention, you know all your viewers *would care* that MD cases in Japan were different and superior. I remember buying JDM Betamax "High Grade" tapes in Japan in 2010, was shocked that they were still available to buy new back then and the quality of the cassette and case compared to the UK versions was night and day.
Your music taste never fails to impress me, reppin' Gang Starr and so many other classic US hip hop albums.
Hee...Kind Of Blue was 1 of 3 pre-recorded MDs I owned, the others were ELO's Greatest Hits and the first PUSA album. Deck was a Sony MDS-JA3ES.
Hi, New subscriber here from the US. I still have 2 Sony units that work well. One is rack mountable and the other is a portable unit that runs on a rechargeable battery or AA's. I never had any prerecorded music but have lots of recordable mini discs. I love tape machines and all of the things your videos feature, Looking forward to enjoying them. Thank you!
When i was in Tokyo some years ago i went to Tower Records Store and bought some CDs and BluRays of my favorite bands. The quality of the disc the paper quality the boxes etc is just out of this world 😬 complete premium feeling.
The little cardboard bit that goes over the hinge side under the shrink wrap on those Japanese discs is called a spine card or OBI. When buying old Japanese games they tend to be worth more with the spine card.
Thank you Mr. Techmoan for all the wonderful viddy vids you give us droogies. Hasn't Japan always had cooler tech than anyone else?
Another great video! 👏👍
I prefer the Japanese to the UK ones, but tiny cases used nowadays are my favourites. Ideally a tiny case inside the Japanese packaging would have been good; have the bigger case at home, and take the smaller case and disc when mobile.
I had forgotten about those long boxes they used to use for CDs. And now I'm remembering those plastic "skeleton" versions that would hold a regular CD case so they could keep using the same shelves. I think those also acted as the security sensor. Mind you, they were handy when you were CD shopping. Just grab a bunch by the handle-like end and hold them like a bag until you got to the register. A bit better than the old crook of the arm carry.
2 minutes ago! sweet! nothing else brightens the day more than a new techmoan video!
Iv watched a lot of your videos, iv never really needed to know these things, but now I do
love a shorter Techmoan vid.... keep em coming...
A mid-week video nice :)
One thing I disliked about the few prerecorded MiniDiscs that I had visible in this video: The titles were always in all caps. When I titled my discs, I properly used both. Each of the recorders that I used (Sharp 702, 722 then Pioneer Elite, then Sony NetMD) got progressively easier to title stuff, but all had lower case letters. If you ever do another video on the recorders, try for a Sharp 722. It was particularly nice and satisfying to handle and use, and I like Sharp's eject better than Sony's. Another great video and interesting tidbit.
A few MD blanks that came to Europe used these same Japanese cases - the Sony MD2000 magnesium bodied MD and the TDK pro with the aluminium ARTS shell for example
The weekend has come early! 🙌
My only experience with using MiniDisc was in college radio in the mid 90s. Our cart machine was showing its age so it was replaced with a MiniDisc.
I don't ever recall them being sold at a place like BestBuy or Musicland.
I’m loving this mini disc saga
I don't know why, but I love your channel
That Planet X3 cameo got me thinking: when you gonna collab with the 8-Bit Guy, David Murray, again? Great stuff, as always.
