Apple iPhone 12 Mini review: Small and fast, but doesn't last

- The Apple iPhone 12 Mini is the first flagship-quality small phone we've seen in a while. For about $100 less than a standard iPhone 12, you get a device that packs the same camera and A14 processor, but into a device with a compact 5.4 inch screen. Still, despite the size, the edge-to-edge screen feels much roomier than the display on the similarly sized iPhone SE we reviewed earlier this year.
Apple has done a great job maintaining all the power the functionality of the full iPhone 12, including 5G support, but the 12 Mini does suffer from one drawback common to smaller phones: it's battery life is kind of lousy.

The whole battery life complaint is way blown up. People that want small phones use phones like they are supposed to be used, they don't use them to watch videos all day or to play games for hours on end.
yep, this guy in the video and many people is making such a big exaggeration on the battery life, the iphone 12 mini has 2 hour longer battery life than the iphone X and 1 hour longer than the 8 plus, when my 8 plus was at 100% lifespan it could last me a day easily without charging until i use it for high intense setting games like pubg with 60fps and extreme graphics then the battery degraded and so did the battery life dropping speed so bottom line if ur not using it intensely the battery should be alright and i dont think recording in 4k at 30 fps is as bad battery draining as using it for gaming if ur recording only for awhile.
I was actually kinda worried at first for getting the iphone 12 mini but since I just like compact phones, I will probably making it as my secondary phone!!!!
These people need to get a life who watch videos all day on their phone .... get an iPad
I own the 11 pro max but I’m upgrading to the 12 pro max , and honestly when I play cod it’s bye bye battery
But there are some people with small hands who prefer compact phones but they want great battery life and what's wrong if apple made phone little bit thicker and getting rid of camera bump and giving bigger battery ?
'Small, fast, but doesnt last' hits way too close to home 😥
TMI dude, TMI

It will actually last around 2 more hours that iPhone 8’s battery, so it’s not that bad tbh...

I’m on my iPhone 6 rn, and I carry around a huge portable charger, and with the mini, like you said, is good enough for me
I’m on my first full day of heavy use of my new mini it’s 6:12pm and I’m at 56%. Totally fine with me.
Same duh
Currently I’m using iPhone SE because of its smaller size, I hate large sized cell phones. I’m planning to buy iPhone 12 mini/12 but I was very much worried about that battery life problem. I was thinking to buy iPhone 12 rather than mini but after what you said I’ll perhaps go for mini God willing.
My experience is the same I bought the iPhone 12 mini and the battery life is great. I came from a 11 pro and I’m not noticing some huge drop off in battery life. It seems to me that these reviewers are watching each others videos and just repeating the same talking points.
@refractured bro can u say ; what u meant by heavy usage ??
I know right, it’s perfect for me. Don’t know what this reviewer is talking about.
Seriously get over the battery issue. Some of us have jobs and aren’t on our phones for 12 hours per day. Plus it fits in your pocket.
thank you and well said. i have had my 7 for three years and the battery drains quickly when i browse. i enjoy the smaller phone and this mini seems to hit all the marks. not worried about the battery when i am not on the phone all day long playing video games or watching videos. the mini is for me and not the large 12 or 12 max.
@Akm Akm why?
@Akm Akm the battery life should be fine for my needs based on what I’ve read. Now I’d have rather the phone just be thicker, have three cameras and no camera bulge, snd a bigger battery, but it should be fine as it is.
@Akm Akm samsung flagships are more uglier because of multiple camera that occupy 1/3 of yung phones back
Right with you here! Sooo handy 😍
If you don’t waste your day away staring at your phone then this is probably perfect lol
But if one doesn't use his phone much, why pay so much to buy it.

I always hated Apple product, but:
- the only compact phone

- privacy data
maybe I’m going to try after 10 years of android
Yup. I have an OG SE from 2016 and I can still get the latest iOS if I wanted to. Upgrading to the 12 Mini.
Android vs Apple. It’s all dependent on what you do. I like the Apple ecosystem but not the prices.. I don’t use the extra features Android has but Apple also supports old devices for a long time. Generally people who switch to Apple complain about lack of features etc so if you can live without those then you’ll be fine. Resell value is also higher so keep that in mind as well.
Pixel 5 is compact
Same here
I defenitely recommend iphone. I was a android guy before, my last phone was Samsung S4, it was a nightmare having it. My whole family is android except me. I just like the apple eco system and the face ID is so easy and a blessing. My family has Sony, Samsung and even Huawei, great phones and all. But something just dont attract me about them.
@@sliceofpie8805 LOL Pixel 5 doesn't even come close to being compact, the iPhone 12 mini just barely makes it into compact territory and many would say it just misses.
This guy needs to appreciate the fact that this phone is encouraging him to stop "doom-scrolling" and otherwise wasting his day. Maybe this is the phone he needs
Bruh, he is a tech youtuber of course he is gonna doom-scroll. It’s not wasting his day it’s literally his job 😂
Millions people have been buying old iPhone SE originals over and over again because it's the prefect size for one handed-use and all of the new iphones are huge. This is what we've been waiting for.
Yep, and the new mini’s battery life will be a huge improvement over that!
I still use the OG SE!! It's amazing and will get another update to iOS 15 ;)
My SE has lasted me this long? I mean if it broke and there was not an Iphone mini I would totally get one again, but this little phone has been pretty durable.
@@abigailr2654 You can also buy SE's on ebay for $125 now. :)
People bought iPhone SE because of the price in the First place. I'm into small phones also, but Most people Like bigger phones. The mini doesn't sell well at all, it is just too damn expensive
Something to also keep in mind is it has an OLED screen, so if you use dark mode and dark wallpapers some tests show you can get up to 30% longer battery life than without dark mode.

I’ve had my 12 mini for about 10 days and it’s battery life seems good. I don’t watch Netflix on it and with daily use I only charge it around every 3 days. That seems fine to me.
Thats amazing lol
I thought you were gonna say once a day. Congrats
Every 3 days ? That means you don't use it a lot.
U r lying!!!!? Every 3 days????
All these reviewers pissing on the Mini's battery life; but the majority of us who're interested in this thing use phones like... phones. We don't doom scroll all day. The screen-on time makes ALL the difference. Heck I reckon the excellent standby time of iOS will get me through the day easily!

This is the comment I came looking for 😂
I don’t mind the battery life. When I first got it I started playing around with it. Normally I would be down 50% on battery life and surprisingly I was only down to 70%. Not bad. The only thing I noticed that Apple sacrificed on the Mini are the phone speakers and sound. It doesn’t have that richness compared to the other models. I love my Mini. Typed this all in one hand comfortably.
Maybe this should have been the last iPhone to get a power brick in box lol 😅
Truth hahahaha
@@hunterjayfilm definitely. They’ve only used USB-C for one generation. I’m coming from an iPhone XS to a 12 Mini, and I’d need a new power brick. Looking forward for the iPhone 8 vs iPhone 12 Mini battery comparison :)

Honestly the regular size iPhone 12 is the perfect size already. They squeezed a 6.1inch screen into a slimmer and overall smaller body. There’s honestly no benefit to getting the mini. Even if you’re not on your phone watching videos and playing games all day, most people are still emailing, surfing the web and your sacrificing the comfort of doing anything on your phone due to such a small size screen.

Well I started my day with 100% battery(iPhone 11 Pro), unplugged at 4:40am, it’s now 6:50pm with 63%, that is just with general day to day usage I personally think the iPhone 12 Mini would do me fine for battery.

Dave2D said the battery isn’t too bad. Also, if you’re getting the mini you’re more likely to use the phone far less than the max
I don't know if that's true. Battery matters, I'm tired of my iPhone 6s's battery
Indeed. I send a couple of messages a day. Read a couple of emails, take one or two pictures.. make zero to three phone calls... maybe look 10min web Pages... seems to be possible to do it with this.

I do agree with the recommendation. I purchased iPhone 12 mini and within a day noticed that it is not for heavy users of phone with most of the work done on phone instead of laptop/tab. Replaced it with iPhone 12.
Bought this baby alongside my s21 Ultra. It’s such a dream using this mini. Love the size and being able to put it in your pocket takes me back to the early smart phone days.

Dude but with that camera.. in a small package is just insane. I've the iPhone and been uploading videos with HDR 4K and more tests... the quality is just so good that is just incredible. That overcomes the small battery...
but obviously for heavy video shooting you need keep an external battery around and we're good to go...
My 11 pro will stay in my desk drawer, my new 12 Mini is a dream come thru, for so many years i have been swearing about the ever growing size and weight, still bought them all..
But now and then i power up my very old iPhone 4 and it is just marvelous, and 12 Mini is right up there, one that sticks with you.

Best review from iPhone 12 Mini. I am a subscriber now. Thank u!
I just got the iPhone 12 mini. And it’s a big upgrade from my iPhone 8. Battery life between changing has not been an issue for me. I plug in at night and charge overnight. So far, I unplug at 8a give or take and plug back in 10:30-11p and only used about half of the charge, and I’m on I think a lot. I’m on Facebook, UA-cam, email, phone about average to above average amount of time. My iPhone 8 I had to change every 3-4 hours doing the same thing or less.
3:38 if they only lit up the cutout, the screen would get burn in problems, see the Note 20 Ultra S-View case
Maybe look at the watch for time?
The first thing i will do with it, it is put a matte back screen protector anti finger prints ^^
Yup! That’s what I did... such a beauty with it on
Everywhere is always near a charger whether at home, in the car or work usually with fast chargers to top it off if going into a restaurant, store or etc. I love my mini and still use my 5s for work.
I’ve had mine about a week. My last phone was an iPhone 6. This is a huge improvement in every dimension. I have a very expensive camera for taking pictures. No phone will ever do better.

I think people buying this won’t be consuming lots of media on phone to begin with so may be battery is good enough for them.
Hmm. that's actually a good point. I would assume people who really want a compact phone are using it as such and using laptops or tablets for their media consumption.
Thanks for the honest review on the battery...I guess I made the right choice of getting the standard iphone 12. I upgraded from an iphone 7 and the battery was horrible.

Every new phone needs breaking in period for battery to reach peak performance. You can not judge a battery life immediately after purchase.
I LOVE this thing and I will be buy it regardless of its battery performance. Size is everything
I don’t get why they don’t make them just a mm thicker and have them last a good full day. This has been a criticism for _years_ by now and people buy other phones just because of that shortcoming.
Have you seen the sales numbers man? I agree with you but Apple is going through the roof.
I’d wager it has something to do with production cost inefficiencies. Product design is never as simple as changing some dimensions and moving on. Every unique feature or dimension introduces new configuration costs, tooling costs, packaging costs, assembly costs, etc
they could've made it thicker if it were for curved sides but with these flat edges, you would've not been able to hold that phone. Like you could've but it would be an unpleasant feeling, and that is why apple made phones slimmer with straight sides.
1 mm thicker could also get rid of that awful camera bump
@@muneeburrehman4698 that sounds like you were born in the smartphone era! Phones have been thicker with no issue before
After some initial battery growing pains, I end every day at about 50% on my mini. I use my iPad when I’m home, and I have a job that doesn’t involve me using my phone for business. I love these tech reviewers that think everyone is just on their phone constantly, 24/7 lol

4S thickness, 2 day battery life, no notch, fingerprint sensor. I would pay premium for that. I’m annoyingly commenting this all day. Can’t help it. I’ll find more. Haha.
@ohuhi 123 There's no disadvantage to great battery life (I guess extra thickness but who cares?) Less charging your phone also means it will last longer long term.
@ohuhi 123 "So stupid?" That's a little strong for an innocuous comment re: battery life. U raised in a barn? Sometimes I forget my charger when I'm with ur mom. Lol. U should prob save ur money for some social skills training.

Planned Obsolecence....Thats it
It’s safe to say the iPhone 12 Mini is about to be oh so popular this Xmas. 🎁😁
I basically agree with everything you say, after using mine for a week. I had high hopes when I got the SE 2020, but come dinner time and... I had no more phone after that. Then I got the 11 Pro and that was bliss (size is just a tad bigger but still great) I enjoy the excellent battery life of my 11 Pro. But it is a bit heavy though. So... the magic of lightness and smallness appealed to me again... and it’s in my hands for a little while now. It exactly as you said - I either carry both the 12 Mini and the 11 Pro or else I am very careful with the usage.
Note: I also have the excellent 12 Pro Max... but I don’t have pockets for phablets, so it stays home most of the time (pity, it’s very, very pleasant).
Love the size, hate the battery... nothing will ever beat the Xperia Z1 Compact with the android version it shipped with (after an update the battery was pretty much gone)

To be honest I charge my phone a lot anyways so battery life doesn't matter as much
8:28 It's clearly having abnormal battery self draining behaviour overnight without actual usage. It might be due to the machine learning for a new phone or something wrong with the phone. Otherwise, the battery level should be remained. Without this issue, the battery should be able to last much longer.
Yep. With any new iphone or after any ios update, apple has made it so that app updates are gradual over a night or two which leads to battery drain for new phones over the first 2 days or so.

What should I choose for vlogging: iPhone 11 or iPhone 12 mini??
Yes
@@rafikz77 Nooo. What's better? Not yes
neither.
@@guiT39 why?
@@leonid3472 Because I reckon vlogging requires a good battery life, doesn't it? I mean, it's an activity in which you keep the display on and is constantly using the camera and mics, so it must consume more than social media activities.
That being said, as you could see in these reviews, the mini has a low battery life and the iphone 11's is also not that great, so you'd probably do much better with an iphone 11 pro -- this one has an insane battery performance.
I think you’re being too dramatic about the battery life. This is not a phone to heavily use it (watch videos or play games all day). It’s a phone for people who already have an iPad for that, as I do. Can’t wait for my mini!
I have it and I love it. I don't waste all day with the phone and the rest fits perfect for me.
Everything apart . I loved the wallpaper . Plz tell me where to get that
This phone reminds me of the iPod touch
yeah small and fast but doesnt last, that's what she said..
The weight and size is what sells me. The battery is my only gripe but I guess it’s better than the older iPhones I’ve been using.
It is a matter of perspective. I own an iPhone 11 and 12, and I try to be a minimalist. My natural choice is iPhone 12 mini. When I work, I use my phone to occasionally check messages and sometimes listen to podcasts, and during weekend, I carry the phone while I am out for my run of cycling. For both activities, iPhone 12 mini is the best fit and it doesn’t drain battery. All the tech reviewers are heavy users and usually don’t understand the average user’s perspective. I don’t check tweets every 5 minutes. Cheers
