I agree with the first take. Young Justice is definitely my favorite animated take on Black Canary. She's pretty comic accurate just like the DCAU version and her design is probably the best out of the non-fishnet Black Canary designs. I also think her as a therapist is really cool and reminds me of when she helped Roy Harper with his drug problem. I also agree she should be a major member of the Justice League, she was a major member of the Satellite era and was the Chairperson of Brad Meltzer's Justice League, one of the best things to come from that series and I'd love to see her act as the leader of at least a version of the League. I even think she should be a founding member of the Justice League like she was in Post Crisis continuity. I don't think DC overhypes her at all. She's the daughter of Dinah Drake, the previous Black Canary who was in the JSA and grew up being trained by her mother and members of the JSA. Wildcat being the one of her major trainers shouldn't be ignored as something unimpressive considering he was also one of the trainers for Batman and Catwoman. He isn't just a boxer, he knows muay thai, capoeira, krav mag and hapkido. And we shouldn't forget onw of her other trainers, Richard Dragon, considered one of the best martial artists in the DC Universe, around the same level as Lady Shiva just less prone to violence. Then there's all the other techniques she would've learned throughout her career from Wonder Woman, Cassandra, Lady Shiva, Batman, etc. I never really cared too much about Sin, I like her but she's not really important to me. I think my problem is that it never really felt organic to me, it feels like a solid idea but rushed arc and Sin basically ends up feeling like a less interesting version of Cassandra or Lian. There also just hasn't been a story that made her work. I don't think the way to make an origin more well known is to change it, just give more visibility to it. She's the daughter of Larry Lance and Dinah Drake, maybe move Dinah Drake out of the Justice Society in World War 2 and into a more modern superhero team like from the 70s or 80s because of how time works in comics. After the original Black Canary retires she and Larry can dedicate their time to raising their daughter and training her in self defense. Move Larry's death to before Dinah becomes Black Canary and have that be the reason her mother doesn't want her to be Black Canary but she does anyways because that's the kind of person she is. She can train under Richard Dragon and Ben Turner before getting approval from her mother and eventually founding the Justice League where she would eventually meet Oliver when he joins. Having her be a villain just feels wrong for her character. I, unfortunately, agree that you can't really give her a solo film or show, she just doesn't really have too many good solo stories for something like that to work, she either has to be in a Green Arrow project, Justice League project, or Birds of Prey project, her character works best when she is with others.
One of the cooler but lesser well-used characters in DC, I think scaling up her power is unnecessary, truth be told, characters like Dinah, Oliver, Wildcat, etc. are so important for story development, they are vulnerable, flexible in the threats they face, which makes for a more interesting character. They are valuable, and Dinah in particular is an awesome character when used correctly
She is a human, she can be killed with bullets. What powerscaling? I'm confused what you mean by that? I'm always confused that this powerscaling thing hardly ever applies to male characters. When I read her, she's got a cool sonic power, is one of the best fighters in DC, and overall gets to do cool stuff every once in a while. @@Unworshipediety hahaha you got a point on that; and with regards to powerscaling, look at it this way: Levels of "power", you got top tier like Superman (like a 10 on a scale), then Hawkman at mid level (like a 6 on a scale), and Kiteman at the bottom (like a 2 on a scale). So someone writes a story where they want Kiteman to be a major character, so they make him tougher or smarter, they put him now on a 5 on that scale. But because you don't want Kiteman beating Hawkman, you raise Hawkman to level 10, now you have to raise Superman to level 15, you just pushed your scale up. That happens when you want everybody to be top tier, you start shuffling characters up that scale, until everybody is overpowered, that would be powerscaling

Black Canary never just trained only by Wildcat. She study and was trained by Richard Dragon and Batman as important mentors. She was even trained by The mentor who trained Lady Shiva and Dinah spent One year of her life training like Lady Shiva. While Lady Shiva was on Birds of Prey being Black Canary and Jade Canary. The beauty of Black Canary is that earn her feats. She didn't start as powerful but written slowly upgrade in human way. There was some writers that try to play with her powers as well. Sometimes she can glide with her screams. She seem to be immune with Sonic effect like Sonic hypnose. And as singer her Canary Cry seems to make a good vocalist making her able to hit hard or near Impossible notes.
This just hit me but I feel she's DC's version of Storm from Marvel . Let Me Explain 😅. For years Storm hasn't been treated well in comics to the best of her abilities or personality. But within the last 6 yrs or so her respect from various writers(Coates, Ewing, Hickman etc) have made her bloom to be bigger than ever. I truly hope a reemergence happens for our girl Canary. For both love action and comics. She's not as strong as a WW but definitely should be treated as one of the most capable to lead if the Trinity isn't around. Hopefully DC is going to do more with her in the coming years

Problem is Dinah has been competing with all 3 people you listed for years before now. Birds of Prey went through this in the 2000s, Dinah and Shiva have been both master and student and rivals to each other so that's not new whatsoever. Dinah was already compared to Batman in that same run. And she fought Deathstroke (though 2v1) in that same run. She's had plenty interactions with these characters that suggest that she is on their level.
Ayyy, my first time in a Hot Take video. I feel like this is probably my most unpopular opinion when it comes to DC Comics because I know some people live and die by this relationship and I definitely get it. When the relationship is at its best it's really good, and you are right, for most people there is really no other pairing with Green Arrow or Black Canary, all of Ollie's other pairings are pretty problematic like Bonnie King and Shado, while the only other Black Canary pairing that pops to my mind is Doctor Midnite while Dinah was in JSA, though that series very rarely did anything with her aside from that relationship. For me though, the thing that makes Oliver interesting was his flaws, his antagonism to those with differing opinions, his abandonment of his children, his infidelity, his womanizing, his selfishness, his stubborness, etc. Because of these flaws though, it makes it hard for me to see him and Dinah really working and the comics have shown this relationship is pretty bad on multiple occasions, hell, it's practically a joke in the comics that they will never last. Not to mention that Dinah is just better without Oliver, a majority of the Birds of Prey comics take place between Dinah's breaks from Ollie. Honestly, I kinda wanna see DC try and make her and Doctor Midnite work again, I think it could work.

Great video. But I have to admit it made me sad. BC ia an awesome character that actually has a lot of depth but has been a victim of bad writing. I think many people get distracted with her being an attractive character and not look to much past that. Remember, shes the daughter of a founding JSA member. Shes been raised qround heroes for her entire life. Which is why she is such a good mentor/therapist to younger heroes. Think of her as the superhero version of Carrie Fisher (princess Leia). She was a daughter of a famous Hollywood actress which gave her access to opportunities but also was an obstacle. I think that couls be developed more. Also, some may not know this but the Watchman character Silk Spectre is based off of Black Canary. I think that says something.

I think black canary can have her own show revolving around her as a legacy character. An animated show centered around Laurel and Dinah by having it be in present time with Laurel but showing the past with Dinah and having it lead up to and connect to current time Edit: a character that would work well against her is the silencer she seemed interested to work with in arrow i feel like there could be more expanded with that
I would like to see her using a MMA fighting style that incorporates her canary cry creatively. When she usually uses her cry, she just plants and yells.
Really underrated character. I could go either way with the power of her cry. I like her portrayed as a great fighter first (partly since I grew up on my dad's silver age comics where she had no powers), and I think it's cool to have her powers be Plan B, with Plan A just being to whoop ass. There are also cool things to be done with amping her powers like you suggested though (temporary or not).
I just don't think she's that interesting outside of the Birds of Prey, JL, and YJ. I love her as the vital therapist. I don't think she should be in relationships but if so I feel like she would be better with Batman.
Here's 3 unpopular opinions ideas, 1. John Stewart GL - I think he's actually my favorite Green Lantern so that could be interesting. 2. Lois Lane - I think it would be cool to see another civilian type character get done. 3. Female Batman Villains in general - that fun little topic(Female Penguin) . As a female myself I have a lot mixed feelings about this topic brought on by Caped Crusader. One thing I find interesting when Bruce Timm first said this was "Batman has no good Villains in general" like dude insulted all Batman's rogues gallery with that line, not just the gals. Remember that, people who defend his comment. A lot of people then pointed out, "well why not just reinvent some of these female Villains that you think are boring." The Timm Defender's response "that's too hard" well it wasn't too hard when he did it for a male Villain, Mr. Freeze. I'm not even saying a gender-swap never works. Calendar Girl is technically a gender-swap of Calendar Man, but there's also more to her than that. Female Penguin is just female and Penguin. The only thing new is giving her stupid kids. Boy kids by the way. Also, real hot take, but aside from Lockup, Roxy Rocket, and Harley Quinn, most of the newly created for Btas Villains kinda suck. Also Also, Bruce Timm dissed Superman's rogues gallery too.
The starting her out as a criminal opinion does have previous canon to back it up. Not for the current Black Canary, but the original Black Canary (her mother) started out her crime fighting career by *posing* as a criminal in order to get in with the gangs that she was trying to break up. That might be an interesting element to bring to the current Black Canary's origin if anyone wanted to go that way.
Also they should keep her being Sterile canon, It'd be really interesting to see a character who cant have kids and that could make for a really Interesting story where in the end she accepts the fact that she cant have kids and just adopts a few more children.
Maybe they should more focus on her motherhood and how to blance life and work, you know, make her more grounded and realistic which dc characters usually lack

I’m a huge Roy fan and I love his character especially when it comes to his daughter liane and I love their story as father and daughter and I want them to bring liane back to the comics and have more stories of them cause I wish they did this in the Cw arrow series because I gotta be honest Cw Roy is cool but he could’ve been better if he stayed on the show and I wish he had more stories in media in general in both live action and anime shows and comics.
Lian is actually back in the comics. She was confirmed alive back in 2020, a teen vigilante going by the name Cheshire Cat. Roy didn't know she was alive until it was revealed to him in Infinite Frontier in 2021 and the two didn't reunite until this year in the Dawn of DC Green Arrow comics. As for the CW show, I don't think they would've really had time to do this even if Roy's actor didn't want to take time off acting due to an identity crisis and dislike for one of the other cast members. Lian would've likely just been treated like every other baby character in the Arrowverse, mostly ignored or bringing in an adult version of them from the future. Roy Harper in Arrow is basically what you get when you take his name and personality but strip basically everything else away from him and give it to Thea and Diggle. Thea is the one with the drug problem that uses the name Speedy while Roy's only drug problem is technically Mirakuru and he never is called Speedy besides in one episode. Diggle is the one that occasionally works with the government, had a young daughter, used guns in combat, and acted as Oliver's first partner, while Roy never had any of those traits.

Just for a particular storyline or instance. Nothing that lasts forever. Just to showcase how uniquely dangerous her powers could be if completely untapped.
I think DC should take Dinah Drake Lance out of the World War 2 version of the JSA and into a time a bit closer to modern time to not make her too old when her daughter is born. Dinah Lance is like 40 in current comics, so she would have to be born in the mid 80s, but if Black Canary was a member of the Justice Society in World War 2 she'd have to be in her late 60s in the mid 80s to give birth to Dinah which is only going to get harder to believe as time goes on and DC continues to refuse aging their characters. It would make more sense if Dinah Drake had her daughter in her late 20s meaning Dinah Drake would have to be born in the late 50s, over a decade after the end of World War 2 meaning in order for her time as a hero to be added, she'd have to be a hero from the late 70s, have her daughter in the mid 80s, and then retire in the early 90s allowing her daughter to become the Black Canary in the early 2000s. If she really needs to be a part of a superhero team, she can be in a team from the 80s, maybe use other Golden Age characters that would make more sense to take out of World War 2.
Man that "but how can she compare to batman" when is hyped to dodge omega beams and fight speedsters is just a joke. I recently watched the JL cartoon and I gotta say that in season 1 they really oversell him (considering the origin of the DCAU makes sense) and in the last darkseid fight it also seems weird how darkseid feels at all his attacks
I love that she's badass and has crazy fighting skills without the need to have some overly cray-cray background. Like in sports, athletes sometimes have that *it* factor without having to come from the hood, or to have overcome some terrible thing in their background... they are just good because they practiced and put in the time. So having her be one of the top teir fighters, I like it. But let's be clear here, when you're not the most popular character sometimes you have to as a writer *give* characters a reason why they're still around and can handle their crap and stand their ground. It's easy to get behind popular characters, who have more time put into them, but to say Canary isn't as good as the writers make her to be is kind of counterproductive.
her and GA are one of the worst couples in comics. GA is constantly treating her like shit and making mistakes and one of the worst examples of this is that one time he cheated on her with Black Lightnings niece and then blamed her for it instead of owning up to it. also she works better when she's on her own instead of being with GA.

Really underrated character. I could go either way with the power of her cry. I like her portrayed as a great fighter first (partly since I grew up on my dad's silver age comics where she had no powers), and I think it's cool to have her powers be Plan B, with Plan A just being to whoop ass. There are also cool things to be done with amping her powers like you suggested though (temporary or not).

I just don't think she's that interesting outside of the Birds of Prey, JL, and YJ. I love her as the vital therapist. I don't think she should be in relationships but if so I feel like she would be better with Batman.

Here's 3 unpopular opinions ideas,
1. John Stewart GL - I think he's actually my favorite Green Lantern so that could be interesting.
2. Lois Lane - I think it would be cool to see another civilian type character get done.
3. Female Batman Villains in general - that fun little topic(Female Penguin) . As a female myself I have a lot mixed feelings about this topic brought on by Caped Crusader. One thing I find interesting when Bruce Timm first said this was "Batman has no good Villains in general" like dude insulted all Batman's rogues gallery with that line, not just the gals. Remember that, people who defend his comment. A lot of people then pointed out, "well why not just reinvent some of these female Villains that you think are boring." The Timm Defender's response "that's too hard" well it wasn't too hard when he did it for a male Villain, Mr. Freeze. I'm not even saying a gender-swap never works. Calendar Girl is technically a gender-swap of Calendar Man, but there's also more to her than that. Female Penguin is just female and Penguin. The only thing new is giving her stupid kids. Boy kids by the way. Also, real hot take, but aside from Lockup, Roxy Rocket, and Harley Quinn, most of the newly created for Btas Villains kinda suck.

The starting her out as a criminal opinion does have previous canon to back it up. Not for the current Black Canary, but the original Black Canary (her mother) started out her crime fighting career by *posing* as a criminal in order to get in with the gangs that she was trying to break up. That might be an interesting element to bring to the current Black Canary's origin if anyone wanted to go that way.

I’m a huge Roy fan and I love his character especially when it comes to his daughter liane and I love their story as father and daughter and I want them to bring liane back to the comics and have more stories of them cause I wish they did this in the Cw arrow series because I gotta be honest Cw Roy is cool but he could’ve been better if he stayed on the show and I wish he had more stories in media in general in both live action and anime shows and comics.
Lian is actually back in the comics. She was confirmed alive back in 2020, a teen vigilante going by the name Cheshire Cat. Roy didn't know she was alive until it was revealed to him in Infinite Frontier in 2021 and the two didn't reunite until this year in the Dawn of DC Green Arrow comics. As for the CW show, I don't think they would've really had time to do this even if Roy's actor didn't want to take time off acting due to an identity crisis and dislike for one of the other cast members. Lian would've likely just been treated like every other baby character in the Arrowverse, mostly ignored or bringing in an adult version of them from the future.
Roy Harper in Arrow is basically what you get when you take his name and personality but strip basically everything else away from him and give it to Thea and Diggle. Thea is the one with the drug problem that uses the name Speedy while Roy's only drug problem is technically Mirakuru and he never is called Speedy besides in one episode. Diggle is the one that occasionally works with the government, had a young daughter, used guns in combat, and acted as Oliver's first partner, while Roy never had any of those traits.

They should utilize Black Canary’s heritage more. Her mom was a great hero in WW2 alongside the JSA
I think DC should take Dinah Drake Lance out of the World War 2 version of the JSA and into a time a bit closer to modern time to not make her too old when her daughter is born. Dinah Lance is like 40 in current comics, so she would have to be born in the mid 80s, but if Black Canary was a member of the Justice Society in World War 2 she'd have to be in her late 60s in the mid 80s to give birth to Dinah which is only going to get harder to believe as time goes on and DC continues to refuse aging their characters.
It would make more sense if Dinah Drake had her daughter in her late 20s meaning Dinah Drake would have to be born in the late 50s, over a decade after the end of World War 2 meaning in order for her time as a hero to be added, she'd have to be a hero from the late 70s, have her daughter in the mid 80s, and then retire in the early 90s allowing her daughter to become the Black Canary in the early 2000s. If she really needs to be a part of a superhero team, she can be in a team from the 80s, maybe use other Golden Age characters that would make more sense to take out of World War 2.

I love that she's badass and has crazy fighting skills without the need to have some overly cray-cray background. Like in sports, athletes sometimes have that *it* factor without having to come from the hood, or to have overcome some terrible thing in their background... they are just good because they practiced and put in the time. So having her be one of the top teir fighters, I like it. But let's be clear here, when you're not the most popular character sometimes you have to as a writer *give* characters a reason why they're still around and can handle their crap and stand their ground. It's easy to get behind popular characters, who have more time put into them, but to say Canary isn't as good as the writers make her to be is kind of counterproductive.

her and GA are one of the worst couples in comics. GA is constantly treating her like shit and making mistakes and one of the worst examples of this is that one time he cheated on her with Black Lightnings niece and then blamed her for it instead of owning up to it. also she works better when she's on her own instead of being with GA.
