I listened to him in Bombay 1970. A very old man was lead onto the stage and he started with some seemingly simple and hesitant beats on the tabla. But it developed into a feast of talas and it was the most vital performance I have ever heard. Great respect for Ustad Ahmedjan Thirakwa.
I see this video literally every single day. Cant help but admire each time the ease of playing of the instrument which Khansaheb demonstrates. The starting Farashbandi is simply amazing and something which Khansaheb really reveled in...I get a spiritual high when I see videos of Khansaheb...its pure meditation...
Nobody can play like him, its true , There are lots of great Ustads but when you think about playing dhin dhina by floating index finger at high speed or playing dhir dhir with trike , or playing tirkit at the kinar with dhin ghin , nobody equals him, he is the only one and unique, MY HIGHEST RESPECT TO GREATES USTADJI FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART, also those who disliked cant be human , most probably somebody left computer open while playing this video with their pets animal on the keyboards, if not than again obviously not human.
TPUstad, I am from Pakistan as well. And Myan Baksh Ji was an incredible teacher no doubt. Thirakwa Sahib was incredible in his playing though. I have never heard another tabla player with his nikass. I watched this tape with Tari Khan Sahib and he was floored by Thirakwa's ease of playing. Thirakwa Khansahib is the best of all time....
HISTORICALLY AN IMMORTAL PIECE. IT'S ELEGANCE, PROWESS, SWEETNESS AND PERFECTION IS GOING TO CONTINUE ENTHRALLING GLOBAL AUDIENCE WITH AWE, NO LESS THAN BEFORE
Thirkwa Sahab plays Dhir Dhir so uniquely, notice how he is flexing his wrist and gathering moment from his forearm, whislt his palm arises from one side rather than the orthodox verticle entry
waaah..ustad ji is a pillar in north indian classical histroy..wordz cannot describe the amazing magic all ustads..or pandit ji's do with..a tabla..and rythm...any person who dedicated there mind ..body and soul to an art sucha as tabla..is praiseworthy and is blessed by the almighty..pls just appreciate the music ..avoid arguing in these music lover's comment section..
superb. I have been a tabla lover for over 20 years now. Never thought I will see this great Ustad's playing. Thank you so much. Past594 you are a superman. to others - don't grab great human beings like this ustad into your petty territorial issues. he belongs to mankind. he created history for all human beings. we all can be proud! His contribution was universal. camon these are basics.
Fantastic indeed! Khansaheb was without doubt the greatest Tabla Player and may well be the greatest of all time! I was fortunate to have heard his solo many times in India.
Thanks to the gentleman whom uploaded this video of Great Thirkava saheb, very gentle in bol chal and so soothing singing tabla. Seen his interview and short play on TV, today in details, not comparison but his one senior disciple Pt Bapu Patwardhan of Mumbai also plays like him fingers and sound too are similar.
Those who dis like the videos are mostly the people who follow A particular style of tabla and never appreciate the other Baaz or style...but end of the day tabla is tabla ....
God manifests himself in so many different forms - it takes a person of humility who can see god in his different forms. When I see and hear Ustad Ahmed Jan Thirakwa I see and hear God.
honestly i have only heard one recording of mian Qadir Baksh...but I have heard tabla players play his composition..the skill level required to even comprehend them is veryyyy high..he was one of the best composers...and one of the best tabla players of all time....the diffrence in style is the main thing, its hard to compare...but in there own gharanas they both are the best....
Leonardo, this is a fantastic instrument to play devised by cutting an Indian drum (mridang) into two halves because earlier in courts the musicians were not allowed to sit before a king & they had to perform standing.Tabla had an ease to play while standing by hanging two halves by your neck.It is now an integral accompanying instrument for beats in Indian music.
it is interesting to note that tirakwa's posture is rock solid steady while his fingers are a blur. the recording is great for those days but still unclear, however tirakwa's every syllable is heard with clarity. god is in the detail..
The taal refers to the time cycle, such as teen taal is 16 beat cycle (with 3 hand claps). Of playing the tabla - the smaller is the tabla and larger is duggi. Tabla is an Indian derivation from an ancient arabic drum which is why the name is arabic (tabla). The Mridangam was an Indian drum and the present day tabla was derived from both of these types. There are different syllables that can be played, and when put together with a time cycle you can play as Kayda (Qaidah - arabic for base).
I'm a big fan of classical music, but one thing I've noticed on so many videos on youtube is that people are arguing over nationality rather then the music itself. You should all be ashamed of yourselves. Music knows no boundaries, the essence of it brings stillness in one's mind and heart. Guess you've never really heard music then. Great post by the way. I can only imagine what this felt live.
The Tabla was derived from the Pakhawaj (the North Indian counterpart or the Mridangam). The Name Tabla is Arabic. Kayda also means 'rule' or 'law' in Hindi, relating to the type of composition (Kayda followd some basic but rigid rules). There are many styles such as Peshkar, and older styles such as Paran, Gat and Chalan.

He's ripping the Tabla apart at a ripe old age of 70! Insane! I prefer the older generation, there was a methodical and precise way they went about playing the Drut and Athidrut Layas, not like artists today who want to move straight to the "showing off" instead of going through the traditional path of Kayadas Tukras Peshkaars Relas etc
@selectivesloth I think its his thirakwaness. He has a personal way of presenting this stuff. He is owning the instruments voice so much, along with the diversity of its gharanas, and making his own artistic statement. I don't think its anything technical, one of the greatest observations i heard was that thirakwa's feel was very WIDE. I find that description nice to compare against someone like kanai dutta or even swapan-ji who have a very tight sound...just my 2cents

Just a tiny but important information. He was born in 1880 and was 82 when this recording was done. I was blessed that he lived in my home for the last 10 years of his life. And was further blessed that he shared his entire life's experiences with me and my late father.
Hey! Hopefully you have found your answers. If not, try to locate pandit Narayan Joshi (He was a ganda bandh chela of ustad Thirakwa sahib - He is also the Son of Pandit Gajananbua Joshi) in Nashik, Maharashtra or Pandit Anand Shidhaye in Poona Maharashtra. Both were trained for decades by ustad Thirakwa sahib (Mhatara - old man - as they used to call him)
