    I honestly don't think this movie could be made today. Getting all the rights to those characters now might be impossible, and even back then a few got left out. The cool thing was that most of the original voice actors were still alive to reprise characters they first performed 40 or 50 years earlier

    The "playing pattycake" scene is multi-layered three ways.
    1. The "adult" meaning ("Playing pattycake" IS Golden Age Hollywood lingo AND classic cartoon code for extra-martial affairs). So, the scandalous actions everyone was thinking of actually carry some weighty truth, given R. K. Maroon's preceding statement towards Roger, saying, "Take comfort son, you're not the only man whose wife has 'played pattycake' on 'em".
    2. Literal metaphor (Marvin Acme & Jessica Rabbit playing literal pattycake to cater to the film's hard PG rating, because if this 1988 film were rated M+/AO/NC-17 like its contemporary _Cool World_ was when it came out in 1992, then Rule 34 between the head of ToonTown & Roger's buxom wife would've been on full display for everyone to see).
    3. Visual gag (Roger going through the photos super fast, causing them to move like an old-school animator's flipbook).

    80s PG. Can’t do much better than that. And the way hand drawn animation (something impossible to find these days) is combined seamlessly with live action is unmatched. Zero CG was used and it holds up in 2023 better than most films today. No CGI film can duplicate this.

    Roger Rabbit is purely a Disney character. He was created specifically for this movie, and has since made casual appearances in Disney canon.

    • @TherealRNOwwfpooh
      @TherealRNOwwfpooh 9 місяців тому +1

      No, he's not. He was created by Gary Wolfe for his _Who Censored Roger Rabbit_ novel & its sequels (which were more so in line with the movie rather than the first book, the events of which were retconned in the first sequel book _Who P-P-P-Plugged Roger Rabbit_ as a nightmare Jessica had). The film version, however, is co-owned by both Disney AND Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment.

    Fun fact: The subplot for this film was a proposed second sequel to "Chinatown". The Fist movie being about water & power. The second film was about Real estate & oil. The third was about Mass transit and the entertainment industry.

    1. First time I saw this was in the middle of the ocean. My ship (USS Tripoli LPH-10) was doing a Tiger Cruise. That's where crew members could bring "male only" family/friends to join us from Hawaii to San Diego. There were displays set up on the hanger bay. For entertainment there was an area to watch movies. This was one of them.
    2. There had to be equal time for Disney and HB characters.
    3. LOVE the adult inuendo😈
    4. Christopher Lloyd as the heavy. 😎
    5. One of the cartoon bullets is the voice of Pat Buttram. He played Mr. Haney on "Green Acres".
    6. This was Mae Questel's/Betty Boop's third to last gig. Her last was" Christmas Vacation". (RIP)😇
    7. The tunnel going into Toon Town is the same one they use in "Back to the Future II".
    8. Favorite character is the Baby🤣

    The movie was set in 1946 and they limited all the cartoon characters that had only appeared by then (plus the ones they made up for the film like Roger and Jessica). This movie was made by Disney but they worked with Warner Brothers to get use of the beloved Looney Tune characters like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and Porky Pig. The two head cartoons of each studio had to be given equal time, which is why Daffy and Donald act together in the piano scene, and Bugs and Mickey share equal time with the falling scene.
    The story is told in the style of "film noir," popular at the time, of a hard-boiled hard-drinking detective and the fem fatale who may or may not be evil. Some of these were played by Veronica Lake, who had a very distinctive hair style of partially covered her face, as on Jessica.

    About Judge Doom. They go into more detail in the book the movie is based on. His real name is Baron Von Rotten, a character acting toon that played every villain since silent animations, he even played the hunter that killed Bambi's mom. He was known for getting so immersed in roles that he was known as "A Toon With 1000 Faces." Due to an accident playing a caricature of Hitler for Mother Goose Step, he was severely injured in an explosion, emerging from months of treatment with inexplicably glowing red eyes and driven murderously insane from exclusively playing villains. After robbing the toontown bank and killing Eddie's brother, he found out about Cloverleaf's attempt at buying up the LA railway system and the failed development project to create a freeway. He took the money, invested into Cloverleaf rigged the toontown election to be the judge and devised his plan to complete the freeway, destroying toontown which blocked the path to Pasadena.

    • @VirtualBabe29
      @VirtualBabe29 3 місяці тому +1

      That must have been a novelization of the movie, because the movie was (very loosely) based on the book Who Censored Roger Rabbit by Gary Wolfe. Wolfe himself stated that the movie was far better than his book. Doom was not even a character in the book.

    So many reviewers watch this and say “ this is a kids’ movie?!??! 😳😳😳” the answer is NO! As an animator I get so mad when people assume animation is for kids. Even the first Disney, Warner brothers and mgm animated shorts were made for grown ups hence why they were violent and had drinking, smoking and sexual innuendo in them. And this movie was made under the studio called Touchstone Pictyres which was a studio specifically made by Disney CEO Michael Eisner because he wanted to make “ Disney” movies for grownups. Look up that studio’s filmography . Not a single child’s movie in the list. Animation does not equate to “ for kids.”

    There is significant political satire underlying this movie. Although Eisenhower got the Interstate highway system started in 1956 (based on the projected needs of the military in case of WWIII, like highways to transport nuclear missiles and land planes) this movie is based on the earlier change.
    Rail transportation, including trolleys, unlike other modes of transportation in America like highways, canals, and airports, and unlike all the rest of world, were privately-owned, having to pay taxes and make a profit. The biggest electrified railway system in the country was Pacific Electric ("the red cars") in the southern California area. However, all urban areas, big and small, in the early 1900's were extensively crisscrossed by numerous trolley car routes. Trolleys facilitated movement in and out of the downtown, allowing the rise of the classic city after 1900.
    But during the '30's and '40's, GM, Goodyear, and Standard Oil set up individual holding companies (like the fictitious Cloverleaf) all over with the express purpose of buying the local trolley car systems to put them out of business. So people would have to take buses or more likely, buy their own autos. This plan was pretty successful as you can see looking around the US today. This isn't some fanciful conspiracy system as in the 1950's, the three companies were convicted of this, but fined a mere $2,000, a pittance and way too late.
    The freeways were not just routed to bring up people from the surrounding areas but also were purposely designed to slice through neighborhoods of marginalized peoples, or cut them off from the downtown. But ultimately, they led to the downtowns becoming the neglected "inner cities" while shopping centers and malls on the outskirts flourished
    There is a lot of discussion on this, both pro and con, all over UA-cam. Just search on "Roger Rabbit" and "trolleys."

    • @0okamino
      @0okamino 9 місяців тому

      Perhaps worse, even with inflation, that fine would still be less than $30,000. Corporations like those blow their noses on amounts way bigger than that. Less of a slap on the wrist, more like a pat on the back and a wink.

    Roger was partly inspired by Looney Tunes (particularly Bugs Bunny) but he isn't a Looney Tunes character. The cartoon at the beginning of this movie also owes a lot of inspiration to Tom & Jerry cartoons (because of the violent gags). The production company that made this movie is a subsidiary of Disney, so Roger is actually a Disney character. The movie was based on a novel that was spoofing theatrical cartoons of this era.
    I think the hippo ballerina was from Fantasia, but I'm not sure if she had a name in that movie. You were right, the black and white cow in the cattle call was Clarabelle Cow, a longtime supporting character to Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. And the penguin waiters were from Mary Poppins and they were waiters in that movie as well.
    For toons, pattycake is the equivalent of what you thought they were doing.
    You were right, the cowboy with the long red whiskers was not Speedy Gonzales, he was fellow Looney Tune, Yosemite Sam, a frequent foe of Bugs Bunny.
    Actually, the freeway plot was based on reality even before Eisenhauer. On the History Detectives on PBS, they uncovered the fact that the car, tire, and oil companies got together and bought out all the streetcar companies in most cities so they could replace them with bus companies that would increase their sales, and that led to Eisenhauer's interstate highway system.
    This movie was really mostly for adults who grew up with these classic cartoon characters, and it was nostalgic for that reason. And it's also nostalgic for fans of old noir mystery movies. But you're right, they also put in a lot of gags for both adults and kids so it could be enjoyed by all. And really, a lot of the old Looney Tunes were written like that.
    As far as anything similar, there were brief combinations of live action and cartoons in both of Disney's previous Mary Poppins and Bedknobs and Broomsticks. Since then, the only similar movies have been Warner's three Space Jam movies combining Looney Tunes with live action sports stars. But Roger is the only movie where they managed to get permission to combine cartoon characters from ALL the classic animation studios (including Disney, Warner Bros, MGM, Paramount, Fleischer Studios, and Walter Lantz). Crossovers of so many characters is so epic, it probably won't ever happen again.

    Roger, Jessica, and many others are purpose-created for this movie. Getting license permission from Looney Tunes and Disney required both get equal screen time, that's why we see Donald and Daffy together, Bugs and Mickey paired, and even Porky and Tinkerbell. Other properties, like Betty Boop, are not owned by eithet LT or Disney., so Betty didn't have to share her screen time.
    The hard part for the actors was looking at the empty space where the Toon would be later on since most people can't focus their eyes on nothing. Most times, a stagehand would have a ball on a stick to represent where the actors should look. Bob Haskins, playing Valiant, was able to actually look at and focus without the prompt, saving the pist-production time otherwise needed to erase the part of the stick the Toon didn't conceal.

    to answer your question Katherine rather or not if children were watching this film, most likely they were, and I was one of them, I'm not too sure who introduced this to me because this film came out in 1988, so I think it might have been either my mom or my grandma that showed this film to me, and this was one of my favorite childhood movies, there were so many moments in this where I've always cracked up hysterically, especially the scene where Eddie was making the weasels laugh uncontrollably LOL, but the main thing that made this film really special was not only the comedy and the mystery, and not only that they made classic cartoon characters exist alongside humans was the fact that they made the Disney characters and the Warner brother characters crossover with each other, which that's something to my knowledge never been done with cartoon characters, and I think Rodger was probably a combination of every single cartoon character imaginable, which is probably why he's not a part of neither Warner Brothers or Disney, I unfortunately wasn't alive in 1988 when this film was released, but there is a film very similar to this that I actually did have the opportunity to experience, it's called Looney tunes back in action, and it stars one of my favorite actors Brendan Fraser and the comedian Steve Martin, which released back in 2003, I highly recommend checking it out, not only it's funny but it's also action-packed, the best combination of a movie in my opinion.

Another Animation/live action movie that'has a little bit darker storyline is Cool World starring Brad Pitt and Kim Basinger as the voice of Holly Wood. Also checkout some movies with Kathleen Turner in them like Undercover Blues, Romancing the Stone, Jewel of the Nile, and V.I. Warshowski.

    For something somewhat close, but definitely not for kids, try Cool World with Brad Pitt and art by Ralph Bakshi.

    Not true about the plunger thing. I have one that's only used for the kitchen sink and the other one I only use in the bathroom.

    You should watch the 2022 film Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers which is a spiritual sequel to Roger Rabbit.

    OMG did you seriously say you were cringing from a cartoon the likes of loony tunes? It's not supposed to be taken with our realities logic or physics. It is just to entertain.
    Trash talking Betty Boop, without thinking of the time for context. I've never cared for her either, but I realize it was probably quite liked in its time.
    You really need to try and see things from a different perspective, see how Roger see's the PattyCake as something more than a human would.
    Being drunk had nothing to do with the guy not ratting out Roger.
    This was totally for kids, nothing worse than any other classic cartoons.
    I found the mother's understanding and reactions so much more, had some great incredulous faces.

    If your mind was boggled by kids watching this your jaw must be dropping at what was rated G and PG before they created PG13 in 1984 because of the hige uproar over Gremlins and Indiana Jones & The Temple of Doom being rated PG. 😂😂
    Parents had been complaining about violence, etc in PG movies since Jaws came out in '75. It kept building over the next 9 years but the 2 movies I mentioned above were the final straw for parents and voila..PG13. The first PG13 movie was Red Dawn in 1984.
