- In this video I'll show you how to properly inspect optic fiber cables with a fiber scope, and how to properly clean the fibers with the correct tools.

Nice video, I didn't really know all that about fibers and I do feel I should have :)
I've used similar push type cleaning pens. Apparently they have a roll of adhesive tape inside that literally pulls the dust and dirt off of the fibre. Cheap but essential tool!
I'll have to see what these ones have, these look to have a bit of rope inside that wipes past and rotates against the end of the fiber as you push down.
great video, thanks
Great Video.!
great video
With those cartridge type cleaners you should only wipe once. If you wipe the fiber over the same area multiple times there's a small but significant chance that the fiber will get scratched.
The push type cleaning pens I've used automatically progress the cleaning tape on it's spool with each click. This ensures there is fresh tape surface with each click.
I'm not sure if the pens in the video are the same??
Yeah, the pen type work that way. The other type advances as the protective cover slides open, reveling a clean patch of the tape. You generally wipe the fiber in a specific direction, and only do it once, and then let it close. It's not actually a big deal though. In my experience the connectors have to take some serious abuse to get damaged. I've cleaned tons of connectors with kimwipes and acetone, and that breaks all of the rules but generally gets the job done. Almost all of the damaged fibers I've seen were just snapped, and the connector was perfectly fine.
good job sir
very good
Many thanks
very nice informative video. can you do a review of the fiber tester and camera?
Will that fiber microscope work when connected to a PC?
Never mind; it says on the website that software is available for PC and Android.
Do we need to disconnect both end of fiber cable when cleaning?
Hi, I enjoyed the video. Could you please give us some perspective as to how much the equipment shown costs? You mentioned those LC cleaners are "cheap" but the cheapest one I could find on Digikey (CCT-125) is $120 CAD.
The cleaning pens here in Japan sell for about ¥6000 each (which is cheap when it comes to fiber optic equipment....), but they are so-so for cleaning effectiveness.
I prefer to use cartridge style cleaners when I don't need to clean an optic etc.
As for the scope/OTDR, they cost tens of thousands of dollars... a second hand scope usually runs a few hundred dollars at least.
Just the adapter tips can cost hundreds of dollars new...
Fiber optic stuff is always really expensive...........
@@NearFarMedia Yes, I'm not desensitized to those kinds of numbers and suppliers/wholesalers either don't exist to "prosumers" or simply don't advertise the costs. I appreciate the response! Are those pens refillable cartridges or are they single-use consumables?
Yeah, even second hand on ebay, these scopes and stuff are too expensive for my taste, luckily work supplies the gear for me. :)
The cleaning pens are not refillable, but the box shaped cartridge cleaners that I prefer are.
@@NearFarMedia I accidentally discovered fs.com which I'm sure you're aware of and their prices are definitely more competitive but it seems there's a lot of differing opinions on the quality of their goods. Do you have any experience with their products and which ones were good and which weren't?
Huh, interesting.
We use Sticklers brand cleaners that look the same as the FS brand Neoclean MTP and the SC/LC cleaners.
The sticklers ones are good, so I assume the FS ones of the same design will be good too.
hi how much is the microscope camera with monitor. the one you showing.
It looks like they sell for a bit under $2000 second hand.
Brand new I'm not 100% sure, but they can reach $10,000 depending on what optional modules you specify for the cable types you want to test.
How can i buy for the cleaner and inspection?
Head to ebay for second hand, or save up a BIG wad of cash to buy new from a local distributor.
Question: why is this cleaning pen actually called "one-Click-Cleaner" by one of the manufacturers Fujikura?
Answer: because one "click" per cleaning process is sufficient. In fact the strip at the top end rotates 90 degree while cleaning.
And each click costs money!
And they often need 10 or more clicks to actually clean.... :P
They just dab the end of the fiber and don't do such a great job, I hate them. I much prefer using the cartridge cleaners that let me wipe the end of the fiber on the cleaning tape.
@@NearFarMedia I have acutally done some "studies" for myself comparing the different methods of cleaning: cassette cleaner, Click Cleaner and tissues and also at patch panels inside the adapters to get to the pigtail inside of the panel I used the buds. And my results were pretty clear: the Click Cleaner performed overall the best. You may question this test being representative and maybe you are right but it is the best I have seen so far. I was surprised as well as I was almost convinced that the cassette has to be the best.

You achieved a clean end but that tool is a ONE click not a 500 click. Click it once slowly and it should be clean so long as the contamination is low. Yes they are cheap but not only are you wasting your tool, you are potentially scratching/pitting your cable end. Severe contamination + aggressive dry cleans = permanent contamination. I’m not one to usually comment on stuff but I have a decade experience in the construction/installation of fiber networks, and it’s a major pet peeve of mine because there is an operational cost to everything, all the way down to every click of that tool and improper/over use leads to breaking tools and cables which means the project costs more and the pay is less.
The day these 'one click' tools are actually one click is the day I'm the queen of France.... 😂
The brand shown in the video is the worst, Sticklers brand is marginally better, but barely.
We have abandoned using the blue cleaning pens shown in the video, they are so crap. I work for a multinational company, so it's not just me who has problems with them, but the entire company worldwide...
IBC can clean in one click but I agree. There are better options. Corning or Fujikura will most definitely clean in one click and I challenge you to test your fibers after ONE click. It’s doing more than you think, I promise.
One-Clicks have their name because they most often only need one click. With the current cost of the One-Clicks, each click costs 12 cents USD!
I have found they consistently need more that one click, sometimes much more.... At least I don't pay for them. :D
clean until it works...:/ thanks..:)
Ive juat gotta say I would not ever pump that cleaner that hard. High risk.
If a bit of string on the end of a bit of plastic can scratch your fiber, you need to purchase better fibers.
Nearly 10 years in the game and I have yet to scratch or damage a single fiber.
@NearFarMedia Tell that to Raytheon or Northrop Grumman. Licensed avionics technician. Just giving my 2 cents. QC at any airline would have a heart attack if they saw that. Maybe just ignorance on our end, but we are trained to clean with great delicacy when you're dealing with extremely expensive fiber that cannot be repaired.
