  • In this video I take my Hillman SuperMinx out onto the highway/expressway to show how it sounds and performs at higher speed. I discuss the issue that I had with the ignition timing and how I fixed this, how the braking and suspension performs and how the engine cooling system performs in hotter weather.

    My father had one in the early seventies. He liked it , as a kid I loved it and cleaned it . We went camping , with a small trailer . Great memories

    Your roads look to be in very good condition compared to our English ones, I'm slightly jealous.

      Hi, thanks for the comment. Yes the roads are in good condition on the route that I took for this video. However, we had a big cyclone hit the region in February, which caused a lot of destruction to the area including the undermining the integrity of some of the roads and taking out bridges. There have been alot of large pot holes on the main highways and state highways, which is taking a lot of resource to repair. I lived in the UK for 3 years and thought the roads especially the motorways were in good condition. Thanks for watching.

    Old Hillmans are about as exciting as watching paint dry!

      I don't mind watching paint dry, especially if I have done the paint job. Cheers for watching.

      Better than being glued to the computer in your mother's spare room..... Takes a real man to know how to tune and run one .

    I used to own the replacement Super Minx car that was a Hillman Hunter, or specifically the Singer Vogue model.

    I think you may have a cable drive speedo that just requires removing and lubricating. It will be connected from the gearbox to the back of the Speedo. Remove and replace would be ideal - but may be fun trying to find one!
    Lovely motor by the way and loving sunny NZ. Keep the videos coming!

    • @everything-hillman66
      @everything-hillman66  Рік тому

      Thanks for the comment. Yes I was also thinking that the cable may need lubricating. I think you can still buy them out of the UK. Maybe Speedy spares, but would have to check that.

    Loving your videos actually now there are a couple more Superminxs in Hawkes bay my estate and another in Clive and one thats off the road currently but the lady sees the Clive estate often, Im guessing youre running 13 radials even with the 3.89;1 sedan diffheaf your speedo will be reading at least 10kmh fast, mine has the same issue but 5kmh fast I have 14 inch Michelin rims all round, keep on cruising your classic they are great old cars

    • @everything-hillman66
      @everything-hillman66  Рік тому

      Thanks for the comment. Yes the car is original as far as I am aware. The rims are 13 inch. The car was brought from Hamilton, but originated from Tauranga.

      @@everything-hillman66 Yes it looks quite original, however when new it would have has xply tyres which have a much taller sidewall I had an original xply with my parts that came with my car it was the same size as a 195x65x15 as measured against the Citroen I had then, your speedo will be out quite a lot just go for a cruise with a GPS and take a look, they do go well those cars mine now has a weber carb which woke it up a lot cruises happily at 100kmh

    My Superminx is living in Hawkes Bay its been there since new it doesnt run hot in hot weather you might need the radiator cleaned out, mine has power brakes, oh and my car is an estate, speedo is a bad cable they are I have some spare instruments if your one is knackered

    • @everything-hillman66
      @everything-hillman66  Рік тому

      That day was really hot and the water temp rose slightly above normal at idle. The radiator has been fully flushed out, I wonder if maybe there is some sediment in the block.

    I would remove the thermostat remove radiater hose from top tank of radiater and bottom hose of radiator and reverse flush with heater turned on , till water out of block comes out clean, then reverse flush radiater from the bottom hose useing a hose and wrapping a rag around it to force the crap out of the radiater untill the water flows clean . Then still with thermostat out i would refit radiator hoses and fill the cooling system with straight white vinegar and leave it for a week then flush the system again with a hose, reinstall thermostat and fill with toyota red coolant not the toyota pink coolant IMHO

      Thanks for the tip. Even though it does not have a heater, it does have a heater core. The heater was an optional extra. Thanks for the tips though on flushing out the block. Thanks for the comment and for watching.
