I’ve seen a lot of reviews on this and it’s not looking good...thanks for your honest opinion...I’ve seen a ton on the shelves as well and the price tag right now during a finacial crisis...I’m going with the 12yr and 9yr
I didn't get any peanut notes from the 15. For me, it was straight sweet fruit. The 15 beats the 12 for me everyday of the week. My store pick 15-16 (bottled in '04) was much darker and a lot of oak, strong vanilla and light sweet fruit. Amazing how every palette is sooooooooo different. Great review! You're causing some real deep thought! Oh, it's selling for $85 in Indianapolis. I really enjoy the 15, even against my love for the 12.
so glad i've found somebody else that appreciates the 9 like i do. super underrated bottle imo - though i'm kind of glad it's not the hype generation machine like ER and is always readily available.
Just got mine at Costco here in San Diego, the minute I got home I popped it open, your review was spot on, felt the $90 in price was hard to justify (old school), but truthfully had no buyers remorse once I got into it, very good product.
I particularly enjoyed this comparison because at the moment my absolute favorite bourbon is KC 12 with the 9yr single barrel close on its heels. And with the price of the 9yr SB it's very hard to beat. The value of both of these is fantastic.
I have the KC SBR 120, 12y and 15y and I rate them as such.....SBR 120, 15y then 12y. The SBR 120 is sweeter and has more of that in your face Beam profile. The 12 and 15 are so close I go back and forth via several sips before I can really tell the difference (at least my bottles) but the 15y seems a bit more complex and deeper/sweeter dark fruit notes than the 12y which I like. IMO you can't go wrong with any of them.....KC still is the secret that most pass on and has the most bang for your buck. Great job on the review brother...keep it up!
I'm glad to hear that this one opens up a bit with time. I had the same thoughts as you with the neck pour, I felt like it lacked the depth I have come to expect with the 15yr picks. I'm looking forward to revisiting this. Great review and comparison.
@@TheMashandDrum I need to pick up the 12yr. Sounds like it has a lot more going for it, especially for nearly half the price. In the meantime, I'll keep buying and drinking every 14-15yr pick that I see, haha. Cheers!
I had to watch this one again since it popped up in our grocery store at $119. KC 12 at $64 has been sitting on the shelf for a couple years along with the old label 9 yr 120. I know now to get one of the KC 12's. Thanks again for your professionalism in bourbon tasting.
I think you are spot on about the 12 year. I picked up a bottle a few weeks ago and finally cracked it open. What a wonderful surprise. A big fan of the Knob Creek 9 year but the 12 year to me makes an almost perfect bourbon. Coats the palate with a great mouth feel, vanilla and caramel come thru with a bit of a long slightly oaky/cinnamon finish. Just an amazing sipping bourbon. One of my all time favorites. I have had more expensive bourbons that fall way short of what the 12 year delivers. I have thought about getting the 15 year but your review will steer me away. I will stay with the 12 year. Dean
Last summer and fall when I was traveling a bit I found a number of really good well-aged store picks, all between 12 and 15 years. My favorite is the "Missouri" that's 15 years and 4 months. I grabbed three of those babies. I've never had a bad store pick of these old Knob Creek single barrels. I think I'll stick with them rather than looking for the 15 year, especially given the price points on these store picks. Hope to find more of them!
12 and 9 are outstanding. I have 9 yrs barrel proof didn't try this yet ;-). also i got knob creek rye cask strength barreled in 2008. Need to try this as well
Haven't tried the 15, but wife and I tried the 12, standard 9, and single barrel store pick. She was blind to the pours and I wasn't. The hands down loser was the 12 for both of us which surprised me given the amount of praise it received.
I know I'm super late to this video but i really wish you tossed that 2001 special edition into the mix. I have a batch 2 and its damn delicious, going to try and pick up another one tomorrow.
$100 does seem like kind of a ripoff when you can find 120 proof store picks close to that age statement. I really hope they don't phase out these amazing store picks. One I got last year that was 15 years 1 month was one of the best whiskeys I've ever had. Great comparison video!
I should've watched the end of the video. In concept you are definitely correct, it is a good price for 15Y compared to the overall market. But compared to their own store picks and the 12Y it is overpriced.
The 12 year is a great pour, but the 2001 limited edition, released in 2016 is F'in Amazing...age statement claims 14 years. Its sweet and smooth... the 12 year has a bit of a Kentucky hug, where the 2001 LE that hug is ironed out and its a great sipper... grab one if ya find it...
I am lucky to have found several 14-15 year picks of Knob Creek and none have disappointed. I just picked up the 15 year Knob Creek today at MSRP - afraid I might be a little disappointed, but we'll see. Great review, as always.
Glad to hear you talk about a whisky opening up with a little air getting to it! Good advice not to over rate the neck pour! I would like to see bottom of the bottle reviews for a better overview of the whisky??? Maybe. Cheer's
I really like your channel a lot, just discovered it a few weeks ago but what a treasure! I'm mostly a Wellers fan but a friend introduced me to Knob Creek 9 year a few years ago and I've become quite fond of it. I found a single barrel reserve 9 year 120 proof Knob Creek that I like and would love to see you do a review on it. I'm curious to hear your opinion of it. Again, love the channel, you've opened my eyes to a world of bourbons and i'm learning quite a bit in the mean time. Keep up the good work and CHEERS!
Appreciate that man! Hopefully you appreciate the history and tasting without getting too bored. I love the 9 year single barrel. Definitely reviewing soon.
@@TheMashandDrum The history is the part that I love about your reviews, you're giving me an education on great whiskeys that I've been missing and wouldn't be getting otherwise. Hope you had a great birthday, enjoyed the live show on Wednesday, I definetly be watching more of your channel in the future!
Nice honest review Jason. I am fortunate to live in an area that offers a lot of Knob Creek picks and I tend to purchase those rather than the regular offerings. A few of the picks have been 14yr. Those have been excellent!
Tried the 12 and now the 15. Hard to pick up either over the 9yr SB for the price... Also, I seem to find 9 to 12 years is the sweet spot for most bourbon. What about you? I've noticed a number of people seem to feel the same way..so is it possible the bigger age statements might just be a waste of otherwise good bourbon at a 'younger' age?
I would agree. I've had a few bourbons that are really good past 12 years. Also depends on the Distillery. Buffalo Trace seems to do well with age. I think ultra aged bourbons from certain Distilleries can definitely be a waste.
For $100 versus the picks I just don't get it. I have a 15 yr pick and a 14yr 8 month pick and they are amazing. For $40 to $50 for the pick. It's a pass for me. Good review and completely agree.
I know you did this a year ago but I was just able to pick this up at MSRP in Memphis but now wondering if I should try it instead of opening based on your review. I am fairly new in this arena so maybe try it anyway?
There was alot of batch variation in these. So my bad bottle was not great but I had another that was alot better. So unfortunately you won't know until you open it. Lol.
@@TheMashandDrum understood and thank you for the reply. Your channel is great and keep it up. As you say all the time with different barrels etc it may not be the same for all.
The 12 is great, but in between the 12 and 15 sits the 2001 LE... it has more flavor and less Alcohol burn... and then the 15 year falls off and gets a little tannic, and drying... I think the 2001LE (14 years) is the sweet spot...
Great review man. I think I align with you on everything stated. I’ll pass and stick with the 12 and aged store picks. I also think the 9 small batch is underrated.
I just recently picked up two Knob single barrel store picks that were aged 13 yrs and 10 mths. They were at a Binny's in the far northwest exburbs of Chicago. Like you speculated, I'm thinking that these extra aged store picks might be going away because they are getting harder and harder to find. These two 120 proofers were $45 each. I can still get the standard release 9 year single barrel for $37 which is still so flavorful. Makes it hard to justify dropping a Benjamin on one 15 yr old 100 proof.
My local Bevmo just put out more of their 2018 14 year store pick and I picked it up fast for $65 after tax, and at 120 proof! So it'd be hard to spend the $100 for something 1 year younger, a blend/batch, and at lower proof.
Nice man i also had a bevmo store pick but does not have a label that says when it was bottled and distilled. It just had that silver rectangle sticker that says picked by bevmo with freddie noes signature. Is that what you had?

Very interesting review. I quite enjoyed the 12, but I think it's a one and done for me at $60 when I can still get those great SiB picks. Not sure I'll be grabbing the 15 either.
Great review! I’m struggling a bit with some of the recent higher dollar offerings. Recently grabbed the B520 ECBP and Larceny. They are great high proof pours for $65 in my area. Bookers price increase is aggravating to me but expected from their statement a few years ago. Cheers Jason!🥃👍🇺🇸
I hunt out different picks. I know this sound ridiculous but some of them I prefer over the A120 ECBP. Right now I have 14 year, 11 year and 9 year picks.
So first the age statements were "disappearing" because there was "not enough stock" and now they are not only re-appearing, but getting older. I've been saying since 2019: there's a GLUT of aging whiskies, both in US and Scotland, and the industry is just being clever about hiding that. I don't blame them, just lowering prices would be a bad move. I like what Beam is doing, they're releasing unfiltered editions at higher strength, upping the proof on budget editions, while also pleasing the collectors and "rare" bourbon chasers. Nice. Welcome to the Whisky Loch 2.0 :)
Opened the 12 on Saturday. Definitely had a ton of nut funk on the nose. I'm not normally great at identifying smells, but that was obvious. Very good overall!
Great review! I feel Like it’s kind of a money grab, the 12 I thought was really solid and a great price and proof. The single barrel picks up to almost 15 years have been amazing at 1/2 the price... doesn’t seem worth the $100 price tag?... although the sexy red label and box screams take my money lol Cheers 🥃
If you see this bottle just buy it, the 15yr is currently equal to the cost of three to four 9yr bottles, in 10 yrs it isn't going to matter whether the 9yr tasted better, the 15yr age statement will most likely outpace inflation allowing you to sell it for a price that gets you three times as many 9yr future bottlings or more.
I feel like Remus 5 beats this out as far as value goes. Or maybe I’m trying to convince myself because I don’t wanna spend 100-125 for a bottle of this lol.
I get a lot of crap from the Booker's snobs but the Knob Creek brand is the most consistently good bourbon from the Beam brand. Bookers is just way to hit and miss. Four releases a year and you get one that is spectacular, two that are good but not worth what they charge and at least one release that is subpar at BEST. Knob Creek single barrel at 120 proof at half the price is a much better deal.
I just bought a knob creek store pick last month that was 14 years and 7 months old. Only paid $49.99. It was phenomenal to say the least!

Couldn't agree more.
That 12 year is top shelf stuff for $60
I paid $55 for the 9yr Single Barrel. How does Single Barrel change this?
Well this is batched and not a single barrel. Plus this is 100 proof as compared to your 120 proof SB.
Daaaaaamn I’m jealous.
For me there's knob creek and everything else is just to break up the monotony a bit.
Not to be a smart ass but my knob Creek store pick single barrel is 15 years six months and 18 days LOL 😂
My 25th busted up during shipment. I was disappointed
Oh man that's rough. Sorry to hear that
mmmm....knob creek..
Single barrell is superior
The wax should devalue the bottle by about $30. I've spilled so much Knob Creek because of their stupid wax.
Lol! Your not the first person who has said that
Looks like another shelf turd from Beam Suntory....
