I remember watching this episode as a 12YO kid when it originally aired on Lifetime some 30 years ago...stuck with me all these years, for obvious reasons. 😆 Nice of David to tell Jeff and Barb that he understood their intended strategy, and his reveal of their grand total was priceless!
It is always a HORRIBLE strategy to leave your basket and go for the shopping list items. The shopping list items are fool’s gold in general. It’s always better to just shop, and grab a bonus along the way. My strategy would be Meat items -> grind coffee while grabbing cans of coffee and nesquik -> cheese wedges and salami -> take cart back with bonus in tow -> Detergent and Diapers -> Big jugs of oil -> bag of candy. That’s probably just 2 minutes total too. Easy $1,000
Or unless if you're gettin a bonus. That's the only way I would take off running into the market without my cart. After I get my bonus then I gotta go back and get my cart. That's gotta be the worst sweep that I've ever seen.

At least this episode had a mannequin Jolly Green Giant bonus; who got more out of it than Barb and Jeff. Actually, Barb would have had better results if she forced that Jolly Green Giant MANNEQUIN to do the shopping!

The announcer would ask if I even know what's in my cart and by the same token, he would be having a hard time narrating the merchandise I've collected; only thing that could stop me is if there's a sandwich bonus make a sandwich for $200? Count me in. Oh, one more thing; if one of those cumbersome cameramen get in my way, he's getting thrown in the cart too! But that's just me!
Kristi really concentrates when it's her turn. She sticks her neck way out in front and looks mean, like she is going to come through the screen. The shopping list was hard to begin with - I would have just skipped that one.

You received a $25 penalty for each "violation", such as leaving a product on the ground, destroying a product, or running into another player or staff member (that might be more; I never saw the official rules to know all the penalties, just what was announced on the show). This was applied to the grand total at the same time as the groceries. I remember one episode in the 90's where a penalty (guy knocked some products over while trying to take back a bonus) actually cost the game.
