  • In this tutorial I show how to create a 2D frame by frame animation of a crankshaft, that doesn't require any prior knowledge of animation. With this animation tutorial alone, you will learn enough to be able to create your own simple 2D frame by frame animations with Krita, which is a free drawing program. This tutorial is suitable and made for for complete beginners!
This video is a follow-up to a greater course in Engineering Dynamics. You can find the full playlist here www.engineer4f... . The course covers linear motion, projectile motion, circular motion, kinetics, work & energy, impulse & momentum, and rigid body rotation.
Link to download Krita is here: krita.org/en/

Good for engineering, as well as a good tutorial for Krita animation. I just started using Krita for drawing too, and didn't even explore the other dockers that open up things like animation. Very nice!

Thanks! And yeah I've used Krita a lot, but still know there are so many features I have yet to discover too =)

If you are new to digital painting, consider Huion tablets as affordable alternatives to Wacom. If you ever want more custom brushes for Krita, check out websites like DeviantArt, Brusheezy, Gumroad, etc. There, you can find free & affordable brushes. Also, you can actually upload Photoshop brushes into Krita. And Gimp brushes too.

This is amazing. I had no idea I could do this.

Yeah it's a simple example, but I just wanted to show that anyone can animate! Glad you liked it =)

You can do engineering drawing in art/graphic softwares.
The best *FREE* softwares for art and animation are Krita, MyPaint, Gimp, Inkscape, Opentoonz, etc. I most use Inkscape for technical drawing and vector graphics, and also for mathematical presentations. Krita recognises Inkscape's formats, path tools, effects and filters.
The best *FREE* CAD software is FreeCAD, an open-source alternative to AutoCAD. The most advanced free 3D software is Blender and that comes with a steep learning curve.

@@pinklady7184 I haven't tried FreeCAD yet but plan to eventually give it a go. But I generally have two different setups depending on my needs. 1) Macbook + Bamboo Wacom (CTL-470) + Krita and 2) iPad +Apple Pencil + Sketchbook. I used to use sketchbook on desktop too but it's been a pretty long time.

Engineer4Free I have few times tried learning FreeCAD, but I don't get enough time, as I always put Blender before FreeCAD. I am taking online courses in Blender and paying for them annually. Now there is 5 weeks' lockdown here in Ireland, I will have time to learn FreeCAD.
I am familiar with Sketchbook Pro. I have that on my mobile tablet. I also have Artrage and Procreate. I paint pictures as a hobby.

@@pinklady7184 I am sorry to hear you are on lockdown, I hope you learn more about Free-CAD and stay safe. I have heard about it but I use fusion 360 for my projects.

Phenomenal timing, I just downloaded krita for unrelated drawings. Maybe I can put this to work on a vibrations problem for fun soon

Nice!! Krita is great. And not a bad tool to have at your disposal 😏

For an affordable sketching tablet for PC, consider brand Huion. They do 1/4 the prices of Wacom.

@@pinklady7184 dang, I'm actually working on a wacom I bought several years ago (and neglected for too long) but I will file that info away for telling friends or in case my wacom breaks... I appreciate you telling me this! I haven't heard of that brand before

Kimberly W if your old Wacom tablet is ever dysfunctional, you have mostly to download its latest drivers from official websites. Give me few minutes to get you link to drivers.
I am back. First disconnect your tablet from PC, go to this link below, select latest driver for your tablet model, and download. Install driver. Shut down computer. Reconnect your tablet to PC and switch on power. Your tablet should be as right as rain.
      www.wacom.com/en-us/support/product-support/drivers#latest
Else, your Wacom pen is not working and needs replacement. You can get Wacom pen replacement at Amazon and nibs too.
I have 5 tablets - 4 graphic tablets: two old Wacom Intuos and two latest Huion graphic tablet and 1 Kamvas Huion. I bought Wacom Intuos at roughly $350. When I bought my first Huion for under $70, I was so pleased with it that I had to buy another Huion ($58) for a smaller computer in a different location. Huion has a better sketching surface than Wacom Intuos and it has a paperlike feel under nib, while Wacom has horrible smooth surface. For the prices, Huion tablets are impressive, same levels of pressure sensitivity as Wacom. My fifth tablet was Huion Kamvas, a cheap alternative to Wacom Cintiq. I use it everyday. No trouble in few years.
