I do ceramic sculptures myself and I must say, it takes a person to actually know the thing you are sculpting. I used to take clay slurry, mix it with paper pulp and tip the porridge like stuff onto a large plaster bat. The sheets that came out of that had to go a little less than leather hard and I formed very loose doggy-forms. I shaped the legs, body and head around scrambled up newspaper, which can stay in the form. The finished product sold like hotcakes on a winters night.... Try that. It will free you up in your forms. You have the understanding it takes to look at the things and form them with your hands. I like what you do. Greetings from New Zealand. Rita :-)
Thank you for your great instructions. I want to make a life size model of my little King Charles Spaniel- much like your sculpture, but a longer body and a shorter nose. Your dog will be a great guide. I am wondering if a fluffy tail would need wire too. I would also like to try a sitting dog later.
Glenice Crease Hi Glenice, have fun making yours. A wire in the tail is a good idea. Don't forget that the clay will shrink so push wire in about half an inch. 😊
I am learning..but i have seen many using wire and foil for inside the body and limbs...I see you dont use that in the body. did you fire this? I am using Air Dry clays. How is the had gonna stay in place securely? I am just looking for tips. I want to make a life size of my dogs. Thanks...
Hi, I have used air dry clay only once and didn’t get on with it. You can put paper/ tin foil inside and also use wire because you won’t be putting it in the kiln.
Thank you. It took me three weeks to make this dog because I had to wait for the legs and neck to stiffen so that they would carry the weight. Thanks again 😊

Hi,

You can support the head by propping something under the chin.
Good luck 🙂

Very beautiful 🤩
What type and gauge of wire are you using? What cone did you fire to? Thank you.
I didn’t use any wire in this sculpture. I used stoneware clay and fired it to 1220.
