Well, Radiant Historia might give you that itch considering some of the developers behind Radiata Stories also developed that game. It's a spiritual successor of sorts.
Radiata stories was my childhood game but when i got my ps2 sold i forgot about the game. But loved and watching i did not get very far i only got to after the disband and you survive in a city
Great review of a game I never got the chance to play due to the backlog at the time of other RPGs. I still would LOVE to play it now...something about those PS2-era JRPGs.
One of my three favorite RPGs. Radiata Stories has so, so much charm and personality. I can recall the days and nights in high school playing this game. I think the game has a real quality of comfort to it, at least before the "MAKE A CHOICE" stage, which bogs the game down for me, unfortunately. I really like the laidback, slice of life stuff it's got going for it. Being in and around Radiata just goofing off during the day (or night), doing stuff for Theater Vancoor (which I really wish there was more of) is incredibly relaxing and fun.
I finally found this game the first time I saw this game was in a tips and tricks magazine it was advertised as a rpg with the biggest cast of recruitable characters, it's been years, I remember asking my friends if they heard of this game with this many playable characters no one heard about this game.
Watching you run around and kick everything at 2:58 made me laugh so hard. He just so calmly boots the hell out of everything haha. "WHERE DA ITEMS AT?! BOOOOT!"
on the fence about this one for years, your review got me to pick it up. plus the gameplay you recorded looks more fun than the static screenshots i glanced at. thanks!
As a writer I love the slow world building. I played it when I was young and didnt have a chance to get very far into it but I always remembered what it looked like and the story. I am now playing it again and I find it enjoyable, and I don't mind having weaker characters on my friends list because I like to level them up along with Jack.
You hit the nail on the head regarding the slow pace. I felt like I played hours of this and still had not moved forward much in the storyline. I also hate not being able to play as other party members in RPGs. To me it takes away the draw to recruit new characters when you don't even get to play as them.
I never really paid attention to this game, but now it's on my to-play list. You can feel how much heart was put into it. I like your reviews a lot and I look forward to future reviews.
i missed this game a lot, i played it everyday, i choose non-human side and the battles with the dragon were awesome. the last time i played is the moment jack meets his father and this game is so entertaining and some sad stories
I love this game,it never got boring at all to me.Because the story is usually interesting,or atleast funny. Plus I love how you can get Lenneth on your team. My only complaints would be that you don't get more Cameo characters like that. Also it takes forever to boost your Hp artificially. Still,I'd definately love to see a sequal.
I will always love this game. One of the hidden gems in the PS2 era. The NPC's along having a pattern in the day and night cycle makes it feel so alive. HUMAN PATH was always the best because Jack was so assertive. Plus, recruiting the different guild members and guild leaders was fun!
@@33GLOCK sadly no it's a new story but the new protagonist, Stocke, is a fantasy times special ops agent which is cool. Fair warning radiant historia takes note more from "crono trigger" and is on the ds/3ds while radiata stories is more like a "tales of" game.
I love this game...played it 3 times only beat it once though. It is so slow, and I do wish you could customize your allies as well. Yet the music was amazing, and the story was interesting. I have only truly played through the non-human side though. I do like how the game rewards you with a new game plus so you get all your armor and stuff from your previous play through when starting a new game...which makes the first fight with Ridley much more fun. Dumpling...full volty...attack..repeat...oh she volty back and takes out 99 precent of my health when one my volty only takes away a fraction? (I actually brought her down but she struck me good before I could use any healing item). The game is just so slow paced it is tedious though. I do wish it had a sequel and for the longest time I thought it did yet I have not seen one.

I really enjoy when games give you that "dual perspective" story, but it is a shame to hear that this game botched it a bit. It is admittedly hard to pull off - giving a branching story where both sides are given equal attention and are not simply mirror-images of each other. The recruiting portion of this game sounds a lot like Suikoden. Some of the recruiting requirements for those characters can be beyond cryptic to figure out. Regardless, this game is definitely on my to-get list. Great video! :)
This is one of my first JRPGs and i'm glad. It left such a lasting impression to me back in 6th grade that i finally bought it again as an adult. Plus the ending of the game just left me wanting so much more. I believe the canon ending is the non human side with Riley and Jack returning home, but i don't or maybe refuse to believe that Ganz is really dead. Great reviews by the way keep them coming :D

i absolutely loved radiata stories! it's possibly my favorite game ever! definitely 100% in my top 2! and the game i played more then any other by far! i played radiata stories more than 1000 hours!
i Remember having two seperate save files because of the choice to choose Human/Fairy side then yrs after once internet guides were a huge thing i found out you could recruit like 128 Characters instead of just 8 but by that time it was way too late already sold my PS2 with most of my Collection of games.
This is a good review of a great game. I definitely agree with your comparison of the human and non-human stories. The human tale is well developed and immersing. I really enjoyed the living feel the city had, with all the disputes, conflicts, and activities that were playing out independently of the larger story.

I started playing Radiata Stories when it was first released in N.A. and has been my absolute favorite game since. I think it has the most amazing cut scenes, back ground, music composition and over all characters. You learn so much about all the people and see Jack's growth even if he stays sarcastic and full of sass. that just adds to his charm. This game absolutely makes you laugh at every turn but can quickly break your heart. I have been so emotionally involved with this game for as long as I can remember. I own three copies of this game. Jack is like #3 on my waifu list. And yes I love how he can kick almost everything. Especially the children. 10/10 game honestly. It's a game you can play over and over, you say the music wasn't memorable I must disagree, I cant tell you how many times I randomly hum the music from this game. For me it's a game I could play forever.

I love this review although I am a bit confused about you contadicting yourself at around 2:00. Were you meant to say the non-human side had more substance? As you said that completionists would want to join the the non-human side.
I was suggesting that one would only want to play through the non-human side to ensure they experienced both sides - the non-human lacks substance and isn't fun to play through. I'm just stating that if you want to play a better story with more to it and a more thorough exploration of the events in the game play the human side BUT a person wanting to complete the entire game will have to also play the non-human. Hope that clarified it.

you are wrong, if you play the game till finish, what you said this game doesn't have strong villain from the start is totally wrong if anything this game is one of the unique game where the main strong central villain is the very focus of the story from the very beginning. Who do you think the main villain is? the answer is obviously jack, this is a super rare game where you play as the villain that finally win and able to slaughter the main hero, silver dragon aphelion if you play the game you would know that the only motive aphelion ever have is to save humans, because he really care for them, and he doesn't want human to be genocide by the gold dragon, all his scheming are meant to achieve that only goal, save humans, if that not a hero i dont know what is, and who slay hero? obviously the main villain, and what is jack motive to slay the silver dragon that trying to save humanity ? just because he either want to save/bang some teen thot, or revenge for that teen thot. He killed the hero for a boy level puppy love, jack motive for fighting cannot be more pathetic, but that is why this game is sooo interesting, because this is a super rare case where you fully play as the villain, not anti hero, or dark hero or misunderstood hero, but simply plain villain

Loved this game as a child and really wish they had made a sequel. Hell, I’d settle for a remake or at least a port to the PS4/PS5.
