Nah these harms are super easy and you will get to a point where you can pull them off quickly. Learn Joe Satriani method too. Pinch harm in between the pickups. Easy sounds so cool.
17 years of his death, and not a single soul in this entire planet could come close this sound. Not even the technicality or complexity of his playing. The sound man. It's immortal. Unreachable. Unforgettable.
His squealies were great, however dimes pinched harmonics were absolutely incredible. The way he was able to sustained those harmonically rich pinched notes in perfect harmony and pitch really blow me away. I really hate that he was taken from us.
I felt physically ill the entire day when I heard the news. Suicidal imbecile. The world needs fewer people like that, and more people like Dime, who was kind, and always seemed to be positive and forthright.
I want to show you and take a picture from my no color air guitar but nothing shows on my camera only just empty picture i don't know why, i don't know what to say today technology sucks.
It's all manipulation of the middle 2nd harmonic. It's in between frets, but slightly towards the literal 3rd fret. High gain and clean technique and it's pretty easy. Using a whammy pedal is a cheap way out if you can't do them right.
Im sure whenever one of us aspiring guitarists performs a squealer in the style of Dime his spirit, wherever it may be, gives us a hell yea \m/ RIP brother, you are missed
Whenever I heard Dimebag's techniques I think of trucks in the yard of Midcities (here in Dallas-Fort Worth Texas) houses. And yeah, some Swedish dude made me think of a 1967 Chevy C10 Pickup needing a new engine on the street somewhere in Bedford, Texas. Nice video, learned something by the way.
Thank goodness for this old video! Really great explanations on how to do it. I personally do the first method as my hands are small and wrapping my thumb over is problematic as the first joint of my thumb tends to fret the low E rather than mute the strings.
I’ve started having the bar forward pushing down to lower the pitch, then hybrid picking the string with my middle finger to get the harmonic l, then pulling back up and it makes it really easy to eliminate string noise when changing between multiple strings during divebombs! makes it really easy and gets a nice loud harmonic too
Ola you are my hero as much as Dime was.. and dime was the reason I picked up guitar!!! But you helped me finally find my tone I've been searching so long for!!
Hey Ola! Greetings from Oregon! Great vid on the Dime squeals man. It's really helped. Reading how to do it from his book is good, but seeing it done is even better. Anyway, I don't know if you're taking questions on this video still, but if you are? I really dig your alternate picking/chugging technique. It sounds tough as hell dude. After 5 years, its still something I struggle with. I was wondering if you had some tips for stuff like, simply holding the pick, string attack, wrist control (my wrist always seems to want to tense up), things like that. I'd really like to be a great chugger. But, I struggle. Thanks dude, and keep on rockin!
In the bible Jesus looks way different then we are used too. Jesus hair was like a lambs and he is brown. So I don't know where they got the white skin and long hair
Nothing personal boys, just things he had done to push his equipment to the next level. Some of the these things are widely known already, He knew the inside of his equipment very well. I'm nothing special but I am very fortunate to have had a conversation with Dime one special night when my band opened for Fair to Midland.
Hi Ola. Kick ass video as usual. I saw and oldschool guitar world video lesson with dime bag showing how he does his squeal but for some reason I couldn’t truly understand it. I don’t know if that was because I was younger at the time but I just saw your video and now know exactly what to do thanks for the tip much appreciated.
Had to resubscribe again, that's the 4th time today! There's a great harmonic between the 2nd and 3rd fret, its either a quarter or 3 quarters through the fret!
actually you flick the string with your index finger then dive the tremelo then tap the harmonic with your 3rd finger as the strings regain tension and if you get it right you can cut out the noise of the flick with the index finger just leaving you with the tapped harmonic. i saw a dime bag vid where he was doing a soundcheck for a damageplan set and he gave a quick tutorial how to do this and thats how he did it :)
If you don't make the faces when you do this, it won't sound nearly as good. Trust me. The increased resonance in your sinus cavities will fill and feed back into the pickups. Otherwise, the sound just bounces off your forehead and is lost to the cruel indifference of the universe.
Thank you For the info....I was asking my wife about the signature dime sound yesterday and how to master it... ....have come close in other methods ...but this is much more beefy and consistent to me....thanks again for the video little lesson...pauly .....keep up the good work....
For begginers out there, let's say you're using whatever high gain distortion pedal, and can't get enough sustain out of it, a little trick that actually Dimebag used and many guitar players do is to have any kind of overdrive before the distortion on the signal chain, and if you're using your amp's distortion and it has a preamp jack or loop, you plug the overdrive there, that might help you get an insane amount of sustain for your squeals or vibratos.
It's a bit behind it, it's hard to find!!!! It's easier to get in the moment while playing than just out of nowhere.... STILL a tough but no matter what...
Strange because I always thought that the way he actually did it was to lower the volume knob, then play a harmonic and pull the bar while at the same time increasing the volume knob.I haven't been able to get good with that so far so this definitely makes things easier.
Awesome video! I really liked the one on the Boss Metal Zone pedal. I had one years ago and it never hit me to run it through the effects loops. I wish I had my half stack and pedal now but my ex-wife gave basically all of my equipment away while I was at work one day. I was lucky in that I had my Ibanez, my main guitar put up.
For what it's worth, I'm 80% sure that I read an article in the 90s where Dime himself explained it as the first technique. He obviously used the 2nd technique as well, so I don't know if he used both or was just explaining it in a simplified manner.
Thanks ola! I just bought a dean from hell, and I needed a lesson like this. This is my first Floyd guitar despite the fact that dime is my hero. Well him and ola😉
Ola, I’d like to see a video on how to do the thing where you rake your picking hand fingers across the fretboard and get that “spooky” sound, a la the intro to “A New Level”. Thanks!
Simple technique, really. One of the first things I learned years ago. If you really wanna make it scream like Dime did, then ya need to throw the Digitech Whammy on top of it.
Wow dude thanks I hade no idea that this way of doing squeals exist yet alone that dimebag used this method. But i find this whay much more convenientSo thanks a lot and keep up your good work
Could you do a video/livestream on how you would approach mixing one of your songs to get that killer sound you get please? I’m ok at mixing but some tips and tricks would be very handy! Have a great day and hello from England mr Englund.
I'm digging this lesson. As for your question, how do you do the following: 1. Play 8 string guitar parts on a 6 string hardtail without tuning down or any kind of pitch shifting. 2. How to make a guitar sound like a sousaphone with only a regular amp. I'm only kidding. Unless you'd have actually went for it. :P Okay, a real suggestion: The easiest way to pick fast. It can be a bit tricky for some people. Even those who have played for a long time. Or, pinch harmonics and how to add them to fast lines or just add them at all. It can be tricky to play a lead line and throw a pinch harmonic in there if you aren't used to adding them.
PREASE SUBSCLIBE TO MY CHANNUL GUYS!
Done!!!
how to nail down picking?!
oui
Dime would kick on his boost and do this on the 2ND fret.
Please make me
This helps a lot. I always just assumed that Dime could do it because he reached some kind of guitar god enlightenment.
He did !!!!
He invented the dime squeal, that's when he reached god level.
He did my friend, he was a guitar god... 🤘🎸🤘🎸
He is a God
Nah these harms are super easy and you will get to a point where you can pull them off quickly. Learn Joe Satriani method too. Pinch harm in between the pickups. Easy sounds so cool.

AUSHUAHSUAHSUWEIEJD
Dime does his 2nd harmonic squeals with his wah engaged. It trims out the frequencies that kill the sustain of higher notes.
.
Awesome tip man
Thanks!
Dime used a Crybaby Wah Wah Pedal
His squealies were great, however dimes pinched harmonics were absolutely incredible. The way he was able to sustained those harmonically rich pinched notes in perfect harmony and pitch really blow me away. I really hate that he was taken from us.
I felt physically ill the entire day when I heard the news. Suicidal imbecile. The world needs fewer people like that, and more people like Dime, who was kind, and always seemed to be positive and forthright.
he used wah for the sustain
@@papahet2879 eh..not always, mostly for the 2nd fret natural.
@@kyledadams he did, but he said he uses wah to sustain the notes mainly
Dime's squeels and 'hick bends' were so a part of his sound

Bro, what guitar is that?

"That one's gonna cost ya."

Fuck yeah! Dime reference!
*cough* wah pedal makes harmonics sustain more *cough*
@@shitpostcertifiedmoment8083 yea it looks like he’s using one the whole vid
a whole lotta cashhh
Every time you went to say “pull the whammy bar”
I expected you to say “Dump the bar”
Ah yes, dime’s video lingers in my memory
Getcha pull
"That one'll cost ya!!!!"
I wanna see you do the squeals at the end of "cemetery gates"
Along with the vocals
Digitech whammy pedal. simples ;P

Go for a Sustainer pickup, makes life really easier.
second fret g string

Use a pitch shifter along with this to further piss off neighbors and their dogs!
lol
Lmfao
That would be fucking awesome
@DiamondHead AmIEvil I'd be way cooler if I invented that but that's dimebag don't blame me😂
@Samí Warrior Dimebag used Whammy a lot, but you can keep being pretentious if you want to
UA-cam needs more people repping pointy guitars.
Killer tutorial, very easy to comprehend. Your guitar/amp tone is CRUSHING!!!! So good!
I love song lessons, or solo lessons. Can be your music, some of Dime's stuff, or others. Thanks for being a good teacher Ola :)
This just blew me away , best guitar advice I've ever heard. Well done man.
Dime was an unbelievable virtuoso
Sooo skilled and flowing player
A true natural

such a huge loss , way too soon man

“My short little tip” was the best part of the video. Very relatable…
You explained it and made it sound so simple and easy compared to other people 😂
Thank goodness for this old video! Really great explanations on how to do it. I personally do the first method as my hands are small and wrapping my thumb over is problematic as the first joint of my thumb tends to fret the low E rather than mute the strings.
I wish I had this video 10 years ago while I was struggling figuring out how to do it. I was able to catch it from a video of a live. Nice video Ola!
Finally glad to see someone with a decent amount of subscribers spreading how dime actually did the harmonic squeal :+)
wrong, it was the second fret
I’ve started having the bar forward pushing down to lower the pitch, then hybrid picking the string with my middle finger to get the harmonic l, then pulling back up and it makes it really easy to eliminate string noise when changing between multiple strings during divebombs! makes it really easy and gets a nice loud harmonic too
I still feel blessed to have met Dime and allow him to play my old Strat.

When I learnt it, I literally squealed for hours. Everybody hated me.

Normal Technique - 1:07
Dimebag Technique - 2:45
Strange because I always thought that the way he actually did it was to lower the volume knob, then play a harmonic and pull the bar while at the same time increasing the volume knob.I haven't been able to get good with that so far so this definitely makes things easier.
Or you can use an expression pedal and set the value on raising the pedal for killing the sound. Better than medelling with knobs
You squeal like my Scarlet Pimpernel! 😈
Learn something new everyday! Been doing that wrong for almost 15 years
Sic man...this is killer! I want a dime guitar also! Thx for the great lesson!

that intro riff was NUTS
I find it strange how it comes so easily on my Dean Razobacks yet on my other Floyd equipped guitars, it takes a little more finesse 🤔😀
Ashley Shearer well it looks much cooler on a razorback than say on a soloist, that may contribute
Checked the intonation? All done by the same guy? Natural harmonics change position based on how the guitar is set up.
NuclearHeadshot LOL, the intonation is fine on all my guitars.
Ashley Shearer well then, I guess you're just bad with the rest of your guitars...
It depends on the pick ups. If you have ever watched any Dimebag tutorials, he says it constantly "gain makes harmonics happen".
