Despite the Eco being heavier @ 3500 or so the FRS/86 clocks in around @ 2800. While I am a VERY avid Toyota fan (check the profile pic) it all depends on the drivers (lets face it, there are probably not many people with the guts, much less the skills to floor either car around some tight mountain curves with a nice drop off into a valley or a lower section below aside from professionals.) Yeah I could see the 86/BRZ/FRS coming out on top but I wouldn't count another car out just cause its known to go crowd surfing. Personally, I'd just buy an old 2jz-GE (non turbo) Mk4 and call it a day, cause even at around 18k for a non turbo, its still the better car but I'm just fan boying so I'll be over there.
Honestly, the guys who are complaining about the price to power ratio are simple car guy wannabes who don't realize when manufactures hide great cars from ricers by giving them low powered engines. Idc what anyone says about this car in my opinion it is beautiful and everything I want. I will be getting the 2018 version next year when I graduaste high school and I can't wait!!!!
Take a 2013 FR-S, put a shark fin, Valenti tail lights & Winjet headlights and you now basically have a 2017 86. They really didn't change much since its inception.
Honestly I don't know much about cars on a mechanical perspective but why is it that people complain about cars like these with low power when in the end people tune em up themselves and buy turbos and stuff yet people want it to come straight from a factory. Won't tuners just replace the turbos and different features anyways so why the hate?
I think the main reason is the price. For $30,000, its hard justifying having to spend another $7k just to make the car as quick as other brand new cars that go for $27,000. Buying a used FRS is the way to go. $15k for a low mileage one, you will be in the low $20s after a turbo and it will be very awesome!
I think it's deplorable how Toyota offers the 86 in the States without keyless go and without automatic climate control, which are all STANDARD options on the Euro models...
Goddamn it's beautiful in that color. I think the 86/BRZ is one of the best looking tuner sport compacts of the last decade, at least. People need to stop compainimg about it's stock power. The cars were basically purpose built for tuners. As a platform, it has more potential than most other cars in it's class.
I don't completely understand why everyone says it's underpowered, it supposed to be this way. Think about the Miata, we even less power. It's made to be a low-powered sport car for curvy roads, not straight lines.
The reason you don't supercharge is because of the parasitic loss that your average consumer would like to not have. Turbo technology has come a long way they spool up so quickly you wouldn't have to worry about turbo lag and you would reap the benefits of a turbo charged vehicle.
Nelson Santana Not when you are 6.5 feet tall. If a sports car has a sunroof I cant fit. A sunroof also adds weight to the top of the car. Not good for light weight sports cars.
One of my ex girlfriend used to drive a Scion TC......being a Subaru BRZ owner for the past 3 years I can tell you without a doubt in my mind that I would much rather own the BRZ. Hell, Id rather own the BRZ even if you couldnt roll the damn windows down.

It has the looks, the handling, etc... but it just lacks goddamn power. Like all else have said before, its only missing a supercharger/turbo or just give us a v6 and make it 306 hp (the lexus engine).
Not happening with Toyota and Subaru. They are conservative automakers that manufacture boring commuter cars not fun cars with 400 hp that's why they keep these underpowered engines.

What is the top speed? I want some suggestions cause it's my first time to buy a sports car! Secondly main reason i'm interested in this car is because it's best according seats, design, automatic, and better for drifting and curvy roads
The one thing that bugs me is that it uses a Subaru based engine instead of a Yamaha based one like the original 86. Other than that, I think it is cool how it relates to the corolla just like the sprinter 86 did to the corolla of that time.

Depends on what you define as better. The 86 is way way slower than either engine from the Genesis Coupe. I liked my 2.0T Gen a lot and am glad I picked it over the FRS when I did.
They need to put a bigger engie in this car, i hate how it looks this sexy and is this slow, 0-60 in 7? Really toyota, and it looks even better than last years FR-S i really wish they drop a v8 in it sometime soon, and toyota would probably have a supercar if a v8 were in it
Vincetagram V8 isn't really a Japanese style thing to do, they're taxed on how big the engines displacement is. I would love to see a 2JZ type engine in this, it would be a modern little supra
xXSquidzXx NSX much? lfa has v10, as well as other lexuses, but even a v6 or inline 6 would be nice wiht two turbos maybe, i feel like if it costs almost 30k i'd want more than 200 horsepower in it, beause if oyu put it in perspective, a single turbo 4-cyl used volkswagen tiguan has mroe horses than this thing for almost 10k less with same or more features(of course not as agile as it is still an suv) but i feel like toyota can do better
MaxiiBoii23 Lol that wont be right man , if they use the boxer 6 turbo more people would buy it and will enjoy the speed and sound ;) , just think about it :D
Because some people like to go slow and pretend they are the most epic undiscovered race driver ever. Or maybe higher horsepower cars like the Toyota CAMRY scares them.
These people on the comments are dumb as fuck. I own a 2013 Subaru BRZ and I own a 2016 Subaru WRX so really this question does not apply to me. I know this may be a weird concept you won't understand but here goes....THEY ARE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FUCKING CARS, thats why. The Subaru WRX is not a 2 door sports car, its a compact car with improved suspension, bigger tires, a nice hood scope and fire breathing turbo under the hood. In no universe should they ever be compared. Now, if you asked something like, why would you buy this over a Hyundai Genesis, I could understand the question much better. And to DevilTC....you are a complete dumb mother fucker. People do not buy a BRZ / FRS because of the HP numbers ( which for what it is, plenty ), they buy it because for the price its probably one of the best handling cars you can purchase.
Kale Dotzler lol what stereotype? Frs is a low budget race car that aesthetically looks good but no power no torque. I could see stereotype civic drivers but I respect civics it's just the dumbass ricers that give it a bad name but a wrx are you kidding me? Do evo owners have the same stereotype? I don't understand, on a straight your frs will be in my rear view buddy and please enlighten me about track capabilities besides the fact it's rwd
Katsu LA and a world of aftermarket mods. Oh you only have $1k to spend after buying the FRS, new headers and a tune, bam extra 40hp and tq. Oh you have a little more, supercharger which gives 70% increase in both figures.
And all the idiot kids who drive the WRX's and sti's and vape to be cool and wear flat brim hats that stick up an inch off their head. That bad stereotype.
i bought my frs in '13 for 25.5k. if it had been 28 i probably would have skipped it. that's just too close in price to much faster cars. i think toyota has lost touch with their audience. i've heard that due to signed agreements with subaru, neither company is allowed to significantly tweak horsepower. to increase the price at all without increasing horsepower doesn't make sense to me. don't get me wrong i love my car, i just think toyota is asking way too much. a brand new base model 360z has over 300 horsepower for just over 30k. toyota needs to re-think it's pricing. over charging is not a good way to pay for all the recalls and lawsuits.
Look at it this way. You can really only pick 2/3 of these options. Lightweight, High Power, and Affordable.. If you want a high powered + affordable car, you get the Z (drawback: it's very heavy). If you want a lightweight + affordable car, you get the 86 (drawback: it's very slow). If you want a high powered + lightweight car, you get a supercar of some sort (drawback: it's very expensive). Can't have it all really. haha
tranceandprogressive baby well the 2016 doesn't seem to exist(can't find it online), and the leftover 2015's are about 40k. speaking in terms of new cars off the lot, it's not even close to being in the same ballpark. i'm not saying the evo isn't a badass car(because it totally is), but i think the subject of the conversation is new cars comparative to the 86/brz in a similar price range.
Why don't they give it such low horsepower, is it so you can upgrade and like add turbos to it because most Japanese sports cars don't have much horsepower, like 200 to 300 range.
To each their own, but who buys this auto? Just got mine in white manuel, no fog light options for 86s in North America, pissed me off. In any case a great car for an everyday driver, Toyota is bulletproof on reliability.
I wouldn't say this car is slow. Don't fall into the trap of thinking a 0-60 time and horsepower is all that defines a car, especially a sports car. Sure you want be able to hang with a mustang GT on a straight away. As soon as the turns come though you will make that mustang look like it's standing still. This car offers you an incredible driving experience and is very fast when driven for what it's meant for.
Peoples concept of slow and fast when it comes to cars always cracks me up. Slow as in how? I own a 2013 BRZ and a 2016 Subaru WRX. The Subaru WRX will smoke the BRZ straight line...no doubt at all about that. The BRZ will smoke the dog shit out of the WRX on a hairpin turn road. Also, to this day...anyone who has tried to fuck with me on a curvy road I have absolutely demolished, no matter the car. Yes there is shit out there that can no doubt beat this car in the curves but for the price, does not get all to much better if you want a well balanced car that will chew up and spit out any insane road you throw at it.
Edgar Roldan The 86 has a 136 MPH top speed. A Lamborghini Huracan goes 200 MPH which isn't that slow for an 86. The 86 might be 64 MPH slower but it's still has a descent speed.
look everyone chill, no other car competes handling other than new miata, no ecoshit mustang or gay Front wheel like st, the point is its a champ and if u really want power just buy a used older model for like 10-16k and use the rest for a super or turbo charger kit
Charged you 2000, for the extra upgrades that might have cost you 3000 to put on,, not bad. But i would have chose different styling. The car is NOT slow if you can drive a stick, Don't believe the hype. Compared to a 45000 and up car yes but be realistic. If you put in the extra 15000 into it, your car would be faster and better than theirs.
Doing what exactly? I owned a 2004 S2K AP2 and now own a 2013 BRZ....and without a doubt in my mind the S2K could never hang with me on the twisting roads. Track...yeah, probably right.
people keep saying its overpriced. you have no idea what your'e paying for, you have no idea what this car is and does. if you're looking for a drag car that makes 600hp to go in a straight line, then buy something else. this car is not made to drag race, it's made to drift and more mountain runs. stop trolling. go pay 21k for a 4klbs mustang that cant even keep up with the 86 on mountains. this is a true drivers car.

even my 2015 prius c has the toyota emblem projection headlights, and 214 combined lbs of total torque for a combined 99 horse power motor.
prius has more power than most family cars cause of its electric motors which provide instant full torque, ironically prius is prob as fast as a brz
add a fucking turbo already
RareTommy I know man, it would be a lot quicker if it had one.
RareTommy Then get a Subaru WRX if you want a turbo.
WRXRED2018 Subaru Yeah or a STI, or a evo, or a golf, or mazdaspeed3, or a genesis coupe, or focus st... yeah you get the point
it's good with 200 HP not all that bad but if u want it fast you could always build it yourself you know the way real people do It
which color would you recommend? i can't choose between the orange and the silver.. ^^
Orange! You'll be able to find it in a parking lot? Haha
true xD
Can’t wait to pick mine up!!!
Im so confuse! About these 3 cars GT86,BRZ,FRS. Are they the same cars??!!
Yes all the same. The GT86 is not in the USA market. The current FRS has been replaced with the 86 for the US market. BRZ is everywhere.
The FR-S, BRZ, GT86, and 86 are all the same car with slightly different accents, trim, and badges.
$27K? Isn't the brz only $26K? And wasn't the outgoing FRS only like $22K?
saving up for this baby
is the Toyota 86 better than a Hyundai genesis coupe?
Depends on what you define as better. The 86 is way way slower than either engine from the Genesis Coupe. I liked my 2.0T Gen a lot and am glad I picked it over the FRS when I did.
Nice ! I subbed !
Thanks!
:-)
I love that color!
what is name of caller
??
gunmetal grey pearl
0-60 in 7-8!!! My bonestock 2012 GLI does it in like 5
bs
bike Does anybody know larger than this resuot . .
I want one but there's not many in Maryland
Love the look of the Fr-s/Brz/86/Whatever everyone decides we're gonna call it, just wish it wasn't so underpowered.
sorry, there is no perfect car. if you want power, get a hellcat.
Tanner Brunson The original rwd corolla was underpowered, and it became the greatest drifting car in the world.
Tanner Brunson Supercharger, that's all.
I would love to see a 2JZ type engine in this, it would be a modern little supra
xXSquidzXx NSX much? lfa has v10, as well as other lexuses, but even a v6 or inline 6 would be nice wiht two turbos maybe, i feel like if it costs almost 30k i'd want more than 200 horsepower in it, beause if oyu put it in perspective, a single turbo 4-cyl used volkswagen tiguan has mroe horses than this thing for almost 10k less with same or more features(of course not as agile as it is still an suv) but i feel like toyota can do better
is that a brz or a few?
they should put a boxer 6 in with a turbo . dont you think ?
hadley texeira no... superchager though :)
MaxiiBoii23 Lol that wont be right man , if they use the boxer 6 turbo more people would buy it and will enjoy the speed and sound ;) , just think about it :D
I'd rather see an EJ20T
The Venom Hoon that too
I'd rather they just put a turbo on the current engine.
lol i have a 2016 frs and this actually looks the exact same on the inside (except for the seats and alcantara on the door panels)
Why buy this over the wrx?
People do not buy a BRZ / FRS because of the HP numbers ( which for what it is, plenty ), they buy it because for the price its probably one of the best handling cars you can purchase.
is the windows lightly tinted
For 27k you gotta be fucking kidding me, rather take a wrx
For 27k I would buy it straight away.. Gotta hate Norway :(
Kale Dotzler lol what stereotype?
Katsu LA 27k for Toyota Quality.
I thought you didn’t have to shift with an automatic?
You don't have to, but you have the option to do that with the shifters on the steering wheel.
Can u put a corvette zr1 engine in it?
i bought my frs in '13 for 25.5k. if it had been 28 i probably would have skipped it. that's just too close in price to much faster cars. i think toyota has lost touch with their audience. i've heard that due to signed agreements with subaru, neither company is allowed to significantly tweak horsepower. to increase the price at all without increasing horsepower doesn't make sense to me. don't get me wrong i love my car, i just think toyota is asking way too much. a brand new base model 360z has over 300 horsepower for just over 30k. toyota needs to re-think it's pricing. over charging is not a good way to pay for all the recalls and lawsuits.
Can't have it all really. haha
its called a lancer evolution 5,6,9
tranceandprogressive baby well the 2016 doesn't seem to exist(can't find it online), and the leftover 2015's are about 40k. speaking in terms of new cars off the lot, it's not even close to being in the same ballpark. i'm not saying the evo isn't a badass car(because it totally is), but i think the subject of the conversation is new cars comparative to the 86/brz in a similar price range.
Why don't they give it such low horsepower, is it so you can upgrade and like add turbos to it because most Japanese sports cars don't have much horsepower, like 200 to 300 range.
G tubedude Ya, it's meant to be turbocharged or supercharged. It gets really really fast when you take it to the limits.
Kale Dotzler ok, thx
The days of muscle cars not handling is long gone. Camaro SS handles like an M4.
what is the top speed ?
It's about 136mph
The only thing it's lacking is power.
and a good exhaust note...it would be the Perfect car!!!
and no backup camera.
It's standard for all cars now a days even the 86...
godspeed yeah my bad there's a backup camera.. xD
It gets a good exhaust note with the TRD exhaust catback. I wouldn't own one of these without it.
What was the background music you used??
Didn't Toyota make this car underpowered so people can modify it? That's what I've heard.
white stitches guys, dont forget that!!
Wait 27 grand for that? That's a 18,000 car.
You're better off getting a used 2014 Genesis coupe 274hp Turbo for the same price (cheaper actually because 27k is brand new at the time)
To each their own, but who buys this auto? Just got mine in white manuel, no fog light options for 86s in North America, pissed me off. In any case a great car for an everyday driver, Toyota is bulletproof on reliability.
i really wish acura continued making the rsx
This has nothing to do with the video.
Mannn I want this car !!
why is he recording on a go pro
Why does it have a clutch if it's automatic?
Why even bother with back seats?????
Id buy an ae86 over this even though its slower
86 design with g35 mechanics and make it 15 grand.
Lotus Evora 400 REVIEW!!
ua-cam.com/video/J70evw1MWIg/v-deo.html
come on TRD , add a supercharger or a turbo model already... toyota is very capable of doing so.
until then ill be beating on my 2010 lexus is-f
The 2017 manual did 6.2 seconds 0-60
I got my 2017 GT86 for 21k pieces are dropping
Marco M you bought it used with how many miles on it?
Ive always liked them but there so slow 😕
I wouldn't say this car is slow. Don't fall into the trap of thinking a 0-60 time and horsepower is all that defines a car, especially a sports car. Sure you want be able to hang with a mustang GT on a straight away. As soon as the turns come though you will make that mustang look like it's standing still. This car offers you an incredible driving experience and is very fast when driven for what it's meant for.
I have always liked the gen coupe but it is so fat and sloppy handling.
If you put in the extra 15000 into it, your car would be faster and better than theirs.
cant even beat a 00 s2k
Doing what exactly? I owned a 2004 S2K AP2 and now own a 2013 BRZ....and without a doubt in my mind the S2K could never hang with me on the twisting roads. Track...yeah, probably right.
S2k can easily keep up with a brz and prob out run it, they are both light weight rwd cars but S2k has RPM's and about 40 more horsepower, thats alot.
whats the music tho bro
Its a really nice looking car but power ehh could be better. 250hp and I'm sold.
Great review but you got to ask these dealerships if you can test drive the cars
They wouldn't let me..we normally do.
