- Easily one of, if not the greatest Fugue ever composed - extremely complex, original, developed, varied - and very difficult to perform, especially in a way which brings out the dramatic of Zelenka's writing and counterpoint ingenuity, especially evident towards the end of this fugue, and conclusion of the Missa Dei Filii, ZWV 20 in his catalogue of works.

This particular fugue movement on this particular CD sparked my interest in Zelenka before there was very much available.
How any singer can have their throat intact after singing this Mass is beyond me. Zelenka pushes the limits. Pure exhilaration.
Definitely Zelenka's "greatest hit", and the culmination of his worth as one of the greatest composers (certainly of the Baroque era at least), and his time learning with the greatest of teachers: Johann Joseph Fux, combined with Dresden under King August the Strong's leadership of high Art and the exportation of music from Italy (Vivaldi's especially) lead to this masterpiece.
I would not be surprised if his friend J.S Bach had a potentially influence over him as well, they were both deeply religious and had the same ideals with regards to counterpoint being the musical language of the Gods.

Most fascinating music! Reminds me of Beethoven's great fugues from the majestic Missa Solemnis - it has similar dynamic heights, powerfulness, and of course complexity. I can hardly think of any more exhilirating music, especially those rising "Amen"-moments.
It's very interesting, since it's almost a hundred years older, and Zelenka is very unknown in the public consciousness.
