  • In #Battletech / #Mechwarrior there can be some designs which are largely disliked, but I always try to put them into frame. Yes, there are some mechs that I do genuinely think are awful like the #Assassin or the #Charger, but for the most part they have a role and place in the game, or a place in the lore, so I do my best to extol their virtues, rather than run them down.
I have the honour and opportunity to display the #Quickdraw today, a #HeavyMech from the #SuccessionWars, and I think you'll find that if someone says it's bad or ect, you may find that it has more teeth and more value than you might think.
    Let's talk about it.

I can't get over how the Quickdraw, a respectable heavy 'mech in its own right, shows more the baffling decision making of certain Inner Sphere militaries. I do not know why someone would think that a medium laser and SRM platform would be a replacement for the Rifleman, but I feel the Quickdraw would truly be in its element supporting the Rifleman. The weapon loadout and jumpjets lead me to think it would be good at covering the flank of the Rifleman, while the LRM would let it engage targets at the Rifleman's preferred ranges.

Certainly better companion for Rifleman than Archer (one TRO makes that claim about Federated Suns), though I'd rather pair Quickdraw with Trebuchet or Ostsol/Ostroc. Would go well with Griffin too, if your preference is firepower over protection.

I think it was originally going to come with very different weapons on the same arms. "What if we could keep the Rifleman's full 360 verical rotation while ALSO giving it Lower arm horizontal rotation at the elbow" but they couldn't mount the long range AA guns on the fancy new arms.

I don't hate this mech but it's always seemed lackluster to me. I figured out why last year: the entire loadout (armor, guns, jj) fits on a 50 ton chassis with no speed penalty. The QuickDraw is truly an overweight medium mech, rather than a heavy. The extra tonnage gives it slightly more physical attack damage, but per thelore (weak ankles) it's not supposed to be getting into physical attacks with mechs if it can avoid them.

IDK, at least in the HBS game, the QKD-5A is pretty good, especially once you pull out the SRM and a single jumpjet and slap in a couple small lasers and pump the rest into armor. If you do all that, you get a mech that does about 75% of the Hunchback 4P's alpha, but it moves faster, can jump, and actually has more armor. It's not quite a Grasshopper, but it'll do the job well enough until you can find one.

HBS Battletech softened me up to a number of mechs, Quickdraw being one of them. Pro`s: by far the easiest heavy to assemble early on, works really well in a lance the game directs you to, and does not carry a concentration of expensive equipment in any one point. Con`s: really wants a good pilot to excell at what it does.

I always shied away from it. The game AI has some sort of targeting protocol, where they'll favor focusing on certain units if all other things are equal. I've noticed that quickdraws and shadowhawks both get targeted. Quickdraws for me just don't have the armor in game to take any type of focused fire.

Never been a fan of mech designs that feature one or two rear-firing weapons. Those weapons could instead add to the mech's alpha potential. They take up weight at all times, even when you don't have someone at your back, which if you're doing your job as either a pilot or commander, shouldn't happen often anyway, especially since it typically has JJ's for easy repositioning. If you want a mech that can't be flanked, just get one with a 360 torso twist. The ability to spin around and alpha strike things behind you is FAR more terrifying than two medium lasers facing the wrong way most of the time.
And a one-shot SRM4. Ugh. I dunno who THAT idiot was but I'll bet he got sacked.

The Quickdraw is a mech I enjoy in spite of its flaws (except the one model with a one-shot SRM-4, which is a really stupid weapon and should be replaced with something else). I like fast heavy mechs generally, from playing them in Mechwarrior games, so stuff like the Quickdraw and Dragon are right up my alley.
That said, I think I prefer how Mechwarrior portrays the mech over how the tabletop game does it, for one reason alone: the rear-facing medium lasers are turned around to face forward, I don't like rear-facing weapons on mechs unless it's either something big and slow (like an Atlas) or a dedicated brawler. I'm a much bigger fan of having four forward-firing medium lasers. One custom Introtech variant I've run before has that done to it, but also removes the SRM-4 in favor of upgrading the LRM-10 to an LRM-15 and giving it two tons of missiles, turning it into a competent fire support mech that can also do a bit of brawling.

    • @ambientlight3876
      @ambientlight3876 2 роки тому +2

I also developed a custom variant that I think solved most of its problems at the sacrifice of maneuverability. First, I pulled out the missile launchers and replaced then with an LRM 15 with 2 tons of ammo. Second, I removed the jump jets, added 2 more forward medium lasers (for a total of 6) and 3 additional tons of armor for a total of 11. These changes gave the Quick Draw much more credibility in fire support and brawling. It also proved to be a decent bodyguard to mechs like the Rifleman.

I like the Quickdraw's design from MWO, but 60 tons is suboptimal for jump mechs, 55 tons is the sweet spot given the weight difference in jump jets from light-medium to heavy. However, if you remove the jump jets it can be a pretty damn good generalist design, freeing up tonnage for much needed armor, while having LRMs for long range and indirect fire, SRMs for crit seeking, and enough MLs to deal some serious damage in close without overheating, not to mention 6 point punches which can 2KO any other mech.
Also you joke about it drawing a 6 Shooter, but later designs do use Handheld Weapons, one of which is a RAC5, six shots a turn.

I've fought and piloted these in MW5: it's impressive. Virtually a Clan mech with it's combo of speed and firepower, it specializes at nothing but is good at anything. Fighting one of these is dangerous if you're in a lighter mech, and they can give bigger mechs trouble.

The Quickdraw is an ok generalist that never received a decent update. The 5M is oversunk, as is the 5K, and the 4 series do ok in the Succession Wars but suffer once Star League tech becomes widely available. Most of this can be blamed on intentionally bad engineering and the design of far better unis to fil its roles. This is a sad state of affairs, as a simple application of light engine, DHS and ferro-fibrous with a Streak 4, 4 ER Mediums facing front, and CASE with Artemis for the 10 Rack make it capable of being far more competitive for the 3060 plus battlefield. It's too bad the PTB never realised this and saddled us with a line of garbage refits for a mediocre design. Ah well. That's why we have the Flashman and the Grasshopper...

The quickdraw is pretty solid my first heavy in BattleTech the game after a while other Heavies and assault outshined it so I mostly use it for a fill-in now when others are under repair it gets the job done I use for medium lasers and to ppc's for a long-range damage dangerous that close medium and long totally solid but yes it's not super great in one particular category but when I fight them they're not as scary as some other Heavy's but will definitely regret not focus firing them down they can easily rip through armor and tear off limb and weapons which would be super horrible overall I would say Quick Draw is pretty good

Something I don't think the video touches on is that the Quickdraw lacks upper arm actuators, and can actually flip its arms over for rear attacks the same way a Rifleman is able. This lets it fire all four medium lasers to the rear after Naruto-running past an opponent, which is a lot to be hit by... although why not have all four ML in the arms where they can shoot front and back?
QD's 13 heat sinks do support a full length jump while firing two ML and the SRM... humble firepower but at least you can jump and shoot every turn.
I loved my Quickdraw starter mech in MW5, 6ML and SRM4... all forward facing because that game has no rear weapons. I stripped the JJs from it to give the machine a staggering amount of armor for its speed and firepower, and it served with distinction throughout the entire Kestrel Lancers campaign. My little joke is to rename any jetless variant of a mech "walk" like Quickwalk, Shadow Walk, Phoenix Walk....

Never had any real luck with Quickdraws, on either my side or the other side. They always tended to get shot to pieces after properly closing to their supposed strong short range. I don't think that's a fair evaluation, but it was discouraging and led them to just be part of the inevitable generic FWL/Capellan opposition. The other big jumping mechs, the Grasshopper, Victor, and Highlander, were all solid performers. But the Quickdraw seemed to be neither a 55-tonner Medium, or a true Heavy able to throw down with assurance.

A heavy mech that desperately tries to be a medium. I've never been a fan of this mech, mainly due to it's less-than-adequate heat control and it's baffling weapons package. A rear-firing SRM4?? WTF? If the design has to be surrounded in order to make use of all its weapons, it's a bad design. Speed and jumping abilities are pretty decent, but the heat generated by them prevent it from capitalizing on a vulnerable opponent. I've seen Quckdraws get shot to pieces more times than not, and usually by the very lighter targets it was sent to intercept in the first place.

to me, i feel the Quickdraw is the ideal heavy trooper for lower level medium goons/NPCs like taking the role of a simple but not too powerful heavy to add more weight for a medium lance or generalists. also what i dont like is how every variant is seemingly committed to have some kind of rear firing weapon, when having all the weapons pointing forward might make this have the punch it needs for a mech of its class

Sigh, the Quickdraw is another mech I dont like, tis why Im here. It doesnt have enough armor or firepower of a Heavy mech, lacks sufficient heat sinks, and has limited weapon range. Like the Banshee or Charger its an example of why some things are bad ideas.
Its hilarious that its a replacement for the equally flawed Rifleman. It functions the opposite of the Rifleman. They could be complimentary if used together, covering each others' weaknesses. It totally works with Lostech and Clantech, just look at the Mad Dog, or Nova.
In the Battletech 2018 PC game its one of the first heavy mechs you can get, and one of the worst. Its made much worse as due to the changes the game made from the tabletop the Quickdraw overheats much faster and cannot knock down enemies with Laser fire. Oh and because its in the Heavy class it gets turns later than a Medium. I just used Griffins instead. Theyre better in Initiative, have lower weight jump jets(meaning more for weapons, armor, and ammo), and their only downside is slightly less maximum armor(like 7% less).

  • @leeroy_jenkins9523

This mech, as it is designed, makes literally no sense. Why?
60 ton mech with 5/8 speed:
    Internal Structure 6.0 tons
    300 Reactor 19.0 tons
    Gyro 3.0 tons
    Cockpit 3.0 tons
remains: 29.0 tons for armor, weapon, equipment
comparison to 55 ton mech with 5/8 speed:
    Internal Structure 5.5 tons
    275 Reactor 15.5 tons
    Gyro 3.0 tons
    Cockpit 3.0 tons
remains: 28.0 tons for armor, weapon, equipment
Now comes the crux: Jump Jets.
A Quickdraw adding 5-hex Jump Jets spends (Heavy Mech) 5.0 tons for it.
Any 55 ton mech only spends 2.5 tons for this.
    So after JumpJets:
    - a quickdraw remains with 24.0 tons for fitting
    - but an e.g. Wolverine or Griffin has 25.5 tons left.
This is 1.5 tons MORE as medium design than as heavy design, with a mobility of 5/8/5
A Quickdraw build as 55 ton design instead 60 tons could have 1.5 tons more armor, or weapon/equipment, or mixture of it.
In economical terms: cheaper to produce, better to be sold.
If putting this 1.5 free tons into armor (for matching Wolvrine, Griffon, Shadowhawk)
It would surpase a Wolvrine in long range, and even might surpase it in medium range and short range firepower or at least be equal to it.
It would surpase a Griffin in medium and far in short range firepower (only lacking to a Griffin in long range).
It would surpase a Shadow Hawk in long range, medium range and short range firepower.
All at the same time by same mobility and armor protection ... as 55 ton design.
So what is good with the Quickdraw then?
Or do I oversee something? 🤔

  • @tenchraven
    @tenchraven 2 роки тому

The Quickdraw is not a replacement for the Rifleman in its intended role. The Jaegermech was the replacement for the Rifleman in it's intended role. That is the critical point- the RFL is a close air defense platform. But from Day 1 it has been used as everything BUT an ADA platform. Not a trooper, not a brawler, and use it as such it will be blown away. In those "off label" roles it replaces the Rifleman with a platform actually able to do those other jobs, and thus the Quickdraw supplements the Jaeger, and between the two of them they should relegate the Rifleman to it's intended role. In second line units and museums. And that is in 3025.

@@BigRed40TECH I base my analysis on the same source. The Rifleman should go into fire lances, not line lances. The Jeagermech is also created as a replacement for the Rifleman. In that role, it works. But both suck in line lances. And everyone uses the Rifleman as a trooper because it looks good. The Jeagermech is even worse in a line lance. Two replacements for a machine, one which makes sense. The other makes sense for the role the machine being replaced was used in but never should have. The QD and JM are not interchangeable, but between them replace the RM.
