At 0:21 he said to their number 11 Saleh "You want Ali ( their number 5 ) to go mark him (Messi) in the middle" Succeeding where many failed before him, he knows that if he plays man to man defense against Messi it'll eventually lead to confusion in the high defensive line that managed to lessen Argentina's scoring threats. He's true to his name, a sly fox indeed, great coach.

That was incredible coaching pitch! ✊
Let me explain the coaching steps and principles he used here:
💥 First, he broke the emotional pattern of the room: Saudi Arabia players came from the first half looking down, beaten and with their spirit broken. They sat down with heads down, slumped shoulders, looking defeated. Any good coach will know that this mental state and weak physiology is a totally loosing attitude! So.. he started by breaking the pattern, standing up vigorously in power position, and asking with authority his players: ‘What are we doing here?’ Hey! Is this our pressing?’ breaking the atmosphere in the room and shifting the energy.
💥 He then calls them out directly: the Saudi Arabia players were intimidated by Argentina and the star power of Messi. Here Renard would brutally call them out for lacking focus and for acting like Messi’s fans rather than Messi’s adversaries! With vivid imagery, he’d ridicule this attitude telling them: ‘Take your phone and take a picture with Messi if you want!’. Rather than explaining to them rationally that they shouldn’t be intimidated by their opponent, he paints to them emotionally and through a metaphor how belittling their attitude was, awakening their pride and warrior side.
💥 He then encouraged them: after calling them out, he encouraged them by pointing out their strengths. He said: ‘With the ball you were good, did you see what you did?’. Here he made them realize that they were not that bad, that they have strength and potential.
💥 He then awakened their faith, hope and belief in themselves, as he emotionally asked them: ‘Don’t you feel something? Don’t you feel we are able to comeback? Don’t you feel it?’ Here he plants the idea of being able to comeback in their minds and hearts, not just as a mental concept, but as a visceral emotion ‘Don’t you feel it!?‘ . This moment was a turning point, cause after scolding them for falling short and breaking their intimidated defeated pattern, he now speaks to their higher selves, their highest potential, the part of them that believes they can do it! He’s now effectively wiring in the empowering pattern they need.
💥 He then reminded them of what is at stake. With few passionate words, Renard brings back his players to reality, to the present moment, ‘Come on, this is the WORLD CUP!’, connecting them back to the significance of the moment.
💥Finally, he made his call to action: ‘ GIVE EVERYTHING’, he would plead to them. ‘Be FOCUSED’. And here he sends them back to the arena with HIGH SPIRIT. ‘Allez, come on, move yourself!’, while everyone applauding and everyone’s energy, emotions and mindset shifted!
    And it worked!
Saudi Arabia’s players went on to create the incredible COMEBACK that he planted in their minds!
Could they have done it without Renard’s coaching pitch? NO WAY! They were broke, beaten, intimidated, lacking faith. There was no way they could have ever won with the attitude they had!
    It’s all in the MIND!
    And in the STATE!
The beginning of any material victory is self-belief, combative spirit, and giving your all!
And that’s what a great coach does!
Imagine you have someone in your life like Renard that can break your limiting patterns when you’re facing a challenge, call you out when needed, encourage you and remind you of your potential, awaken your faith and self-belief, keep you aligned with your highest self, and keep you accountable for taking the right action..
    It’s literally.. GAME CHANGER!
Well done Herve Renard, and Mabrouk Saudi Arabia!

I love the way he started with the question:"what are we doing here"? That is the perfect way to make someone have personal reevaluation. Questions, the right one are very powerful especially the ones that speaks so much to the mind. Most of the questions he asked were pointed and straight. Notice how when he asks questions, he follows it up with bold statement. It's not only psychological but mental. Even a rat if psyched up can think he's a lion. Here is a good coach.

How good is Hervé Renard? He made Morocco qualify to WC 2018 for the first time since 1998. He is still popular here. He made our national team play real football, pragmatic, beautiful, intense... It's unfortunate that we have a lot of cry babies and corrupt officials in the National Federation who couldn't handle how real this guy was. He is a no bullshit guy. Really happy for the Saudis!

Even after the defeat against Poland, I could feel the spirit of Saudi players far exceeds the average "small team". Their determination is carved in their passing, pressing, and bravery to dribble pass through Poland defences.
Next match against Mexico, they should improve their efficiency in front of the box!
