The painter Eugène Brands is one of the founders of the CoBrA movement. Born in Amsterdam, Brands studied commercial art at the Amsterdam Academy of Arts. After graduating, he spent several months working as a designer for several advertising agencies before devoting himself to full-time art. Very early on, he created assemblages from found objects. He also begins to work on painting and language. During the Second World War, he was influenced by the concept of automatic writing of the surrealists, created images using charcoal, ink and gouache and inspired by the universe, he also developed a vast collection ritual objects and music from Africa.

Euge'ne Brands
Grande pittore olandese , le sue opere giovanili risentono dei grandi artisti del 900 , ma già dal 1940 si intravede ciò che caratterizzerà la sua arte.
Composizioni astratto figurate di segni e colori.
Dal 1950 le opere rimandano a ricordi di artisti come , klee , Mirò , Chagall , sopratutto i segni e disegni dei bambini. Campiture colorate , una pittura essenziale a volte naif.
Chagall torna spesso nelle sue opere fino al 1960 . Le opere di questo periodo sono molto significative della pittura di Brands che si svilupperà fino alla morte.
Il colore ha il sopravvento , la sua pittura diventa personale e autonoma. I colori diventano campiture , disegno , forme , poesia. Composizioni liriche alternano quadri dominati dalla forza del colore e della materia.

Yes, you can see hints of Chagall in some of Brands’ earlier work. I like his loose brush strokes, very free with color and light. Hadn’t heard about this artist before viewing. Beautiful violin music too.
