Brenda Deborah Shuma is a leading figure in pediatric occupational therapy in Tanzania. With over 2 decades of experience, she has devoted her career to enhancing the lives of children with autism and other developmental disorders. As a Senior Pediatric Occupational Therapist, Brenda’s work has been pivotal in providing services for children with special needs. Her dedication to these children extends beyond therapy sessions, as she is the co-founder of the Gabriella Children’s Rehabilitation Centre and a pioneer in service provision for children with autism and other developmental disorders in Tanzania. Understanding the need for a holistic approach to therapy, Brenda developed an intensive therapy week care model for children with disabilities and their families. This innovative model emphasizes the importance of family involvement in therapy and has been instrumental in improving outcomes for children with disabilities. Brenda is also a respected educator. She serves as a clinical supervisor for both local and international students, imparting her wealth of knowledge and experience to the next generation of occupational therapists. Her contributions to the field have been recognized on an international level. She is a recipient of the prestigious Child 10 Award, which honors individuals making significant contributions to child protection.
