Well, if we're comparing the initial ad theming, then we'd be comparing the naked Saturn head lady and her creepy floating head companion to conehead people from the actual planet Saturn. That was the first set of commercials for the system in Japan. Segata Sanshiro, great as he was, didn't pop up until much later.
Do you know who did the voice mocking the other consoles? A friend of mine had a crush on him as a kid..... she named him Saturn and thought he was the Roman god. O_o

We were a middle class family whose greatest feat was affording the Sega Tower of Power (with help from a neighbor who used her job and college to make money for both her family and ours.) I also didn't know when the Sonic game (Sonic Xtreme) was gonna come out..... when I heard they canned it I was riproarin pissed. Finally for Xmas of 98 I got a PlayStation..... Plaything haha. Neighbor had the Saturn tho. It wasn't all spectacular.... I knew I had to give up on Sega. Anyway these ads are kinda better than Segata not just because of the nostalgia.... they are mysterious and futuristic. And pretty edgy funny.
@@dekulevi936 In Japan, Saturn sales exceeded than that of PlayStation's, so I think US Saturn would been more popular if they aired JP Commercials, but then again Japanese Culture was different than US, and Japanese Media wasn't popular at the time in USA.
@@dudearnav There was a lot of beef going on with SEGA's main HQ and its American division during the mid 90s, which led to them leaving the console market after roughly 18 years (1983 - 2001). Not only because of their fears of the PS2 outselling the Dreamcast, but they were also afraid of SEGA of America screwing things up again.

I never saw these commercials and possibly never saw a sega saturn in real life but i always loved the logo and thought the name was cool. Watching the console wars documentary i think sega tried to do too much slander and re-repurposing the genesis instead of creating a clear, impactful release date for the saturn. Mario 64 was just the coolest thing i'd ever seen so it was a wrap after that, but the unknown vibe of the saturn was cool to me.
I had the same thought. I remember Genesis commercials well, I remember Dreamcast commercials well. But I have no memory of ever seeing these. I would have to guess that they would have aired on networks like FOX or MTV

N64: 296 games Better 3D games and had one of the best multiplayer party games of all time with the original Super Smash Bros. With Mario Part 2 as a good runner up. Game library was very limited. Not much 3rd party support SATURN: 1094 games It was a very successful console in Japan. Many of the better games were Japanese exclusives. For the Shoot em Up genre this was the best system. N64 had Star Soldier Vanishing Earth that was average at best. No other system provided the authentic arcade feel for shoot em ups and fighting games.

Going to sell on to be one of the highest selling consoles of all time, while the Saturn barely sold any at all and somehow ends up a Toys R Us exclusive.. And going on to make future consoles like PS2, PS3, PS4, and PS5. Meanwhile, Sega conceives Sonic 06... I think Sony will be fine...
First they launched it way too early at $399 which was pretty expensive and just so they can beat Sony to the market most of the launch titles weren’t finished second the console was hard to program due to its complex architecture third poor marketing these commercials can’t compare to the Japanese ones which were basically play sega Saturn and show the games you can play on it (also they had a very memorable character segata sanshiro) while the North American ones were PlayStation and N64 suck play Saturn where better than them fourth Bernie Stolar just Bernie Stolar in general and the main one Sega losing customer trust after the Sega cd and 32x fiascos

Sonic 3D blast was not 3D and it was already available on the Genesis too, so people thought it was dumb to buy a new console to play the same game. It looked better on Saturn and had a few extras, but they didn't make that clear. Not like it would have helped much anyway. Also, they went for an arcade grade games gimmick instead of a 3D gimmick however, they failed to make that clear to the public. They mentioned it here and there, but didn't fly that banner.

I bet those Genesis commercials pissed off SNES owners so much it beat the Genesis in terms of sales. If I was an SNES owner back in the day, I would’ve sent a complaint to the television station and punch whoever made that commercial in the face. But don’t get me wrong, I still enjoy both systems, even the Saturn, just ignore the awful NA commercials.
